While part can be attributed to Mary Louise Miller the sheer size of the boomer demographic, part is due to a dramatic increase in longevity – at the Pat Moody beginning of the 20th century, life expectancy was 49 years, and today it tops more than 80 years. Princess City Focus of Next Our Town

WNIT will broadcast OUR TOWN: MISHAWAKA as part of its Membership Campaign on Sunday, August 19 at 7:30pm and 9pm. As Executive Producer Angel Hernandez explained, “The Our Town series is all about these towns and the people within them who help tell the stories of what makes their special corner of the world unique. Mishawaka is rich in cultural and historical content. Everything from historical sites to traditional high school hang-outs, churches, the college and so many other special places that are known only to those who live in the area and know the true spirit of what Mishawaka is all about.”

As with OUR TOWN: GOSHEN and OUR TOWN: WARSAW – WINONA LAKE, the town’s residents became volunteer videographers. Armed with their own home camcorders, they created a video scrapbook of the stories that make Mishawaka special. WNIT’s professional staff utilized these video recordings, along with interviews held by the producers with the volunteer videographers, to edit the stories and produce an hour documentary that reflects the emotional ties of the people who live, love and are passionate about OUR TOWN: MISHAWAKA. During the Membership program, the phones will be answered by the volunteer videographers themselves. Lighting up Southwest Michigan Coming this summer, Harbor Lights TV will consist of eight, 30-minute episodes in magazine format created, produced and hosted by Benton Harbor native Dawn Yarbrough and aired in partnership with WNIT. Harbor Lights will feature positive stories about the interesting projects, people, places and events in communities throughout Southwestern Michigan. The series will: • Inform and educate our citizens about the myriad opportunities in their communities. • Showcase the great things that happen when community members work together. • Highlight the businesses, cultural, family activities, sports and natural beauty found in this area. • Promote local agriculture and cuisine. For more information, please visit HarborLightsTV.com and wnit.org for broadcast details.

This month WNIT shines the supporter spotlight on WNIT Board member Robin Douglass, who joined the Board in 2001. Since 2006 he has served on the Budget, Finance, and Audit committees, the Personnel committee, and, in 2007, became Vice Chairman of the Board. In 2009, he became a member of the Governance committee and was also named chairman of the Building/Construction Task Force. In 2011, he became chairman of the Capital Needs Task Force and joined the Talent Show Task Force (Michiana’s Rising Star) in 2012. As a “hands-on” Board member, Robin was instrumental in much of the construction details for the WNIT Center for Public Media. Throughout his tenure, Robin has also been a member of the WNIT Directors’ Circle. WNIT salutes Robin Douglass for his outstanding service and support of WNIT.

Robin Douglass Directors’ Circle

The WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their commitment, contribute to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget. These essential annual contributions make possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys.
