JOCHEN SCHMECKENBECHER/ Baritone

Jochen Schmeckenbecher was raised in Hockenheim, Germany, and studied with Kurt Moll at the Musikhochschule and Richard Cross in New York. After being a member of the ensemble at the Theater Hagen and at the Komische Oper Berlin he is now a regular guest on the leading international opera and concert stages, where he performs to great success the important roles of his repertoire.

Thus the season 2014/15 included Musiklehrer/Ariadne auf Naxos, Faninal/ , Pizarro/ Fidelio and Sprecher/ Die Zauberflöte at the Wiener Staatsoper, Peter/Hänsel und Gretel at the Garnier in Paris, Alberich/ at the Liceu in Barcelona and at the Oper Leipzig. Concerts led him to the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover as Zsupan/ Zigeunerbaron and to the London Philharmonic Orchestra with Janacek’s „Glagolitic Mass“.

His season 2015/16 features Alberich/ Ring des Nibelungen at the Staatsoper Berlin, the Oper Frankfurt and the Staatsoper Wien, where he will also be heard as Faninal, Frank/ Fledermaus and Musiklehrer. Furthermore he will appear in concert performances of / Kurwenal at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Gurrelieder/ Bauer at the Philharmonie Paris and Cerha’s „Baal-Gesänge“ at the Konzerthaus Wien.

In future seasons he will return to the the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Staatsoper Hamburg in addition to further projects at the Staatsoper Wien and the Oper Frankfurt

Significant projects of late were Kurwenal/ Tristan und Isolde at the Bastille in Paris, in Lyon and at the Wiener Staatsoper, Spielmann/ Königskinder in a concert performance with the Hamburger Symphoniker, Alberich / Ring des Nibelungen at the Staatsoper Wien, the Oper Frankfurt and in concert with the RSB at the Philharmonie Berlin. The two last-mentioned Ring-cycles have been released on DVD and CD.

Further invitations led him as Alberich/ Siegfried to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, as Amfortas/ to the Oper Frankfurt and the Teatro Regio in Turin, as Dr. Kolenaty/ Vec Makropulos to the Salzburger Festspiele and the Bastille in Paris, as Pizarro/ Fidelio to the Semperoper Dresden, as the 4 Villains/ Contes d’Hoffmann to the Volksoper Wien, as Faninal to the , as Marquis de la Force/ Dialogues des Carmelites to the Theater an der Wien and the Bayerische Staatsoper München and as Don Alfonso/Cosi fan tutte to the Oper Graz.

At the Staatsoper Berlin he sang in the new productions of Parsifal/ Klingsor and Fledermaus/ Frank as well as Beckmesser/ Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Faninal, Biterolf/ Tannhäuser and Papageno/Zauberflöte.

The role of Musiklehrer led him in addition to the Staatsoper Wien also to the Staatsoper Berlin, the Semperoper Dresden, the Scala di Milano, the Theater an der Wien and the in New York, the role of Wozzeck to the Liceu in Barcelona, the Teatro Real in Madrid and the Staatsoper Hamburg, where he also could be seen as Beckmesser und Klingsor.

An outstanding success he celebrated as Cervantes/Quijote in „Der Mann von La Mancha“ at the Bühne Baden, for which he was awarded the Österreichische Musiktheaterpreis 2015 for the best performance in a leading role.

In concert he performed for example Schubert’s Alfonso und Estrella/ Mauregato with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Jesus/ Johannespassion in Madrid and Düsseldorf, Lieder aus „Des Knaben Wunderhorn“ in Bregenz and Mahler’s „8. Sinfonie“ and Janacek’s „Glagolitic Mass“ in Dallas. With the Gulbenkian Orchester Lisbon and with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin he sang Orest in concert perofrmances of Elektra.
