News and reviews European Cup of Race Walking, an in depth report by Paul Warburton Senior Men: If it was down to Yohann Diniz all races would be held in Dudince – and all would have the word ‘European’ in front of them.

The Frenchman had already recorded a sharp 3:49:00 in March in the Slovakian spa town, and took the race by the scruff of the neck to record a second European Cup triumph to go with two gold-lined European Championships. He was a sorry figure at last year’s Olympics and World Championships, but on this particular stretch of road and with the Euro carrot dangling in front – Diniz consumed it whole. Niggling injury worries behind him, once he took the lead just before 15k, the rest were playing catch-up.

Had he taken a little less time to high five fans on the last lap as well as an unscheduled pit-stop at 40k, he would have easily clawed back the 10 seconds that denied him the European Cup record held by Russia's Vladimir Kanaykin.

European Cup of Race Walking cont’d Early on, it took only four laps before the leading Russian pair was lapping the back markers. Unsurprisingly, Alexey Bartsaykin and the little known Konstantin Maksimov were heading the charge joined at the 5k-mark by Diniz in 22:33. Mikhail Ryzhov and Ivan Noskov shadowed 20 yards behind, and in their wake, two Poles and two from Ukraine were also biding their time. But if there was ever a doubt about the task facing the recording table, nearly half the field of 49 had been lapped already. By 10k (45:04), all four Russians crowded the Frenchman with the equally divided Poland/Ukraine quartet 31 seconds back.

However, the rest of the field were disparate ones and twos, except for the Portuguese team throng almost a minute behind at this point. Diniz opted for breathing space and eased forward eight seconds at 15k. He increased it by five at 20k (1:20:48) with the Russians a minute plus ahead of everyone else. Increasing the gap to almost a minute at 30k (2:14:05) the relentless pace set by Diniz as the sun rose took its toll on first Maksimov who drifted from his team-mates at this point, recovered, and then saw Bartsaykin lag as the Frenchman recorded a couple of quick laps at 4:24 each. As he turned the screw, the Russians were done team bonding. It was every man for himself, with Ryzhov forcing the split and the other two also showing gaps between each other.

The first Russian held on for a seven-minute improvement, although he almost limped across the line in contrast to the sprightly Diniz who had time to kiss the mascot. Noskov came through for bronze. Ihor Hlaven was on two disqualification cards for more than 30k, but the walker from Ukraine defied the odds for fourth, and Poland’s Grzegorz Sudol used his experience to claim fifth.

Jesus Angel Garcia was a winner on this course an amazing 12 years ago. Where the 43-year-old gets his enthusiasm from is anyone’s guess, but in a last 100m sprint, the Spaniard held off team-mate Claudio Villanueva, nine years his junior, by two seconds to claim 11th, and only a little over eight minutes slower than 2001.

Diniz was delighted to have come back from a poor couple of years. He said: “It’s true I seem to be inspired by European competition, and I don’t know why. “I like Dudince. It’s a small town, but it has a big, big heart and it inspires me. The problems I had over the last two years are known, but I’m particularly pleased to have won here. “Because it was very, very hot, I think it gives me even more hope for the World Championships later this year

Junior Men: They tried to tie the race – but the two leading Russians forgot all about electronic recording. Nikolay Markov and Parshin Pavel held hands aloft as they crossed the finish line, but that pesky tenth of a second split them at last. The latter got the nod, but you can bet the room they share at the Saransk Walking Centre in Russia sees the two medals side by side on their table.

The pair was exactly that from the gun, inseparable, save for a couple of minutes when Spaniard Alvaro Martin got in between them at the beginning. That lasted but half a lap and there on it was a just a question of how much they would win by – and in the end not as much they thought.

Page 2 of 27 Contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] Race Walking Record May 2013 In association with the Race Walking Association

European Cup of Race Walking cont’d Fast improving, Vito Minei tried to rein in the pair but even though the Italian claimed a brave bronze, after walking alone for the second half of the race, the few seconds’ difference proved elusive.

The two Russians and Martin hit the first kilometre at 4:05, with the next lap marginally quicker with a group of six including the welcome sight of a new nation – Turkey, challenging for top honours.

The Russian double act then did a disappearing act down the road to hit 3k in 12:10, with Martin settling for safety in the next group. There was 15 seconds from Russia to a Spanish pairing, now Marc Tur and Menei had joined the chase.

It was 20:28 at half way, with Martin paying for his early charge when shown the dreaded red disc that means disqualification. Minei was now a safe third, with Tur already 100m behind and tiring. In contrast, Marius Savelskis leapt ahead for fourth to get Lithuania a long-awaited mention at a major walk.

There were plenty of personal bests, nine in the first 17, despite the fact it was high noon and blistering. Parshin was surprised he wasn’t allowed to tie with his friend. “We are great friends in and out of training, and we wanted this to be a joint win,” he said. “It doesn’t matter, we know what wanted to do.”

Minei is now looking forward to the European Junior Championships on home soil at Rieti in July. He added: “It was hot, but I live in the south of Italy, and this", he said pointing to the sun, "is normal for me.

Women 20k: By the time they’re finished, Anisya Kirdyapkina and Sergey Kirdyapkin won’t have room for the furniture – the medals will have taken over. Olympic, World, European Cup and other trophies have piled up in the trunk, Anisya finally converting in this competition a pair of silvers into gold. At the beginning, a score of walkers went through 2k in 9:20, comfortable for this array of talent.

That wasn’t going to last long, and it didn’t. Gradually, the rubber band between the Russian four and Elisa Rigaudo got stretched to the point where at 7k (31:17), the Italian had all but snapped it. But Rigaudo could see at the turn that it was even further back to fourth. In fact, it was far from obvious who that was with the leaders passing back markers for the second time already. Clearer was the fact that Kirdyapkina was leaving team-mates, Marina Pandakova, Vera Sokolova, and Irina Lumanovato fend for themselves!

She was 30m ahead at 9k, and one lap later at halfway, (44:06) had transformed 30m into 30 seconds. Rigaudo was going solo a minute later, and then the first group sporting different countries followed in the Italian’s wake.

In fact, for the first time in the Italian’s illustrious career she called it a day at 12k, clearly in distress.

European Cup of Race Walking cont’d Two Portuguese a Ukrainian and one each from and Italy were on the hunt once she moved to the side of the road. With three to go, the winner was 1:05 ahead of her three friends, and there was an entire length of street (200m) to Ana Cabecinha having creviced daylight, and in the afternoon heat it was very bright, between her and the chasers.

Over the next 150m came Elenora Georgi, (Italy), Ines Henriques (Portugal), Lyudmyla Olyanovska (Ukraine), Beatriz Pascual (Spain), Vera Santos (Portugal) all suffering, but all chasing top 10 places. Sokolova decided it was time to go when she heard the bell, and quickly opened up a decisive gap on Pandakova and Lumanova.

The former world record holder was rewarded with silver to go with the gold she won two years ago. And third was won in a sprint-off by Pandakova, and to say Russia dominated the team event doesn’t tell the half. All four were home two minutes before Cabecinha delightedly crossed the line for fifth.

Kirdyapkina betrayed an ambition far less than she achieved. “I wanted to finish at least second Russian, and no further back than sixth. During the race the heat hurt my head, but now I will be a part of the next World Championships in .“ Italy’s Giorgi reckoned that coming from Milan was just as painful. “It’s raining at home,” she said, “but this was probably my best race, even though I have gone faster

Men 20k: This was the best race of the day as far as a man versus man event. The title looked a foregone conclusion with two laps to go: Denis Strelkov from Russia was going to win. But having built up a substantial lead, the Russian suddenly appeared to slow. But the truth was Matej Toth and Miguel Angel Lopez was going faster.

After a string of Russian victories throughout the day, it looked as if an upset was on the cards when a 35 second advantage earlier dwindled to just 10 with one more kilometre to race. Spurred on by a home crowd, 's Toth went after Lopez. The Spaniard went after the Russian, and the anguished face of Strelkov made it plain what the winning effort cost him as he crossed the line.

It was all very different when a gang of many members went through 3k in 12:10. Ireland’s Robbie Heffernan and Strelkov were marginal chiefs, but even when the group reached 5k (20:21) there were few willing to abdicate a grip on the top 15. Around 70 metres back three Poles and a Portuguese were straining to stare at the leaders backs. By 10k (40:49), the group had been thinned to 10. Spain’s Ben Sanchez was a noticeable casualty after he called it a day, but the rest ploughed on, immune to the conditions.

The two following from around 100m were former European Cup winner Giorgio Rubino and Ivan Losev from Ukraine. Any pretence of a truce was dead at 12k.

Strelkov cut loose, and five metres back his three team-mates also cut the tow rope to an illustrious gathering including local favourite Toth, Norway’s Eric Tysse, Christopher Linke (Germany) and Lopez.

Page 4 of 27 Contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] Race Walking Record May 2013 In association with the Race Walking Association

European Cup of Race Walking cont’d The rest of Europe including Heffernan was having none of that and soon dragged back the trio – but not Strelkov who was clearly going for broke. Having already recorded a personal best on home soil in February where it was also sunny down on the Black Coast, the Russian clearly has a penchant for warm walking. Even though he was 21 seconds up on Toth at 15k, Lopez and Ivanov (Russia), the trio were having a battle royale for the rest of the medals.

With two laps to go Lopez pushed on followed by Toth, and the rest headed backwards. At the end, a happy Toth admitted adrenalin had kicked in. “Of course, there was pressure to do well at home,” he said. “I got a second place (at 20k) two years ago, and have made progress since then as well.

“I was thinking maybe we could catch Strelkov, but he had just enough.” The Russian winner reckoned he ‘dared to dream’ after posting his 1:19:53 PB only in February. He added: “It was very hard during the race, too hot, too hard – but I felt in fantastic form

Junior women 10k: The junior girls 10k was so one-sided – a boxing trainer would have thrown the towel in at the equivalent of the first round. The Russians came out fighting, but Ekaterina Medvedeva and Nadezhda Leontyeva weren’t even left to duel each other after the first two laps.

Dudince residents and walking fans having ventured to the Slovakian village had to guess at the times after the big clock at the finish failed to start – but there was no doubting the class act. Medvedeva won the world junior championships last year, and a 22-second reduction on her PB in February was enough to psych the rest of the field even before the gun.

At 5k, she hit her own watch timer at 22:03, with Leontyeva 23 seconds back, only two seconds up on a spirited attempt by Anežka Drahotová from next door in the Czech Republic. But just to make sure, Medvedeva powered on – and there was a lot bigger gap this time over her team- mate than in Barcelona. In fact, more than a minute when Medvedeva heard the bell. Her finishing time was pretty good in comparison with her 43:50 PB, considering heat and any lack of a challenge.

A long way back, but still on the podium was Drahotová.

The willowy walker from the Czech Republic had given it a spirited go earlier, and unlike Medvedeva, she will still be eligible for the European Cup in 2015. Oxana Golyatkina came in fourth, and Viktoryia Rashchupkina from Belarus looked a lot better than most by the finish.

All the same, there were huge gaps between the first four: more than four minutes, and each around 30 seconds, apart from the one between the Czech and Leontyeva. In a race of attrition for teenage girls, the winner was getting a quickish massage and hugs from coaches and friends in the recovery tent when the last 15 in the race had yet to hear the bell

Hewitt Cup 2013 - Round 1 – 30.4.2013 by George Smolinski Jasmine Nicholls (South Leicestershire College) and Emma Achurch (Countesthope College) clocked excellent sub 10 minute times in the first race of Leicester Walking Club’s Hewitt Cup race walking series. Farina Rashid (Sir Jonathon North) claimed third place.

In the boys race Benjamin Allen (Leysland H.S.) continued where he left off last season when he was unbeaten during that Hewitt Cup series. Philip Brown and Blaby Stokes team-mate, Jake Fish, took the other podium places.

In this competition the individual standings are based on a handicapping system which encourages all competitors to improve, or get close to, their best times over the 3 race series.

Emma Achurch tops the girls table ahead of Nicholls and Farina Rashid. Jake Fish (Blaby Stokes) has taken an early lead over Allen (last year’s Champion) in the boys’ league standings.

Full results later in the record. Heritage Group Sarnia WC Championships : Elliott Tastes Victory Again by Rob Elliott Rob Elliott, once a prolific winner in Guernsey, once again secured a victory after a few years without one, when easily winning the third race in the Heritage Group Championships. He had the company of Phil Lockwood for the first six of sixteen laps, with Phil soon dropping away as halfway was reached. Elliott reached this point in 30.15, before producing a negative split to just ease inside the hour mark. Lockwood, having a race he will probably like to forget, finished over three minutes behind with Kevin Le Noury taking third place.

Jayne Le Noury was the women’s winner in 73.29, ahead of Rose Druckes and Kay Coulson who walked to within seconds of her personal best.

Peter Beckerleg had the walk of the day as he removed two and a half minutes off his best time to finish with 73.01 and take the win in the accompanying handicap series.

Full results later in the record. Graham Mann Team race, Les Amarreurs, Guernsey by Rob Elliott A good walk by Kay Coulson gave her both an individual handicap win and a share in the winning team for the Graham Mann Team Trophy. Teaming up with Dave Dorey in 4th place and Jayne Le Noury in 6th, their combined watch time of 69.17 was three quarters of a minute faster than the second team combination.

The handicapped 3 kilometres walk saw Kay cross the line first, 15 seconds ahead of Rose Druckes and a further few seconds up on third placed Harriet Payne. Harriet had a good race removing 40 seconds from her previous best time.

The fastest time of the day was visitor Mark Easton’s time of 14.08. Walking for Surrey Walking Club, he is the current Race Walking Association President and a regular walker in Guernsey. Mark is still the British record holder of this distance on an outdoor track with a time of 11.24.4 set many years ago.

Graham Mann Team race cont’d He could have done with this speed today as having set off 30 seconds after Jason Le Noury, he caught the youngster today after 2.5 kilometres and moved ahead before Jason came back and left Mark behind by seven seconds in the final few minutes of walking.

Easton had the final say with actual times as his 14.08 was ahead of Jason’s 14.31, with Stuart Le Noury the third quickest with 14.53. Fastest of the women was Jayne Le Noury with 20.33, followed by Rose Druckes 21.14 and Harriet Payne on 22.17.

Sarnia WC: Heritage Group Champs Race Four: Pleinmont to Lancresse by Rob Elliott There were easy wins for the defending Heritage Champions in the fourth race of the Championship series. Men’s race winner Stuart Le Noury led from the start to cross the line in 88.38, well ahead of second walker home Phil Lockwood.

With the cold and wet conditions not helping on the route around the coast from Pleinmont to Lancresse it did not stop Women’s Champion Jayne Le Noury get close to her best ever time set last year as she won the women’s race from Rose Druckes and Kay Coulson.

Full results later in the record. 10th European Cup of Race Walking, Dudince, Slovakia by Bridget Kaneen The small spa town of Dudince has always been popular as a destination for early season performances and it hosted the European Cup for a 3rd time on a new 1 kilometre loop course and while this meant that the turns were rather tight and technical for the athletes, it made for exciting racing and equally frantic activity at the feed stations as the temperatures were climbing towards 30 in the middle of the day.

Great Britain had a six strong squad of competitors with two of the team making their international debuts. Cameron Corbishley who at just 16 years was one of the youngest in the competition and the other being Bethan Davies who won the U.K. championship on her 20km debut in Coventry last month.

First event on the packed programme was the 50k event and the favourite was Yohann Diniz already the holder of two European titles, he was content to sit in the lead group with the Russian team for company.

Dominic King also started positively with the clear aim of achieving the World Championship ‘A’ standard and he settled into a position just inside the top 20 along with Ireland’s Michael Doyle who was making a debut at this distance. Dom went through 5km at 23.45 and 10km at 47.28 and holding his position he was pacing himself well for a sub four hour performance, however he was disqualified just before the 14 km mark. While naturally disappointed, he was upbeat after subsequent work done with the team physiotherapist, identified areas of weakness and imbalance which could be leading to technical problems. He now has remedial work to do as well as his training in the lead up to the Dublin Grand Prix at the end of June where he hopes conditions will be more favourable for a sub 4 hour clocking.

After 10km was reached, Diniz took charge at the head of the race and apart from a surge from Rhyzov at the 36km point. Diniz kept his composure and even had time for a toilet break with 6km remaining and finishing in 3.41.08 was three minutes clear of Rhyzov whose challenge faded in the last 5km. A popular victory, the Frenchman was the only walker to prevent a clean sweep of titles for the Russian team.

Jamie Higgins and Cameron Corbishley were next to face the starter in the Junior men’s 10km event and both started their races sensibly, particularly in view of the blistering hot weather conditions and having had such cold early spring weather in the U.K. which could only add to being underprepared for the racing conditions on the day. Jamie positioned himself in 15th and Cameron in 50th.

Page 8 of 27 Contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] Race Walking Record May 2013 In association with the Race Walking Association

10th European Cup of Race Walking cont’d The early kilometres were fast with only Spanish walker Alvaro Martin going with the pace of the Russian duo of Pavel Parshin and Nicolay Markov of just slightly over 4 minute km pace but he was removed from the race before halfway when Italian Vito Minei took up the chase. Both Jamie and Cameron had settled well and were patiently working their way through the field as others weakened. By the halfway mark Cameron had made progress up to 43rd position and Jamie was up to 13th. Jamie maintained his momentum well and progressed through to 10th position at the finish, the highest ever placing by a British walker, a superb performance in this company and to the clear delight of British supporters who had travelled to watch the event. Despite being one of the youngest competitors in the whole event, Cameron walked with great maturity and progressed further to finish in 41st position in his second best time ever, quite an achievement in such high level competition. The British pair finished a very creditable 12th in the team standings ahead of Czech Republic, Germany and Poland. The Russian duo of Parshin and Markov tried to finish together but Parshin was given the advantage with Minei a clear third for the remaining podium place.

Bethan Davies has come a long way since moving from Novice walker through to U.K. champion in little over 12 months, but her first International race was a tough task. She walked positively in the early kilometres and held her form well during the first half of the race with 52.26 at halfway, but the hot temperatures took their toll in the second half, though she stuck to her task determined to finish, which she did in 1.54.12 a time which matched the performance of Johanna Jackson in her first international walk and she will have benefitted greatly from the experience. The Russian women dominated the top four positions as Anisya Kirdyapkina took the win in 1.28.40 from Vera Sokolova and Marina Pandakova, Portugal athlete Ana Cabacinha in 5th was best of the rest. The final British interest of the day was in the Senior Men’s 20km walk. Alex Wright who already has the A standard for the World championships set in Lugano in March and Tom Bosworth who recently improved his p.b at the Podebrady meeting in April, has two B standards and is in good form.

In the early kilometres there was a large lead group which included Irelands Robert Heffernan as well as Slovakian walker Matej Tóth who was the best hope for a medal on home soil, Alex was in 38th position and Tom just a few seconds further back in 50th. The lead group was still together in the mid stages of the race until drama at the feed station as Heffernan took a fall while trying to get his drink. By this time both Alex and Tom were working their way through the field in 30th and 31st position respectively. Everything changed for the British pairing at 16km when Tom appeared to push on in the closing kilometres and Alex began to struggle to stay in touch. In the final shake up it was yet another Russian walker Denis Stelkov who prevailed over Spanish walker Miguel Ángel López and Tóth a further couple of seconds back for the final podium spot. Tom maintained his position to the finish and was 31st and in the company of many athletes who have already achieved world championships ‘A’ qualification standard times, a great competitive performance. Alex continued to struggle but to his credit he stuck to his task and determined to get to the finish, though dropping to 43rd position he was clearly disappointed that it was not his day.

10th European Cup of Race Walking cont’d In the junior women’s 10km it was Ekaterina Medvedeva who prevailed over fellow team member Nadezhda Leontyeva with a clear margin of over 90 seconds. Anežka Drahotová from Czech Republic was a further 15 seconds back for third. All in all a very positive showing from the Great Britain team and clearly the fruits beginning to show that the investment in the National Race Walking centre in Leeds has been a good one for the future of our sport, particularly with the younger crop of athletes seeming to be much better prepared physically and mentally to meet the high standards of competition that they face at this level of the sport and with these improved performances will encourage more talented athletes to be attracted to our discipline.

Link to results http://www.european-athletics-statistics.org/db/earesults.php?CID=12841618 Team announced for the Small Nations Cup England Team for the Small Nations Match 15th June Breda, Holland 20kms Men Daniel and Dominic King 10kms Women. Helen Butcher, Jasmine Nicholls and Lauren Whelan 10kms Junior Men Guy Thomas and Callum Wilkinson. The match is against Ireland, Belgium, Holland, Denmark and .

Congratulations to all those selected and good luck with your preparation and the racing. Inter Area Match, 18th May 2013 by Ann Perry Due to calendar pressures in 2012 the match was not held; the 2013 match was anticipated to be well supported. All three areas had some age groups with little or no representation, which is something which the sport as a whole needs to address, more athletes coming into the sport would be a good start.

It was agreed that the match should operate the experimental pit lane rule for all age groups, which would enable the teams to avoid losing athletes altogether by disqualification, and be able to score points for the team.

The pit lane rule worked reasonably well, with few complaints, but many comments, some good some bad; it was noted that the rule did require many additional officials to operate, and also needed a very full explanation to the athletes at the commencement of each race. Constructive comments and suggestions on the rule would be welcomed by the RWA.

The weather promised to be wet and windy, in the event it was windy and not too cold, good weather for competitors, not necessarily for the officials.

Thanks to the Northern Area for hosting this event, and to all the officials from across the country who turned out to make the event possible. Particular mention to Karen Davies who stepped in as timekeeper at very short notice.

The results which appear in the results section of the Record show how close the result was. Congratulations to the Southern Area on a very creditable win in 2013, hopefully, the trophy can be shared around the areas next year. It is the Southern Area to host the 2014 event, news of date and venue will be advised in due course.

Farewell to a frequent Essex Visitor by Dave Ainsworth Sorry to report that, at the age of 90 years, JACK FITZGERALD has taken his leave of us.

Jack took to athletics in a big way while in the Royal Air Force's Bomber & Coastal Commands during the latter half of WW2, in which he served as aircrew. On demob he joined Mitcham AC, a Club he was to serve as Honorary Secretary.

In 1950 he ran the famous Poly Marathon (Windsor-to-Chiswick) in 3.03.15. He kept a racing & training diary which showed totals of 1,238 & 1,448 miles for 1951 & 52 respectively. Jack rated his best race was a 3rd at the Segley 15 Miles (Wolverhampton) in 1.32.34 behind Bill McInnis (1) & Larry Scott (2).

He covered 60 miles weekly running from home-to-work and back (Croydon & Streatham). His best marathon time was 2 hours 39 minutes, indeed at age 71 he ran a 3.16 marathon. Jack always wanted to be in the top 30 at the famous Finchley 20 Miles, but sadly never did despite running consistently around 1.55.

Jack reminded us that in his best days, many ran in plimsolls, not in advanced designed trainers. He won the Surrey 20 Miles in 1953 clocking 1.58.30. After suffering a cartilage injury when aged 71 years, he took to race walking. Jack was active, as records show him to have raced 19 times in 2006 accounting for a total of 141,706 metres. His 2008/2009 recordings were 12 races/88,097 metres & 15 races/48,481 metres respectively.

On one occasion Jack was taken ill with a heart complaint while competing in the United States, without travel insurance so running-up large medical bills. It showed the good side of athletics as a collection to offset Jack's outlay was well supported. Jack became very much a back-marker often finishing long after the penultimate finisher.

Many organisers allowed Jack to commence his efforts before advertised starting times and adjusted results sheets afterwards, which Jack appreciated. At such an age it was to his credit that he still raced so it was sad that, too often, he was the back-marker who got the chop - but even on such occasions his cheerful smile never deserted him.

When reaching his 90th birthday in January Jack said it would do for him, as it was long enough! Jack was associated with the British Veterans Athletics Federation (as he continued to call it), Mitcham AC, Southern Veterans AC & Surrey Walking Club. He was married to Gwen for 51 years until her passing-on. Jack died in a Putney Residential Home after a few years in which his health had been "up-and-down". Jack leaves us all with many memories.
