Chairman’s Report

This season has probably been one of the longest on record; well not exactly the playing season, more the Club season. Right after the end of the 1994-95 football season had ended Members were soon asked to give a helping hand in breathing some fresh life into our new facilities, special skills were developed in painting, cleaning, pitch marking, grass cutting and tea making.

But within a short while the dilapidated stand, changing rooms and pitches had a new feel about them and many thanks go to all the members who gave up precious hours to help.

The playing season was always going to be difficult, with the excellent results of the previous year ringing in our ears, we had a lot to live up to and we also had the added problem of settling in to our new abode. Even with all this pressure we have seen three cup finals and for the first time ever we have been victorious in a final with the 4th team winning the Invitation Cup against Woodlands Social, congratulations to Steve Middleton and all his players.

The icing on the cake though was the 3rd team final played at Pirton against Chalton Strollers, this was a good day to be a Lea Sports member. Congratulations to Mick Marsh and the players but a big thank you to everyone who came along and supported our Club, but also to all the members who helped in preparing Pirton and pitches for the big day.

Our third finalists were our newest members, Lea Sports Netball team who narrowly lost in the League Cup Final against Vauxhall Golds, well done Diana Freeman and all the players (but could someone please explain the rules!)

My thanks go to Pirton Sports and Social Club for making us feel very welcome and for helping with the buffet at our 3rd team final. I have now resigned as Chairman, but an ample substitute has been found in the guise of Laurence Freed. I hope that everyone in the Club will support him in his new role.

I will leave you now to get on with what everyone comes to the End of Season Awards for and that is to read Steve Smith’s amazing yearbook.

14 Netball Report 95-96

Lea Sports Netball Section has been plagued by injuries this year and it has been a particularly bad season. We lost 10 games and won 5, with our best victory being over Herts Moat House.

We have found ourselves in the League Cup Final this year and are up against Vauxhall Golds who are top of the Premier Division. It will be a good game !!

But even though the season has been full of setbacks, we have played some superb netball with some outstanding play by Eileen Bodsworth, Catherine Cassidy and Debbie Allen.

We are ready to play again next year with hopefully some more wins !

Your Stars !!

SCORPIO (Oct.23 - Nov.21) You are shrewd in business and cannot be trusted. You will achieve the pinnacle of success because of your total lack of ethics. Most Scorpio people are murdered.

LEO (July 23 - Aug.22) You consider yourself a born leader. Others think you are pushy. Most Leo people are bullies. You are vain and dislike honest criticism. Your arrogance is disgusting. Leo people are thieves.

PISCES (Feb.19-Mar.20) You have a vivid imagination and often think you are being followed by the CIA. You lack confidence and you are generally a coward. Pisceans do terrible things to small animals.

It's All Fun And Games Until Someone Gets Their Eye Poked Out

The Story So Far For our opening game against likely championship rivals Javelins, Russ Sheppard made his farewell appearance for the season. He was off to record a new series of Steptoe & Son to be shown exclusively on Channel 4 this summer. In a game that we lost 1-0, Danny Tebbutt was brought in as his replacement. He was unlikely to score as many goals but was better defensively and with Brendan Barr in goal we could base our challenge on defence rather than attack.

By winning our next four games, 4-0, 2-0, 3-1 and 1-0 all was well and going according to plan. Winning six of the next nine games kept us in touch, but the Pete Sampras fracas with the umpire in the 3-0 defeat against Sporting Rangers for not packing it in (are the rumours true Danny ?) would prove to be crucial. After being summoned to Mr. Brittas' office at the Sports Centre and getting a damn good spanking for being bad lads we were inspired. Excellent ! Winning our next four games we were deservedly crowned champions for the second time in three seasons with a game to spare. We were just too good and Chicago's bound we were for one hell of a session. Champagne was flowing and Tebsy collected his second award of the evening in the form of second prize in a colouring competition. Our arrogance finally got the better of us in the end of season League Cup. After a bye against Nick Kane's Pest Controllers (they pooh'd their pants) and a win against a 2nd division outfit we were dumped on our bottoms by L.I.P.A.

Thanks To all the regular players (Brendan Barr, James Tebbutt, Kev Connolly, John Temple and Danny Tebbutt alias Pete Sampras). Good work fellas ! To Ashley Burgess for turning up at such short notice when we were very, very desperate. Sort it ! To B.J.F.C and Ernst & Young for not turning up at all and forfeiting the games 2-0. Thanks again ! To Chicago's for having enough cold Champagne on a cold Monday night to sink a Football Team.

Not Guilty For the record, the 'Old Farts' comment in my 5-a-Side report last season was not directed at Lea Sports but at another committee which we are no longer associated with. Thanks for the pop at the awards evening MT and please give Geoff Hurst his football back from under your jumper.

When I took on the job of Second Team Manager I thought it would be a case of carrying on Laurence’s excellent work from last season. How wrong can you be? The word I would use is ‘nightmare’. I never imagined it would be this hard.

We finished fourth from bottom, which was probably deserved. We played well week in week out without scoring goals - the goals you need to be successful. The highlight of the season was beating Lewsey Social, who finished up winning the League, after being told that we would be beaten by six or seven. A big thank you to Keith Justin for the ban.

Also I would like to say a big thank you to Laurence for not taking too many players from the seconds. To Mick Marsh - I phoned him countless times on a Saturday night looking for players (Archie and Paul Gathern, thank you). To Trevor England, my Captain, who gave 110% - thank you. Mark Yearwood - he was the reason I never used to turn up until 10.15 most weeks as he was off dancing around the country, but it was worth the wait watching him play. For getting us docked two points against Park Town after playing as an illegal player - Chris McMenamin. He was a ‘different class’ (the Secretary’s words, I believe). Finally to Steve Smith, without him the Club wouldn’t keep going.

37 !! You may ask what’s so special about this number that I open my report with it. Was it the number of games we played this season? No! Was it the number of goals Phil Clarke or Phil Thompson scored? No! Was it our goal difference at the end of the season? I wish!

No, 37 was the average age of the Third Team squad. An average age reduced below 40 by the presence of those two youngsters Graham Carter and Steve Goldmith. Funny thing is, people keep telling me that football’s a young man’s game. True, a lot of young men play football, but the truth of the matter is that there can be no substitute for experience, as we’ve proved this season.

The experience of the Third Team has been allied to passion and commitment and this has seen some weary legs take the 3 points after 90 minutes in many of our games this season. For this effort and great team spirit I would like to thank all the lads in the Third Team squad.

I would also like to thank our Captain Rick Vipers for keeping our feet on the floor and giving us a kick up the backside when we needed it.

We received runners-up medals in both the League and Cup this season and although this was down to the lads who played, we must also remember the terrific support given to us by Steve Smith, whose work load never ceases to amaze me. I would also like to thank the football committee, whose tremendous efforts on our Cup Final day did not go unnoticed.

Lastly, I would like to thank Steve Baggett who has quietly helped me throughout this season and gave up a lot of his holiday painting the stands and the goals before the match against Chalton Strollers. Good luck next year, Steve.

I have great hopes for all the teams in Lea Sports next year, especially the Fourth Team (under new management!).

37! I think we might have been older than the Vets!

Thanks.

Mick Marsh Third Team Manager

All good things come to an end they say, and Lea Sports Under 16’s is one of them.

We did not have a very good season this time round, did we boys? It was a very difficult season, what with losing Simon and Lee through injury. This was a great loss as they were loyal players, as were Rob, Marc, Phil, Ross, John, Andy, Gary and Lee Bevan.

I wish I could say the same for Greg Collins, who in the end just could not be bothered, and Paul Alfred, who also let us down on several occasions - his best reason for not coming was that he had to have his hair extensions put in !

Anyway, sweeping these two aside, I’d like to say thanks to the boys for staying as long as they did. Also to Darryl Bannan who was willing to play until the end of the season.

Alas, with only nine players, including Shane, it would not have been fair to carry on, probably getting beaten every week by full sides. I think that a few more lads might then have got fed up and opted out.

On the brighter side - if there can be one - we had a few good results: the double over Icknield and beating Barton; but the best of all was beating the eventual League Champions Ampthill (their only League defeat all season) - a great performance by all involved, including Shane.

I’d like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to Derek Carter who has been an ace at running the line for us. He deserves a long-service award. Another thank-you goes to Gary, who helped during games and getting nets down, etc. Also to the parents who supported us in all weathers, rain or shine.

Well, that’s about all from me, except that I wish all you boys the very best of luck in whatever you do and I hope you all continue playing football. But most of all stay fit and healthy and look after yourselves.

Dave O’Dell

Well this has been a most enjoyable season, even though the League position might indicate otherwise. As the team developed and took shape, our performances gradually improved, players came/players left until a settled squad of around 16 was established through the second half of the season.

It was a season of ups and downs; we lost the first 8 league matches, 17-0 in the first game to Limbury Boys. We also contrived to lose 24-0 to St.Josephs in the League Cup. But results improved as the squad settled and we picked up some valuable wins to avoid finishing in the bottom two.

Training sessions were a revelation with most players turning up every week. Valuable help from other parents was much appreciated, especially Steve McKenna and Gabby Kovacs.

Singling out good players is unfair to the team effort, but Wayne Turlunch/Gavin Kovacs were strong in defence, Brendan McNamee/Chris Smith played well in midfield and Gyasi Ellis/Richard Pawley scored their fair share of goals. Ross Scott played very well at full-back (out of position), especially against the many tall wingers he encountered. Mark Hutchinson was solid in goal after we lost James Drakeford midway through the season.

Manager’s player of the season goes to Ross Scott, who established himself well as one of the first names on the team sheet.

Thanks to all the players/parents, and of course Steve Smith, for their continued support.

John Pawley Under 13’s Manager 1995-96

Eight players have now scored over 100 goals for Lea Sports, with John Temple joined the group this season. Between them these players have scored 1,549 goals, which is about 28% of all Lea Sports’ goals. (See page 20)

Many thanks from Lea Sports F.C. to Laurence Freed and Wilkinson Freed (Veneers) Ltd. for their generous support this season.

If you’re sitting at home bored this Summer, why not give us a call? There is work to be done on the pitches, as well as improving the changing facilities in the ‘Shed’. Or maybe you could help new Social Secretary Neil Treanor with the arrangements for the Pig ‘n’ Jazz night in August. Or willing helpers are needed for the Pirton Village Fair on 6th July. It promises to be a busy Summer. Come and help!

And don’t forget . . .

If you think nobody cares whether you’re alive or dead - try missing a couple of mortgage repayments.

See you next season.
