Congratulations to and who have just been crowned the 2018 Australian National Champions!

Donna Urquhart won the Cincinnati Gaynor Cup. She beat England’s Victoria Lust 3- 0 in the final.

How exciting is it !!! Only 34 days to go before the 2018 Commonwealth Games gets underway on the Gold Coast.

Our team are in form and all is in readiness for Australia to do well particularly in the Doubles.

Cameron Pilley has just beaten former World Champion and Com Games Gold Medallist in the Windy City Open in four! In January beat current World Champion Mohamed Elshorbagy at the Tournament of Champions.

Donna Urquhart has won two PSA W25 events in the last 3 months and won the in November.

Congratulations also to all the winners of the Awards. CONGRATULATIONS

URQUHART SHINES

NSW’s Donna Urquhart has just won her 11th PSA title and her second PSA W25 title in 3 months. She beat the #2 seed England’s Victoria Lust (W#16) in the final 3-0.

In December our #1 player won the W25 Monte Carlo Classic and now she has won the W25 Cincinnati Gaynor Cup.

Now 31, Urquhart is having to deal with a number of high flying Egyptian youngsters. At the Monte Carlo she beat 19 year old Zeina Mickawy (W#37) in the final and at the Gaynor Cup she beat 17 year old Rowan Reda Araby (W#36) in the semi.

Urquhart would have been full of confidence having previously beaten Lust at the 2017 in 3.

NUNN WINS ANC

Christine Nunn is the 2018 Australian National Champion.

Nunn proved too good for Tamika Saxby winning the final in a blistering 23 minutes dropping just 12 points along the way.

It was an uncharacteristic performance from Saxby who is known for her fighting spirit but nothing can be taken away from Nunn’s clinical destruction of the #1 seed.

Nunn destroyed Jessica Turnbull (10 Points) in the semi final and Lynette Vai (11 points) in the quarter final.

Australia’s #1 junior Alex Haydon provided the first shock of the ANC beating #4 seed Taylor Flavell in four whilst 2017 ASP Australian Junior Open Champion Lynette Vai knocked out #5 seed Lauren Aspinall.

HEDRICK WINS ANC

Victoria’s Rex Hedrick won the 2018 Australian National Championship (PSA National Closed Satellite) in Melbourne. The #1 seed was too good for #2 seed Josh Larkin winning the final in straight in 23 minutes.

In fact Hedrick didn’t drop a game during the Championship. It was certainly a good performance given we are just over a month out from the Commonwealth Games. Hedrick will play in the Singles at the Games.

There was only one major shock in this event. NSW’s Australian Junior Open Champion Eugene Heng beat #4 seed Tom Calvert in four.

Seeded #13 Heng went on to reach the semi finals where he ASP lost to Josh Larkin in four. It was an awesome effort.

2018 AST KICKS OFF

The 2018 Australian Squash Tour has begun with the Australian National Championships in Melbourne. Rex Hedrick and Christine Nunn are the early leaders but there is a long way to go!

The AST aims to promote the domestic circuit of PSA events and reward participation and achievement.

Each year Squash Australia will provide a BONUS PRIZE POOL to be split up between the top 3 players based on the points they accumulate.

In 2017 Josh Larkin accumulated the most points followed by Rhys Dowling and Rex Hedrick. Tamika Saxby finished a clear winner in the women’s tour ahead of Jessica Turnbull and Christine Nunn.

Only a player’s Top 10 performances will count. In 2017, Rhys Dowling achieved more points but lost the tour to Larkin who recorded a higher total for his Top 10 performances.
