cal4wheel.com/in-gear 5 I hope everyone had a safe and great 4th of July this year with their friends and . Summer is upon us and wow what a year so far. With record level temperatures already, and the state calling for water restrictions with minimal to no snow up in the Sierras, it’s going to be a dry summer. All we can ask for is a reduction in forest fires and everyone to be safe out on the trails. One turn of events at this time is the reduction in COVID cases and the state opening back up, with some restrictions, mainly due to Cal-OSHA regulations pertaining to businesses and really large gatherings. No matter what, you should always take your health and safety into your own hands and protect yourself first and others second. There are still cases of infection going around and if you feel sick, stay home and self- quarantine. Even if you have been vaccinated, you can still test positive and should stay home until you are no longer contagious. Together, we can get past this and continue on with our lives. When I last wrote, Molina was just about to take place and Hi Desert Round-Up (HDR) was in JACK CHAPMAN the planning stages. While Molina was modified, it PRESIDENT was also a success. HDR, with some modifications, was put on and they both had a great turnout, even with a shorter planning timeframe. Both events received greater numbers of participants than expected, which was awesome. I want to PRESIDENT’S thank the committees who worked together to make both events a success and a huge shout out to all the people who participated. Sierra Trek will be here before you know it and REport the committee is working hard to get everything right, so those who attend will have the best experience ever. Putting an event together takes a lot of effort and coordination, with a team-like mentality. My wife Kitten and I will be volunteering our time to haul trailers up and back and assist on getting the food truck and other equipment to base camp. A lot of clubs and individuals are also volunteering their time to guide the runs, cook and serve, run the bar, raffle, merchandise and a ton of other positions it takes to make something like this happen. If you have never been to Trek, you should make it a bucket list item for sure. Not to mention there is another event held in the Sierras that should be on your list to make. That’s right, HSPR, aka High Sierra Poker Run, staged above Shaver Lake in Fresno County. There are some beautiful trails, with some spectacular views. This event is held on Labor Day weekend, and you just shouldn’t miss it. I have a feeling this is going to be a great year, with the ability to get out there and enjoy whatever it is you do. Cal4Wheel held their board meeting on June 5-6 and the decisions were made to partner with

cal4wheel.com/in-gear 7 his whole responsibility thing really gets into the Ttime for all the fun stuff. I have been running non-stop since Hi Desert Round-Up and our last board of directors meeting and it’s all but just a blur other than I just had another birthday this past week (always happy for those) and was able to take some time off from work and such to spend with family and friends which was nice change of pace other than when that ‘magic’ ended, the following day, I was out mowing the lawn in the 110° wonderful Southern California weather thinking that I don’t have to be so cheap and maybe I should hire a gardener? Anyways, as I went into the house as not to succumb to heat stroke and get a glass of water, I heard my phone go off, so I checked it and it was the infamous reminder email from Suzy and I then realized that this time was no better planning on my end than the last dozen or so times. For those of you that have never been on the board, every other month, I/we get an email from Suzy, usually stating that our articles are due that day or in a few days so she can do what she does to get the In Gear ready for publication and every month I am always telling myself that next time, I’m going to get it to her before I get that email; I guess there is JOSH EPSTEIN always next time? VICE PRESIDENTS’ reports

HI DESERT ROUND-UP Speaking of really cool things and better weather, Hi Desert Round-Up (HDR) 2021 was a huge success! First and foremost, after the devastating year we had last year, none of knew for certain if HDR 2021 would be a thing this year. Issue after issue plagued us from the start to whether we could host it at the Slash X or be in the desert, to if we could get a permit and if Covid would be an issue still and the list of issues/problems goes on. None of the committee knew for 100% if we would be able to get the chance to have an event. I can tell you firsthand that there is a LOT of

8 IN GEAR August/September 2021 oonlight Madness by Clovis Independents was a Mgreat success. I got there late on Saturday, but thanks to a great registration team consisting of Phil Moreno and Steve Egbert, I was quickly signed in and good to go. It was a full moon and a beautiful night. I had four of my grandkids with me. My Cherokee has spent too much time parked, and I had a gas supply issue at low speeds. Rather than spend the night stuck in my rig, I decided Visalia was not that far and I headed home early. I think I was the first to deregister. I was impressed that the raffle prizes were already pulled and ready to go. I am sorry I was not better prepared, but Clovis Independents certainly were. The trail crew was great, and the level of organization was impressive. Despite the short night my grandkids had a great time and really enjoyed the event. My hat is off to this great club for managing to put this together despite COVID-19 and the attendant rules. GOOD JOB CLOVIS INDEPENDENTS! We are still searching for natural resource consultants (NRCs). The successful resumption of our events makes it possible for us to hire new NRCs. We are looking for people with the passion to do this and we have the resources to bring them up to speed to be effective in this role. If anyone wants to know more, please reach out. Our best NRCs have MARK CAVE CENTRAL DISTRICT VICE PRESIDENT come from our membership as they share our perspective and passion for keeping trails open. I have proposed to our president that we join EcoLogic on an ongoing basis and that we develop fundraising strategies to further support the Oceano SVRA lawsuit. Our experience with them has been positive both in outcomes and in process. It offers the opportunity to work together with other related groups on this and other future projects. The Fresno Bee reported this weekend that they are close to releasing the cause of last summer’s Creek Fire. It probably will not be published to the end of summer. VICE PRESIDENTS’ Requests from the newspaper under the Freedom of Information Act have not generated answers. While we struggle to clean up last year’s fires, a new round of fires has already begun, the latest, the Blue Fire burning very near to the area devastated by the Creek Fire. reports Governor Newsom has touted his progress in fire suppression across the state, but the fire season so far has made those claims questionable. Forest management, maintenance access, lack of investment in firefighting technologies, and population growth in the Sierras all have contributed significantly to the fire danger and property loss. At some point the single strategy of addressing climate change to control the problem will have to be examined. Please be careful with fire this year. It is important to note that our trails in the high Sierra did not burn. Our members have contributed a great deal to the cleanup effort. I wish the politicians in Sacramento would step up too.

cal4wheel.com/in-gear 9 he last few months have been mostly about planning Tthe future events and direction of our association. Our board of directors’ retreat help set the stage for a very successful June board meeting. The meeting was extremely positive with a great outpouring of good ideas. With restrictions lifting, the financial planning and budget process were kept realistic and on solid footing. The report on the 2021 Win-a-Jeep showed the value of . Outside the box thinking and the outpouring of support for the Association set a milestone for this project. The 2022 Win-a-Jeep is now at MetalCloak for its new life. I am so excited with the Overlanding theme for this year. Win-a-Jeep chairman Chris Silveira has had his hands full organizing donation delivery and working closely with MetalCloak to coordinate the build schedule. I have gotten a couple of panic calls from Chris to do some Sacramento items that cropped up. Once this Jeep is ready to dazzle the public, we all must get behind it and rally it to a huge finish.

EVENTS The events that we put on throughout the year are vitally important to the Association. They serve as a connection JIM BRAMHAM between us and the land management agencies. The NORTH DISTRICT VICE PRESIDENT volunteerism that is on display by the committees is a testament to the dedication we all have to our sport. Hats off to the Central District for putting together a reconstituted Molina Run. It took careful coordination between the committee and State Parks to weave the way through the COVID restrictions. It showed folks a great time and made some needed money for the association! The board has accepted the highly successful new Death Valley Experience run as a new state event. This event is important in two ways. It is a to the overlanding community and our first event to be held entirely within a VICE PRESIDENTS’ National Park. Sierra Trek is back in a big way!! The registrations have been pouring in and a solid committee is in place. Jeff Dax has been steering this effort and success is upon us soon. I can’t wait to see old friends and make some new ones. Labor Day the Central District is gearing up for High Sierra reports Poker Run. Good news is the camp and most trails didn’t burn in last year’s huge fire. So come spend a fun weekend in some of the best wheeling our state has to offer! Bonnie Ferguson and her committee are working diligently on Panamint Valley Days. Get out your November calendars and make the trip... you will be rewarded with the beauty of the area and the fun of a great event. See you there!

ADOPT-A-TRAIL Here in NorCal we had a huge wind storm in January that blew down thousands of trees throughout our forests. Clubs have scrambled to remove these trail blockers and reopen routes. Thank you for the extra hard work this year. Without the unsung work of our clubs, the Forest Service
