The Harn Museum of Art’s creative curators, working with our innovative Acquisition educators and other talented staff, presented a series of diverse, Endowments audience-pleasing exhibitions during these twelve months. Annual attendance reached an all-time high of 109,540, reflecting the appeal The Kathleen M. Axline of the exhibitions and accompanying public programs. Also during this Acquisition Endowment time, 130 UF classes brought 2,400 students for object-based learning The Caroline Julier and and an additional 5,300 students taking the freshman humanities James G. Richardson course “What is the Good Life?” came to the museum for tours as well. Acquisition Fund

The Melvin and Lorna For summer 2012, Curator of African Art Susan Cooksey joined me Rubin Fund in organizing Deep Roots, Bold Visions: Self-Taught Artists of Alachua County, which lit up the Gladys Gracy Harn Exhibition Hall with the The David A. Cofrin dazzling color and texture of paintings and sculptures Acquisition Endowment by eight local artists. Our visitors explored works The Phil and Barbara by nationally recognized figures such as sculptor Emmer Art Acquisition Jesse Aaron and discovered works by other equally Endowment fascinating artists who live in our community. In the The Ruth P. Phillips fall, a Florida family shared treasures from their Endowment collection for the elegant and thoughtful exhibition The Modern Impulse: Photography from Europe and The Gladys Harn Harris Art Acquisition America between the Wars, organized by Curator of Endowment Contemporary Art Kerry Oliver-Smith. Moving imagery and jazz-age music conveyed through three films projected directly The S.F.I. Endowment for onto gallery walls animated this installation and complemented the Harn Museum the beautiful black and white photographs by masters of the The Fogler Family medium. Spring 2013 brought an exciting opportunity to show prints Endowment by Rembrandt van Rijn and his Northern Baroque contemporaries, complemented by paintings of the period on loan from several Florida The David A. Cofrin Fund for Asian Art museums together with rare books and maps from UF libraries’ special collections. Visitors relished the chance to examine intricate engravings Program and etchings up close with magnifying glasses in this installation Endowments coordinated for the Harn by Curator of Modern Art Dulce Román. This exhibition, organized by the Currier Museum in Manchester The Eloise R. Chandler New Hampshire, was sent on exchange for the Harn’s show Africa Program Endowment Interweave: Textile Diasporas, which we in turn shared with the Currier. The Michael A. Summer 2013 brought the opening of a show that attracted visitors of Singer Fund all ages and diverse backgrounds, Much Ado about Portraits. Cofrin Curator of Asian Art Jason Steuber led this effort by our six curators to The S.F.I. Endowment select works of art from all areas of the museum collections to explore The Sidney Knight aspects of portraiture. Audiences enjoyed the variety of mediums, Endowment techniques and styles as well as innovative features—a giant map of the UF campus identifying all kinds of portraits, a wall of decoratively The Criser Internship Fund framed mirrors for instant “self-portraits,” a photo booth for family fun, and a digital installation of photographs by high school students from The Harn Program around the state. Steven Bandoma interrogates postcolonial politics Graham Arader focusing on issues such as race, religion, fashion Gift and Grants: and consumerism. He has chosen the Kongo $100,000 and above nkisi as a monolithic symbol of African traditional culture. In Acculturation, a Kongo nkisi is pierced by The AEC Trust the cut-out arms of models from fashion magazines instead of blades or nails of a nkisi nkondi (power 1923 Fund figure). It waves a broken liquor bottle, rather than $50,000 - $99,999 the spear of a nkisi, and its abdominal cavity is filled with a television color bar in place of ankisi ’s John V. and medicines. Bandoma’s nkisi appears as a spirit who Patricia M. Carlson is made more aggressive by Western media, who Korea Foundation seeks acculturation through the subjugation of all people to Western consumerism. Alternately, this Susan W. Ware Connecting the ancient political capital of Kyoto with the imperial city of Edo, the Tokaido Road was part of the Japanese government’s official highway system designed to facilitate communication Tang Research between different parts of the country. The road was punctuated by towns, river crossings and scenic Foundation sites, as well as government outposts that collected tolls and monitored transit. Southern Teamster addresses themes of rural life, farming, and the Nora L. Hoover experiences of in rural communities. Palmer Hayden was Carolyn S. Horter an important figure in the Harlem Renaissance, a literary and intellectual movement that fostered a new African American cultural identity in the 1920s Professor E. L. Roy Hunt and 1930s. This closely cropped image of a Southern teamster relates to a larger painting by Hayden depicting a figure on horseback who leads a team Leslie R. Klein of horses hauling a wagon with crossties.
