MCCC General Manager’s Report to The Institute’s Annual General Meeting 16 November 2018

MCCC formed as part of Tony Coote’s vision for The Mulloon Institute (TMI). MCCC is a for profit consulting business that takes the knowledge gained through the work of TMI and shares that with the broader community while returning all our profits to TMI. Advice is provided on:

• restoring natural landscape function; • landscape rehydration; and • rebuilding soil fertility.

Further guidance is provided on accessing information about regenerative land management practices that contribute to improved landscape function and on the sighting of agricultural enterprises to take advantage of improved landscape function.

The work of MCCC has been made possible by a small dedicated team of people who are already committed at The Mulloon Institute, thanks must go to Gary Nairn, Cam Wilson, Peter Hazell, Luke Peel and Kelly Thorburn and also to Michael Fitzgerald and to Raymon Kaawi who have all been instrumental in the early success of MCCC. The Mulloon Institute Board have also shown great support and interest in our progress.

MCCC began with a proposal prepared for a Black Simmental Stud, Wombramurra located in Nundle, north western NSW. This project is yet to be commissioned but it was a very valuable learning experience for our team. We subsequently went on to prepare a number of short site assessments for properties on the .

These assessments were followed by Cam Wilson’s delivery of three workshops for the North Queensland (NQ) Dry Tropics which addressed the treatment of gullies to reduce sediment reaching the Great Barrier Reef.

Subsequently we hosted a group of 16 land managers which included 3 landholders from NQ Dry Tropics who toured:

• David Marsh’s property Allendale (winner of the National Individual Landcare Award 2018); • Rhonda Daly’s YLAD Living Soils in Young; • Charlie Arnott’s property Hanaminno (winner Bob Hawke Landcare Award 2018); and • Martin Royds’ property Jillamatong.

The group also undertook workshops and presentations at the Home Farm and Duralla at Mulloon Creek. The trip exceeded the expectations of the NQ Dry Tropics group and was a great experience all round. MCCC was ably represented by Cam Wilson, Luke Peel and Peter Hazell and has developed positive relationships with David, Charlie and Rhonda.

MCCC are currently finalising a proposal for detailed designs and concept plans for 11 properties around Townsville for the NQ Dry Tropics with planning and construction to be complete by June

2019. We have also confirmed a workshop and series of site assessments with Cam Wilson in Rockhampton for the Fitzroy Basin Association in May 2019.

A major project for MCCC has been preparation of the Bannockburn Whole Farm Plan for The Scots College (TSC). Bannockburn is a rural property of around 250 hectares located on the banks of the Crookhaven River on the NSW South Coast and utilised or experiential education by the college. The farm plan will be a blueprint for improving landscape function now and into the future. TMI and MCCC were invited guests of TSC at the recent official opening of Bannockburn in October. The process has strengthened the ties between TMI, MCCC and TSC.

Peter Hazell on behalf of MCCC and TMI also delivered a presentation on the Mulloon Community Landscape Rehydration project, MCLRP (our catchment scale project at Mulloon Creek) to the Life of Mine (LoM) Conference in Brisbane in July. Our session: Strategies and planning for improving rehabilitation outcomes. This was a great opportunity to network with people who are at the leading edge of mine site rehabilitation and closure and to highlight the success and lessons learned from the MCLRP. We have continued to pursue contacts made at the LoM Conference.

MCCC are also preparing detailed designs and regulatory approvals for private clients in Carwoola near in NSW and Tharwa in the ACT, along with site assessments reports for landholders at Gungal in the Upper Hunter and Wollogorang south of Goulburn.

MCCC have been commissioned to prepare farm plans for the Home Farm and Duralla and we look forward to working with our colleagues at MCNF and TMI to prepare clear and concise documents to guide the farms into the future.

We currently have a short list of 14 landholders that we have sent initial enquiry forms to MCCC via email and as those come in, we can begin the consultation process.

In the new year, Cam Wilson will come on board full-time while completing his Masters Degree by research and Bill McAlister has joined the team as a graduate trainee this week. This will effectively triple our work force and we look forward to continued success at the property and catchment scale.
