2021 Ron Rathbone Local History Competition Category One – School Students Years K to 6 Guidelines

Aim

The aim of the Ron Rathbone Local History Competition is to encourage students to learn about the history of the area and to develop their own research and writing skills.

To foster this knowledge and interest, students are invited to submit a work Bayside’s local history.

Bayside covers all or part of the suburbs of Arncliffe, Banksia, , Bardwell Park, Bardwell Valley, Bexley, Bexley North, Botany, Brighton-Le-Sands, Carlton, , Dolls Point, Eastgardens, Eastlakes, Hillsdale, Kingsgrove, Kogarah, , Mascot, Monterey, Pagewood, Ramsgate, Rockdale, Rosebery, Sandringham, Sans Souci, Turrella and Wolli Creek.

Entry Requirements for Stage 1 Students (Years K to 2)

Students in Years K to 2 are invited to submit an entry that shows how a local place has changed over time.

Entries must include: o A brief paragraph about the place and its importance to the area that is approximately 100 words or one A4 page o An illustration such as a photograph or drawing

Suitable places include: a school; a familiar building; a church or place of worship; a park; a creek or a river; a swimming pool; or ; the airport; a shop; a train station schools, places of worship, parks, rivers, beaches, well-known buildings, transport sites (such as a train station), or family homes.

Entry Requirements for Stage 2 Students (Years 3 to 4)

Students in Years 3 to 4 are invited to submit a work that identifies a significant person, building, place or natural feature in the Bayside area. Students should explore what the chosen person or site reveals about the past and why the chosen person or site is important to Bayside’s local history.

Entries may be in written or video format. (eg: YouTube)

Written entries must: o Be approximately 500 words or one to two A4 pages o Include images or illustrations

Video entries must: o Be approximately between three and five minutes in length o Include footage and an audio explanation of the chosen site or person

Entry Requirements for Stage 3 Students (Years 5 to 6)

Students in Years 5 to 6 are invited to submit a work based on one of two options:

Option One – Exploring Bayside’s built and natural environment

Students are invited to research a place or area in Bayside and show how it has changed over time, identifying features that have been lost and features that have been retained. or Option Two – Exploring Bayside’s Diverse Culture and Community

Students are invited to identify the various cultural groups that live and work in Bayside and chose one. Their entry should explore the group’s background and outline its contribution to the Bayside community.

Entries may be in written or video format.(eg:YouTube)

Entries should include information from two different sources (sources may include: books; photographs; newspapers; maps; oral histories; websites; diaries or letters).

Written entries must: o Be approximately 1,000 words or two A4 pages o Include a photograph, a drawing or a map of the chosen site

Video entries must: o Be between five and eight minutes in length o Include a one minute ‘highlight reel’ or summary o Include footage of the chosen site (for option one), or an interview with a member of the chosen community (for option two) o Include an audio explanation of the chosen site or person

All entries must be received by 5pm, Friday 12 September 2021

Judging

Entries will be judged by a judging panel, selected by Council, according to the criteria outlined below.

Judging Criteria

1. Does the work relate to the Bayside Council area? 2. Does the work fit within the scope of the task? 3. What sources has the student used?

i. Students are encouraged to use a number of different sources when preparing their work. Many general local history books and photographs are available through Bayside Library Service: https://library.bayside.nsw.gov.au ii. Students are also encouraged to consider searching the National Library’s Trove website where numerous early newspaper articles, maps and photographs can be found: www.trove.nla.gov.au

4. Is the work entirely the student’s own work?

i. Students are encouraged to use different sources; however, the work should be in the student’s own words and not copied directly from a book or website. 5. Does the work acknowledge what sources have been used?

i. Students should include a reference to where they found their information. 6. The overall quality of the work.

Conditions of Entry

1. The Category One Award is open to any NSW student enrolled in Years K to 6. 2. Students must complete and sign an entry form and submit it together with their entry. Submission may be made in the following ways: Online: www.bayside.nsw.gov.au/ronrathbone (written and video entries)

Email: Soft copy entries in Word or PDF format to: [email protected] (written entries only) In Person: Hard copy entries or USB may be submitted at Eastgardens or Rockdale Libraries (written and video entries) 3. Students may work together to submit a joint entry 4. At the conclusion of the competition, entries will be placed in the Community History Collection of Bayside Library Service and, if appropriate, will be placed on Bayside Council’s online platforms. 5. If necessary, the judges have the discretion to divide the prize money equally between entrants whose works they consider of equal merit. 6. The entries will be judged on individual merit. The judges reserve the right to award no prize if they deem there are no entries of sufficiently high quality. 7. The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into. 8. It is the responsibility of the entrant to ensure that his or her entry is properly submitted and received. 9. Winner details may be published in media sources subject to the approval by entrant / parent / guardian / teacher.
