New Fire Engine

Captain Mace, Firefighters Peter Hereth and Jeremy Swearengin training on the new structural engine the fire department recently acquired.

All members of the fire department spent a week in March learning how to operate their newest addition to the firefighting arsenal. The new structural fire engine, which is a replacement for a 25 year old vehicle has many new safety features and should serve the needs of the Airport for another 20 years.

The crew in the picture is operating a remote controlled deck mounted turret capable of propelling 1,250 gallons of water/foam a minute up to 250 feet. Controlling the turret from the ground allows for safer operations than having to climb up the back of the engine during an emergency in inclement weather.

Other safety features are:  Audible warning to tell the driver when all seat belts aren't fastened  Slide out trays so firefighters can lift heavy equipment straight up  Enhanced scene lighting to help avoid tripping accidents  Reduced interior cab noise to enhance crew communications The fire engine also has "green" technology. If the type of call requires standby time idling, the fire engine turns off the diesel engine and operates from a more efficient electrical generator.

 The new fire engine will go into service in April!
