Wag-O-Shag Lodge #280

Potawatomi Area Council

Section C7

Introduction

1

Written by: Brad Singer started in the Potawatomi Area Council area in about 1926. At that time, local Boy troops were part of the old Indian Trails Council, based in Janesville, . In 1929 the Potawatomi Area Council was formed with headquarters based in Waukesha. Our first summer camp was held at Moose Lake and had a camp period of four weeks. It was at this camp that service became an important part of our Scouting program. During this time, scouts were given a patch that recognized for their extra effort and service toward the camp and its program. The honor camper society at the time was called the “Order of the Links.” At the end of each camp period, members were selected by their peers to enter into the society and had to go through an initiation ceremony. When membership was attained, members wore a single chain link on their scout uniform showing their membership to the society.

With the coming of the early 1930’s, and a lack of knowledge on the part of the council regarding Ku-Ni-Eh, Ku-Ni-Eh gradually took over as the honor camper society. Ku-Ni-Eh offered more secret rituals, local clans, dedication to the Scouting program, promotion of camping, and an embroidered patch worn on the right sleeve of the Scout uniform. Ku-Ni-Eh was a very widespread honor camper society that was created by the Cincinnati Area Council in Ohio. The Potawatomi Area Council, however, removed himself from the Ku-Ni-Eh prior to 1945. Because of this, the council decided to develop their own Lodge in the , even though Ku-Ni-Eh had far greater membership than the Order of the Arrow at the time. The National Council finally banned the Ku-Ni-Eh in 1948.

In late 1943 and early 1944 Charles W. Woodson, Potawatomi Area Council Executive, conferred frequently with William G Hoffman, then Executive and Adviser to Area P of the Order of the Arrow, about starting an Order of the Arrow lodge in our council. Application for a lodge charter was submitted and approved by the National Council on October 21, 1944, with the number 280 being designated for the Potawatomi Area Lodge. National Council expressed concern over the name because of the similarity between the spelling of the Potawatome Lodge #63 of Bloomington, Illinois and the Potawattomi Lodge #122 of Chicago Heights, Illinois. Dr. Vince Batha, a faculty member of Carroll College, suggested the name “Wag-O-Shag”, which was derived from the word “Waugooshance”. Waugooshance, in the tongue of the Potawatomi Indians

2

meant “little foxes”. At that time, early 1800’s, many foxes inhabited the area. They served as the totem of the local Indian tribe known as the Fox Indians. Waugooshance was also a favorite name with the native Indians for crooked rivers, whose winding resembled the eccentric trail of the cunning animals whose name they bore. Also fitting was that the new lodge would share it’s name with, the Fox River, a large river that runs through Waukesha,. Over time Waugooshance was shortened to Wag-O-Shag, to make it easier to pronounce.

The lodge participated with Mikano Lodge 231 until our Lodge became fully operational. The first lodge tapout took place at Indian Mound Reservation, which was their local camp located in our council’s territory in Oconomowoc, during summer camp periods in 1945. During that summer, twelve senior scouts and adults were tapped out by our ritual team. Their Ordeal was then completed while still in camp.

The Original charter members were: Charles W Woodson, Dr. James Christiansen, Dr. Vince Batha, Robert Jansky, Barton Rodgers, James Huber, Rudolph Timmel, Fritz Grover, Eugene Radke, and Ronald Johnson.

Charles W. Woodson became the lodge’s first Adviser. He then appointed Ronald Johnson as Lodge Chief, James Huber as Scribe and Fred Grover as Treasurer. This group was the first lodge officers for Wag-O-Shag.

The following year, the council purchased a chunk of farmland in Fond du Lac County. In 1946, this new property, named Camp Long Lake, held its first summer camp program and, from there on, we have held our callout ceremonies there. At that first callout, all current Ku-Ni-Eh members were officially made Wag-O-Shag members. At that time, all Order of the Arrow ceremonies were held at its secret campfire location off the camp property. This campfire location was eventually completed with a concrete altar.

Wag-O-Shag Lodge 280 was first represented at an area conference camp out in October 1947. This was the first event where the Lodge was honored for their service to the Council.

3

Wag-O-Shag published its first Lodge manual, with the assistance of the Owassippe Lodge of the Chicago Area Council, the Unami Lodge of the Philadelphia Council, and Ma-Ka-Tai-Me-She- Kia-Kiak Lodge of Blackhawk Area Council, in December of 1947.

In November 1948, obliging a national request to all lodges, a large chunk of Waukesha limestone with Wag-O-Shag blasted thereon was sent to the Vermont home of E. Urner Goodman. The stone was used along with those of the other lodge to build a fireplace in the home of Mr. Goodman, who had funded the Order of the Arrow in 1915 and was soon to retire. The stone is still on the fireplace which is still on display in the home.

Since rather humble beginnings, Wag-O-Shag Lodge 280 has gone on to become a trendsetter and a leader in all respects of the organization on both the national level and especially the sectional level due to the strong commitment of the adult membership to support the youth for whom the program is designed. Over the years the lodge has always been the leader at Area and Sectional Meetings, as well as the National Order of the Arrow Conferences. The Wag-O-Shag Lodge has done an all out effort to improve and promote Camp Long Lake as well. Some buildings at Camp Long Lake were built by the Order of the Arrow, such as, two adirondack shelters which were later screened in, the original dining shelter – a log cabin, which was originally intended to be half its present size, and serves as the Order of the Arrow office during summer camp and a storage building for Order of the Arrow equipment during the rest of the year. The Lodge has also helped to fund our Order of the Arrow/Nature Lodge cabin which is used for summer camp and as a rental facility in the off-season. The lodge has also worked to establish and maintain trails all over camp and even helped purchase the most current pier set that camp uses in the summer too.

The purpose of Wag-O-Shag Lodge shall be to recognize those campers, Scouts and Scouters, who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives, and by such recognition, cause other campers to conduct themselves in such a manner as to warrant recognition: to develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit; to promote Scout camping, which reaches its greatest effectiveness as a part of the units camping program; to help strengthen the District and Council camping program, both year around and at summer camp, as directed by the Council Camping Committee; and to crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service

4

to others. The Lodge shall promote and subscribe to the objectives and principles as set forth by the National Council, BSA, the National Order of the Arrow Committee, and the policies and by- laws thereof.

In 2014 the Wag-O-Shag Lodge shows its continued support to the Council by attaining an over 700 members Lodge that gives a strong financial support to the Council, helps Camp Long Lake with financial support, and did all this in our 70th year of continued charter with the Order of the Arrow. The Wag-O-Shag Lodge hopes to be around for as long as it is so able to keep providing the same mission for all their members and the Council.

All in all the Wag-O-Shag Lodge truly exemplifies what the Order of the Arrow is really about.

Through The Years:

Personal Testimony provided by John Rauenbuehler and Jon Kuderer. Introduction by Nick Schmudlach.

As time goes on, organizations and the things they do change. We asked a few key members in our Lodge’s past and present about the Lodge during a certain era and to give personal testimony about the Lodge at that time. Below are two responses that show how the Lodge has changed over time.

John Rauenbuehler is a Vigil Honor member in the Wag-O-Shag Lodge. He was active in the Lodge as a youth, serving as Lodge Treasurer in 1976. After he became an adult in the OA, he served Lodge Advisor from 1983-1989. He is still an Adult Advisor, currently serving in the

15

Activities Committee. He writes his personal testimony about the Wag-O-Shag Lodge during the 1980’s, which is featured below in italics.

‘Thank you for offering me the opportunity to share what life was like in Wag O Shag Lodge in the 1980's. During this time, our lodge was an active participant in many of the same activities that we are involved in today. We had a considerable presence at Camp Long Lake with many of our members both youth and adult serving on camp staff. We sent a delegation to each section conference along with the National Order of the Arrow Conferences. During this time, we rotated holding Section Conferences, with each lodge hosting at their summer camp location. I can remember that one such time we hosted, we prepared for dinner a meal utilizing the grill we have at camp. For dessert, the cooks made chocolate mousse from scratch. There were many people shouting "more moose"that evening after eating a huge evening meal that featured camps famous "finger rolls". The grill by the way was a product of one of our fellow arrowmen, John Schulze, who was a strong supporter of both our lodge and Camp Long Lake.

Also during this time at our conferences, we started our Ice Cream Pig Out at our spring and fall conferences. After we finished our Saturday dinner, and held our Ordeal ceremonies, we came back to the dining hall and were allowed to serve yourself all the vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream you could eat. All the toppings were available as well. Oh, and I forgot to mention you could drink all the A & W root beer you wanted. The root beer came in a 1/4 barrel that we got from the A & W root beer stand in Kewaskum. Believe it or not, we never polished off that 1/4 barrel until Sunday morning at breakfast. We even had more members in attendance at these events than we do now.

Relationships at that time were much like they are today. Youth and adults were able to do business as usual but without the use of computers like we use today. Cell phones and the radios in use at camp were not common either. One thing that our lodge did during this time was to personally contact all scoutmasters by phone and offer both unit elections and camp promotions. Many units held both at the same troop meeting. We also had to sort The Fox newsletter at some of the earlier OA Lodge Board Meetings before they got mailed out. We sorted them by zip code, and then sent them to the post office. They went out third class, and could sit a each post office for maybe three weeks before actually getting to its final destination.

One major project our lodge took on was to build the OA bowl at the north end of camp. This was another idea that came from John Schulze. We scouted the area and decided on the best way to create the bowl. Trees were cut down, land cleared, and steps were put in. Many of the trees cut down were put into use as the first bowl seating, or posts used to hold smudge pots, sashes or other uses. I believe the first official use of the bowl was actually at the Section Conference we hosted.

Wag O Shag lodge has always had a visible presence within our council, section and at national events. We have produced many lodge and section officers. I would expect for that trend to continue as we move forward. The experiences and friendships made within the Order of The Arrow last a lifetime. They have for me, and are some of the most treasured friendships I have formed.

Class of 1977’

Jon Kuderer is a Vigil Honor Member in the Wag-O-Shag Lodge. He served as the Lodge’s youth Ceremonies Chairman for many years before serving as Lodge Chief in 2012. Jon also held Section level leadership positions during his time as a youth. He writes his personal testimony about the Wag-O-Shag Lodge in the 2010’s, which is featured below. His responses as in italics.

- What was Wag-O-Shag Lodge like at the time?

When I first joined the lodge and later the LEC the same year, I was the youngest member on the LEC. My personal opinion was that the Lodge was in a bit of a lull. Everything was just kept afloat while no new ideas were being tried. It was also a time when the Lodge started to attend national and sectional events regularly and gained notoriety amongst other lodges.

What type of events/activities were unique to that period?

My first position was Activities Chairman in the Lodge and I wanted to give the LEC an event to build trust and help work as a team. I planned a COPE Course at Indian Mound. It was a blast and really helped expand the LEC’s thought process and ability to work with one another. The LLDC training was already around, but we wanted to make it more exciting and worthwhile. We turned it into a weekend event held at Camp Long Lake with games and socializing along with training to make for a great time.

- Share with us a few fun, appropriate story of your time in the Lodge during that period?

The first event I went to was a Section Conclave while I was still very new to the lodge. I think I was in it for less than 3 months in. The opening night had a game of guess that song. While we all looked at each other wondering who will be our representative I shyly said I know songs pretty well. I went on to name every song and shutting out all the other lodge teams. The advisor gave me the nickname JukeBox and that’s how I started in Wag-O-Shag

17

- What was the relationship between Officers and Advisers like during that period?

It was fantastic. We all knew each other originally from Scouting so it wasn’t anyone new for us. We had a wide range of ages, but still was able to work together and respect each other’s positions. The advisors were also quite young (or young at heart). They understood our perspective and never stopped us from changing and keeping the Lodge modern.

- Where there any important, long term service projects that the Wag-O-Shag Lodge did during that period? Explain

We started the annual Great Day of Service, where we would donate our time to a cause within our community. Another project, not relating to service as much, is the legacy sash program. I got the idea from another lodge and what happens is a brotherhood member signs the interior of their Ordeal sash and donates it to the Lodge to be given to a new Ordeal. This way, it can be seen all the brother before you, whom achieved great things while starting out just like them.

The Future Is Ours:

Written by: Max Czechowski

The Wag-O-Shag Lodge has been very successful throughout the year with all the different things we have been able to do. We are very excited and look forward past this Centennial Year of the Order of the Arrow and from our 70th anniversary as a Lodge to the future, a future that looks very bright. We are very excited to see how we can change the world in these next 100 years that we now get to share. Wag-O-Shag has looked at a few areas of the Lodge and have decided where we would like to have personal growth within the next 10-15 years. In one such area, Membership, our main goal will be to have 1000 total members and then focus on keeping them active in the Lodge. We also would like to look other areas, such as our program, service and Journey To Excellence (JTE), to see how we can become better. We are enthusiastically working to make these following years even greater for the future members in the lodge.

18

Membership has always been a strong point for our Lodge and we hope increase our numbers to have more than 1000 members by 2025. This is not too extreme of a number to meet because of where Wag-O-Shag Lodge’s membership numbers sit currently, at about 700 members. Yet, while having high membership numbers are great, having participation numbers at or near the same level is even better. To increase this number, we hope to reach out to all members through different methods of contact and improve our promotion tactics, so that everyone who joins the Lodge gets the chance to experience all the OA has to offer. Within membership, we would like to try and bring about the continued growth in Brotherhood Conversions. We have always been in a bit of a struggle in this areas but we now have new plans and ideas that will help us become more successful with the conversions. Membership is something that all lodges need to grow and Wag- O-Shag hopes to become even better with in the decade.

The programs that Wag-O-Shag offers are awesome. We have a great balance of different events, including, but not limited to, our: Spring and Fall Conferences, our October Promotional Events, LLDC Training, and our contingents to Section Conclaves. We have many members who attend these great events and they are truly what makes the event memorable. In the year of 2016, Wag-O-Shag has the opportunity to host the Section C7 Conclave. We are very eager to help Section C7 with planning and running the Section Conclave and we hope to make it better than it ever has been. There are a few programs that we would like to give new life, back in the 1970’s, Wag-O-Shag had an outstanding dance team that performed great routines during ceremonies. Yet, it has since gone away. In the next decade, we strive to restore the dance team to its previous glory and make it so that the ceremonies teams and dance team are competing at section and national level. On the LEC the Camping Promotions Committee has been on a decline, as the general pre planning and implementation of Camping Promotional Troop Visits has fallen behind. This coming year, we have new plans to improve the Camping Promotions Committee and widen its focus. We hope to extend the outreach committee to our Elangomats and also help other committees so they can all move forward with the lodge and through their work we can help grow our impact to others and help more troops.

On the 100th anniversary of the OA, we have decided to go with a slogan that fits that theme: “100 in 100”. This is a focused approach to complete the requirements for JTE. We made

19

plans to work 100 service hours per month, to do this, we have planned a spring Great Day Of Service (GDOS). We are now working on getting a GDOS together for the fall. We have also developed a project for Arrowmen to complete at our summer camp. We are working on our Camp Craft area, adding felt tarp and stones along the paths, in order to make a more durable surface for scouts and guests to walk down. This projects is also important as it improves the mobility of scouts with disabilities. We are very excited to see the completion of this project at the end of the summer, during our fall conference.

The final area that we would like to take some time to look at and improve upon would be our completion of JTE. This past year, we achieved Silver Level, which was a large improvement from the previous year. We overcame some great hurdles and we are proud to be on track for the successful completion of the requirements for Gold Level this year. We have worked very closely with our LEC and Chapters to see how everyone can help out with this lofty yet very attainable goal. Our goal for the next decade is to be recognized as a Gold Level Lodge every single year.

Wag-O-Shag lodge is a very successful lodge and we are very proud of our membership, program, service and JTE. Wag-O-Shag strives to give every Arrowman a great opportunity to experience all that the Order of the Arrow has to offer. We aim to be the best in all of these categories. The Gold JTE Level, which we are trying to reach, will propel us into a decade of great brotherhood, service and success. As the centennial year of the Order of the Arrow draws to a close, we must think: what can we improve upon, whom can we help, what can we help with and how can we change our community and the world for the better.

Wag-O-Shag Lodge #280 Lodge Officers

Introduction by Nick Schmudlach

20

While the goal of Wag-O-Shag Lodge has always been the same, the leadership structure of our Lodge has been a shifting institution. At its start, there were only three Lodge Officer positions and the Advisor. Below is a listing on all of our officers and advisors throughout our history. The current Lodge Officer arrangement has been in place since around 2004. The first of these positions is the Lodge Chief, who serves as the youth voice of the Lodge at local, sectional and national meetings and directly oversees all administrative committees. The next position is the Vice Lodge Chief, who takes the job of Lodge Chief if he is not present and directly oversees all program committees. Then comes the Secretary, who keeps track of the discussions held and decisions made at meetings. The last youth leader is the Treasurer, who keeps track on the finances of our Lodge. The adult that oversees and guides all youth leaders is the Lodge Adviser.
