Arthur Conan Doyle Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930), British physician and author, is today universally remembered for creating the characters of Sherlock Holmes, the great detective, and his loyal friend and companion Dr. John Watson. Conan Doyle composed the Holmes/Watson stories over a period of forty years beginning in 1887. These classic tales, set in Victorian and Edwardian London and the English countryside, have enthralled generations of readers and have been made into numerous movies and a popular BBC/PBS television series. The Sherlock Holmes stories are available from the New Bern-Craven County Public library in a number of one-volume editions. Some individual stories are available as audio tapes.
