“Laddering to Higher Learning – A Guide for Fanshawe College Graduates of the Schools of Business & Management and Information Technology To Transfer Credits from College to University”

The first section of this book contains maps of university destinations such as: the provinces of Alberta, Ontario and Prince Edward Island, the United States and Australia.

The next section deals with those universities that have specific Articulation Agreements with Fanshawe College. The information about these Agreements is contained within the pages written about the universities. Watch for the arrow which will draw your attention to the section about your program and the credit you can receive.

The third section deals with those other universities that may give a graduate of a two or three year diploma from an Ontario Community College, some credit toward a degree in their university.

As you browse through the pages of this booklet you will see that I have included a little bit of information about each university. Included also is the information about any agreements that Fanshawe College has with that university for Business and Information Technology students and graduates.

Also provided will be the internet web addresses containing information about the agreements Fanshawe has with each university. If you decide to take the links provided, you will find even more information about each university.

Please note that the information in this booklet was researched and gathered by mining the websites of various universities around the world. Information was downloaded from these websites and replicated into the booklet. Explanations about being a student at any of the universities mentioned in this booklet are the words of that university.

Information about Fanshawe’s formal articulation agreements is kept with the Registrar of Fanshawe College and was also used as part of the research for this booklet.

Permission to use information from many of the websites cited in this booklet is available upon request.

6 College or University - Diploma or Degree or Both? Now you have Options!

For some of you, Fanshawe College may be the only post secondary education that you engage in throughout your adult life but for most of you, Fanshawe will be just the beginning of a long and enriched life filled with learning and growing and developing. If Fanshawe has been your starting point, then doors will begin to open, encouraging you to look for new opportunities and options.

For some of you, a college diploma may be your second or third post secondary experience. Perhaps you have already been to university and obtained a degree but now you have decided to engage in a college diploma program to round out your theoretical background from your degree studies gaining solid marketable skills. Does this sound like you?

For others, the decision to come to college probably happened when you were in high school. You researched careers that were of interest and when you found one, you began working toward your goal by making sure you had enough of the right credits to help you meet your goals. When planning your career strategy and deciding on what career path you wanted to follow, you realized that the career you were most interested in would begin with a two or three year diploma from a community college.

For some, the path to university made sense because when you researched the type of work you wanted to do, you discovered that you would need a 3 or 4 year degree program to be qualified to enter your chosen field of work. When it came time to apply to university, perhaps you didn’t have strong academic grades to support the acceptance into an undergraduate program of study. You switched to “Plan B”, your contingency plan and you found yourself applying to college.

Now that you have arrived at College, you are realizing that your learning experience is both exciting and stimulating. You are doing very well, perhaps even better than you expected. You are interested in your program of study and you are putting forth an honest effort into your studies, test preparation and assignments.

7 Soon you will complete your college education and you may wish to investigate the possibility of higher learning. A few questions have probably crossed your mind such as:

a) Will I be given credit for the diploma that I am presently working towards in college? b) If so, then at what point in a degree program will I be permitted to enter? c) Are there opportunities here in Ontario or across Canada? d) What about opportunities internationally? e) How do I find out about requirements?

Exciting articulation opportunities are now available! Fanshawe College has been working diligently to research articulation and transfer agreement opportunities at universities both near and far. Every day Fanshawe is working to make strong connections with Deans and Chancellors in many well-respected universities, world-wide!

Over the past 10 years Fanshawe has developed and continues to re-evaluate all existing articulation agreements to ensure validity, accuracy and fairness. Fanshawe continues to actively pursue new block transfer agreements and other articulation opportunities with many Canadian universities as well as other universities worldwide. Your Fanshawe College education is meaningful and valuable in the university arena.

Transferring to a university into a bachelor's program from a diploma program that has a high affinity with the degree program will be easier than from low affinity or unrelated diploma programs. Depending where it is you are interested in going, that university will have its own approved policies and practices in assessing transfer credits based on an analysis of the learning outcomes achieved in your diploma program compared to the learning outcomes of the proposed degree program. In some cases, articulation arrangements may be in place for graduates of specific diploma programs; in others, the academic background of the student will need to be assessed on an individual basis. Further, there may be block transfers in place that if you have completed a two-year business diploma, for instance and you are trying to gain access to a degree program with an Information Technology slant, you may be required, for example, to take an additional Information Technology course to be eligible.

What are some of the factors that will help you decide on which university you would like to explore? Are you interested in staying close to your home? Perhaps there is a family business that you are involved with and need to have the flexibility to be able to go to school and still keep an eye on the company. Leaving the city would not be an option. Fanshawe has strong articulation agreements with Canada’s first online university, Athabasca University in Alberta.

8 You can now use the credit given to you for your 2 or 3 year diploma to complete your 3 or 4 year Bachelor degrees entirely online without ever having to leave your home. Graduate in your pyjamas!

Perhaps you are interested in studying and completing your degree in another province? Some of Fanshawe’s articulation agreements are with the University of Lethbridge Alberta, Cape Breton University, Royal Roads in Victoria B.C. and Athabasca, the Online University of Alberta! Our list of exciting Canadian university destinations grows longer with each passing day.

Perhaps you are young and adventurous and want to see the world. How does Australia sound? Fanshawe has current articulation agreements with such universities as Griffith in Queensland Australia, with campuses along the Gold Coast, as well as with the University of Western Sydney and Australian Catholic University. Your 2 and 3 year diplomas are most favourable and welcome there and by the way, Australians love Canadians!

The degree of difference that defines today’s career success starts at Ontario’s Colleges, more specifically, here at Fanshawe College. If you can combine the real- world practical strengths of your college diploma with strong theoretical foundations found in a 3 or 4 year bachelor’s degree, you could potentially increase your opportunities for a brighter future.

The Pathway to a CGA………

1) CGA Candidates should apply to the 3-year Business Administration Accounting Advanced Diploma Program which will give you 13 of the 18 CGA Credits. 2) Graduates from Fanshawe College’s 3 year program should now register with the CGA so that they can track the rest of the CGA journey. This will include getting the 5 remaining CGA credits by correspondence from the CGA Institute. 3) While doing the 5 remaining CGA Credits, candidates should gain employment in a financial type position and should work at this for approximately 3 years and not less than 2 years. 4) Apply to Laurentian or SAIT to take one final year for degree.

While completing the 5 Remaining CGA Course Credits:

Candidates must demonstrate that accumulated work experience has progressed to positions requiring a high degree of knowledge and responsibility. The candidate’s employment experience must be in an accounting related position.

In general, CGA Ontario requires 36 months of work experience, with a minimum of one year of experience in a senior-level (and profession-related) position. Quite often the required experience is deemed acceptable after a minimum of 24 months. For the employment experience to be considered acceptable, candidates are expected to be employed in a position that requires the application of knowledge and independent thinking in an accounting, auditing or financial

38 management function. This includes responsibility for preparation or interpretation of financial documents or other information required in senior-level employment positions.

Completing your Degree:

Once those requirements have been met, candidates need to complete the final requirement and that is to enroll in either: Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, SAIT, or Laurentian University to complete an undergraduate degree. Candidate’s programs will be non accounting.

Southern Alberta Institute of Technology:

For students entering the CGA program without a bachelor’s degree, CGA Ontario offers a choice of integrated degree opportunities. Our exclusive post-secondary partnerships provide students in the CGA program with an innovative means to complete a degree concurrent with their CGA program of professional studies.

Students in the CGA program can complete a bachelor of applied business administration in accounting and information technology degree through Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). The degree has been designed as part-time, distance learning, while providing students requiring a degree with efficient options to meeting the CGA program’s degree standard. CGA Ontario administers the admission and course delivery processes for this degree opportunity.

The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology’s (SAIT) bachelor of applied business administration in accounting and information technology program allows students in the CGA program to combine their professional accounting studies with the technology skills and training that are in current high demand.

50 51 Australian Catholic University

About Australian Catholic University

We take a holistic approach to learning, based on a foundation of respect for cultures, religions, traditions and history. We’re a unique university, the only tertiary institution in Australia where students study ethics, regardless of their discipline. People who study with us have more opportunities to achieve a greater understanding of themselves and the communities they belong to, both locally and globally.

We're proud to teach, encourage and support people who want to make a difference in their own lives and in the lives of those around them, both personally and professionally.

Perhaps one of the most challenging aspects we face when presented with a dilemma in life is the absence of clear-cut, black-white answers. By virtue of their complexity, real life dilemmas pose a range of challenges to our social, cultural, political, behavioural, religious and moral values. These values are key foundations of our world view, and are different for each person.

At ACU National, we recognize and value the diversity of views held by our students and staff. We are committed to delivering a holistic approach to learning that encourages exploration of ideas and open debate. This allows our students to engage in a process of self-discovery and personal growth that will ultimately lead to a better understanding of themselves and of the global community. At ACU National we provide students with more than a textbook education, therefore empowering students with the skills to manage decisions throughout their lives.

Looking for more than just a simple qualification? Qualify with us and you’ll qualify for life.

74 The College Transfer Program

http://foba.lakeheadu.ca/Progs/transfers.htm

Transfer students have always been welcome. From the earliest days, the Faculty of Business has sought to encourage and facilitate students' life-long learning. We have done so by recognizing learning regardless of its many possible origins. Consistent with the belief that we offer one of the most personalized post- secondary educational environments, we have made (and continue to make) every effort to tailor each student's program of studies to his/her current needs based on past education and experience.

We were the first Business School in Ontario to offer a formal transfer program for graduates of 3-Year Community College Business Programs who wanted to add the level of analytical skills commonly taught in university programs to their personal qualifications. We continue to offer this option with a clear understanding gained from years of experience of the support needed to help students make the transition from college to university an easier one.

Normally, if you are a well- qualified graduate of a three-year program and the college work is appropriate to your chosen university program, you could receive up to 30 units of advanced credit. If you have completed a two-year program and performed well, you could receive at least six units.

Credit beyond this may be given on an individual basis where the college and university programs are in similar areas, and where your academic record warrants special consideration.

Please note that for all programs, a diploma must be completed to be eligible to receive advanced credit.

In the granting of credit, attention will be given to:

Each case will be considered individually on its own merits for the program desired.

A McMaster education enables students to develop a set of life and learning skills that promote a continuing ability and desire to learn, and a set of technical and professional skills that permit a range of career choices.

93 prerequisites must be met. Two full CAAT semesters of an academic subject will be the minimum equivalent to grade 12 U/OAC prerequisites.

Transfer Credit

Students who have completed a two year diploma may receive up to two full credits towards an arts and science degree. Candidates who have completed a three year diploma are eligible to receive up to five credits towards a degree.

University of Toronto at Mississauga

As a result, Waterloo has the largest cooperative education program in the world with close to 11,500 students engaged in work/study programs.

From the beginning, Waterloo has continually sought innovative ways to serve its students and society. This spirit has led to one of the largest distance education programs in Canada. Waterloo has also been a pioneer in many fields of research, both applied and theoretical, thus attracting students, professors and staff of very high quality, and substantial amounts of research funding. The results of much of that research have been outward-bound as scores of spin-off companies have been formed through Waterloo’s success in technology discovery and development.

The University of Waterloo will remain focused on the fields and activities where it aspires to both excellence and relevance. It will also continue to provide for its students a social and intellectual environment that seeks to balance comfort and security with discovery and adventure.

97 The richest man in the world dropped in on the University of Waterloo Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, intent on inspiring students to follow in his footsteps with a career in computing.

A few hundred students from the math, computer, and engineering faculties at the southern Ontario University greeted the Microsoft founder under heavy security, as Gates made the only Canadian stop of his six-school North American tour.

"Waterloo is a special relationship for us," Gates told CTV News. "Most years, we hire more students out of Waterloo than any university in the world, typically 50 or even more."
