The Art Gallery of Cobourg began operation in 1961, as an extension of the Cobourg Public Library. The Gallery grew steadily over the next several years, increasing its programs and services, building a note· worthy collection, and becoming an autonomous institution. In 1973, a major grant from National Museums of Canada enabled the Gallery to participate in the restoration of Cobourg's famed Victoria Hall and to prepare new quarters there as a 'National Exhibition Centre'. The new Gallery opened in Januory, 1977 and this handbook has been prepared to coincide with the inaugural exhibition - the permanent collection.
