News and reviews Opening win for Jason Le Noury Jason Le Noury opened up the Heritage Group 2014 Championships with a win on the rain sodden course at Saumarez Park. The heavy conditions slowed most men’s times down a little but Jason’s 25.20 winning time was 25 seconds too good for second man home Stuart Le Noury. Third across the line was Phil Lockwood in 29.20.

The women fared better, with Karen Farman, the recent winner of the Bob Wright Handicap Series, walking to victory and a new personal best time of 35.43. Jayne Le Noury was second with 37.15, with third place going to newcomer Rita Herridge in 39.04. Sarah Wright, with the company of Kay Coulson improved her personal best time by almost three minutes.

7 miles road walk for the Channel Island Ceramics Chilcott Cup Albecq to North Side, Guernsey

Carl takes the Chilcott Cup

Carl Thomson won the Channel Island Ceramics Chilcott Cup over a distance of seven miles, leaving the Le Noury brothers back in second and third place. Out on his own from the start at Albecq to the finish at North Side he recorded a time of 56.00. Stuart le Noury found himself two minutes behind, whilst brother Jason was well down on his normal time, taking in the race after a ten miles session to the start and an anticipated four miles after the race in preparation for walking the London marathon next month.

Defending champion Phil Lockwood, who for the last two years has beaten Rob Elliott by around a minute, did the same today, but this time only good enough for fourth place. Jayne Le Noury led the women home just outside her target of 80 minutes and almost catching Peter Beckerleg. Peter recorded 80 minutes dead to take four and a half minutes off his last years’ time.

Jerzy Hausleber from T. McDermot Very sad to hear of the passing, of probably THE most famous coach in the history of Race Walking. What he achieved in , from 1966 onwards with Jose Pedraza and then the burgeoning young group of Gonzales, Bautista, Aroche, Colin, Vera and Canto et al was simply extraordinary. They were frequent visitors to Europe every year and set standards so high in race walking they ended up changing the face of the sport. It wasn't evolution, but revolution, and by the end of the 1970's the rest of the world were flocking to Mexico to learn Hausleber's methods. Just count the number of Olympic medals won and World Bests set by the names mentioned above. The always immaculately turned-out Pole was, quite simply, a defining character of a type we are not likely to see again. 14 MAR 2014 IAAF NEWS MONACO 'FATHER OF MEXICAN WALKING' JERZY HAUSLEBER DIES AT 83 The IAAF is very saddened to learn of the death of the renowned walking coach Jerzy Hausleber, widely known as ‘the father of Mexican walking’, on Thursday (13).

Hausleber, 83, passed away as a result of heart problems in .

He arrived in Mexico from his native Poland in 1966 as a result of a coaching exchange programme between the two countries.

His death drew tributes from many senior public figures and also many of the athletes he coached.

“This is a great loss for the sport and also for the Mexican walking. He was the coach who achieved the most in any sport for our country. No one produced so many Olympic medalists, World champions, Pan American and Central American winners,” commented Ernesto Canto, who won the 20km race walk at the 1983 IAAF World Championships and 1984 .

“There was nobody who was his equal, he leaves a great legacy. Not only was he an extraordinary coach, but he was also a great person and extraordinary human being,” added Canto.

Carlos Mercenario, the 1992 Olympic Games 50km silver medallist and three-time winner at the IAAF World Race Walking Cup, also paid tribute to his mentor.

“Nobody led the way he did. Mexican sport in the international context has never had such good results. From Jose Pedraza in 1968 (the 1968 Olympic Games 20km race walk silver medallist and Mexico’s first Olympic medallist in athletics) right up until the most recent medals, they were all a product of his knowledge,” said Mercenario.

Hausleber coached Mexican walkers to nine Olympic medals - three gold, four silver and two bronze medals - and a total of 118 medals in major international competitions. The IAAF wishes to pass on its condolences to his family and many friends.

The RWA Younger Age Group Championships on 5th April will be a fascinating competition. Nihill Shield Report 7-9 March 2014 by M Fox Over the weekend of the 7-9 March a team of sixteen young athletes representing the RWA travelled to the Isle of Man to compete against a team of their Irish counterparts for the annual Nihill Shield match.

A team of nineteen had originally been selected but unfortunately three athletes were unable take up the invitation on this occasion. Manx Harriers were our hosts and organisers for the weekend. A special thanks must go to all involved for organising and running such an excellent event and weekend.

Nihill Shield cont’d The RWA were the current holders of the shield having won the event in Dublin in June 2013. With the Irish having brought a good strong team over to the Isle of Man, the event promised to be a hard fought contest with every point to be gained being extremely valuable and influencing the final match result.

Fortunately for everyone the weather stayed fine over the weekend but on the day of competition it was extremely windy making it very difficult for the youngsters to maintain performance and technique. They accomplished both with some excellent performances, some even gaining good PBs. With such a strong team having travelled from Ireland over to the Isle of Man and as predicted, it was clear from the beginning that it was going to be a close fought contest, it proved to be just that. Loud and Invaluable support and encouragement, from fellow team members on both sides, cheering on their teammates in such difficult conditions for the athletes, made for an excellent atmosphere with good healthy competition and rivalry between the two teams.

The final result saw the young athletes from the RWA retain the Nihill Shield by 38 points to 33. Both teams are to be commended for their sportsmanship and application during the competition and over the whole weekend. They were a credit to both England and Ireland and we can all be very proud of them.

On the Sunday morning the two teams and coaches gathered together down on the beach for some light training, stretching out of some tired legs and blowing away a few cobwebs, both sides benefitting from training in a larger group than perhaps normal for them. It was a good light- hearted finish to an excellent weekend and one that they thoroughly enjoyed and benefitted from.

The trip proved invaluable, allowing two groups of young athletes to come together for, some good strong competition, forge new and strengthen existing friendships both within the RWA and with their Irish counterparts helping to encourage, motivate and provide them with a platform to press forward and progress within the sport of race walking.

The team managers, Mike Fox, Jill Langford and Elizabeth Corran would like to thank all the athletes for their excellent efforts in representing the RWA and also our supporters, made up of parents and coaches for the support and encouragement they gave to everyone over the weekend, everything contributing to making it a very successful and enjoyable weekend. One of which we can all be extremely proud of a fine crop of promising youngsters in our sport.
