Results Book Wrestling 14 - 21 August Version History 1.0 21/08/2016 Gustavo Silva First version Wrestling Luta / Lutte Competition Format and Rules Formato e regras da competição / Format et régles de la compétition Olympic competition format Wrestling at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games features men’s and women’s events. The men contest Greco-Roman and freestyle disciplines, while the women compete in freestyle only. Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling differ as follows: • In Greco-Roman, it is strictly forbidden to grasp the opponent below the belt line, to trip or use the legs actively to perform any technique. • In freestyle wrestling it is permissible to grasp the legs of the opponent, to trip and use the legs to perform any technique. Competition progression The competition format is as follows: • Qualification. • Elimination rounds (1/8 finals, 1/4 finals, semifinals). • Repechage. • Finals. If the number of wrestlers in a weight category is not ideal (i.e. is not 8, 16, 32) for the bracket, qualification matches will take place to reach this ideal number. Each match consists of two three-minute periods, with a thirty second break between them. The athlete who scores the most points wins. Superiority of eight points in Greco-Roman and 10 points in Freestyle automatically leads to victory. For all the competitions the timing will run from zero to six minutes on the mat scoreboards. A fall automatically stops the match. In freestyle, in the exceptional case that no wrestler has scored after two minutes in the first period, the referee must obligatorily designate the passive wrestler. If any men’s Greco-Roman bout ends in a 0-0 tie, the victory will be awarded to the wrestler who was judged at the end of the match to be the most active. The tournaments are held in a direct elimination format, with a random draw deciding the initial pairings. There is a repechage for wrestlers who are eliminated by the first and second place finalists. The repechage matches begin with the four wrestlers who lost in the first round against one of the two finalists (up to the losers in the semifinals) by direct elimination. The winners of the two repechage matches will be awarded the bronze medals. The weigh-in for each category takes place on the day before the competition. The tournament for each weight category is completed in a single day. Differences between UWW World Championships and the Olympic Games The International Wrestling Federation (UWW) World Championships has more competitors in each weight category. Changes since the London 2012 Olympic Games The scoring system has been changed to be cumulative over the course of the match instead of per addition of period wins/losses. Wrestling Luta / Lutte Women’s freestyle now has six weight categories, instead of four, and there are six men’s weight categories instead of seven. Sport rules and procedures A match may be won by: a) A fall. b) By injury, withdrawal, default, disqualification of the opponent. c) By technical superiority. d) By points. In case of a tie by points the winner shall be declared by successively considering: The highest value of holds. The lowest number of cautions. The last technical points scored. If a wrestler receives three cautions during a match he/she is disqualified. Note: Double Nelsons are strictly forbidden in women’s freestyle. Tiebreak rules The wrestlers in each weight category will be ranked as follows: • The losers in the two bronze medals matches will be ranked 5th equal. • The classification points determine the rank of wrestlers from 7th place. In case of a ranking tie, they will be ranked by analysing the following criteria successively: 1. The most victories by “fall”. 2. The most match wins by superiority (8 or 10 points difference). 3. The most technical points scored in the whole competition. 4. The fewest technical points given in the whole competition. If the place of the wrestlers cannot be determined, they will be ranked equally. Wrestlers taking part in the repechage rounds will also be ranked according to the classification points earned during the competition. Penalties/disqualification rules Each match will have a winner, except in the case of a double disqualification. Protests/appeals No protest may be lodged after the end of a match, only the result obtained on the mat counts. On each mat a jury of appeal, made up of three members of the International Wrestling Federation (UWW) Bureau, is responsible for ensuring that no serious administration, timing or scoring mistake has been made by the refereeing body during the contest. The coordinator of this jury of appeal must bring any case detected to the attention of the mat chairman and ask for its rectification before the winner of the match is declared. Under no circumstances may the results of a match be modified. During a match, a coach acting on behalf of their athlete, and with his/her agreement, is allowed to ask for one video replay (challenge) on the public video board in case of disagreement with the refereeing body. The match is interrupted during this review. In the case of a positive outcome of the review, the score will be corrected and the team will retain the right to call for another challenge. Wrestling Luta / Lutte Officials The following refereeing body will oversee each match: • One referee. • One judge. • One mat chairman. Replacement of an official during a match is strictly prohibited, except in the case of a serious illness that is medically confirmed. In no case may two officials be of the same nationality, and it is strictly forbidden for an official to oversee matches involving compatriot wrestlers. Mat details The UWW approved mat is 9m in diameter. The following terms are used to explain the various parts of the mat: • The interior section within the red band is the central wrestling area (7m in diameter). • The red band is the passivity zone (1m wide). • The border is the protection area (1.5m wide).
