SCHOOL MATINÉES Many productions offer weekday matinées where schools can introduce students to the power of storytelling supplemented by study guides and post-show conversations with the cast. Tickets for these performances range from $5 to $10 per student, making a field trip to Wayne State University affordable for all.

To Sangana This dynamic dance company thrills audiences with quality African-derived dance and drum presentations, guaranteed to inspire, invigorate, educate, and entertain. The company celebrates rich cultural traditions from the African heritage, as well as the contemporary African- American experience.

Freedom Players The Freedom Players create a new social justice project each year which illuminates and engages students in Detroit Public Schools Community District in current socio- political challenges, utilizing teaching artists through performance and conversation on race and privilege as a means of bridging communities.

 Company One Dance The lecture-demonstration performance format is built to engage students in an experience of seeing and experiencing movement as a form of communication.

 Motor City Cabaret Our musical theatre outreach program aims to create an awareness and appreciation of the art of theatre and dance through an energetic and informative 50-minute performance.

In recognition and appreciation of Maggie Allesee’s history of generous support of the arts at Wayne State University and of theatre and dance in particular, the WSU Board of Governors approved the renaming of the theatre and dance department in 2012. They had originally named it the Maggie Allesee Department of Dance in 2000 when Dance and Theatre were separate departments.

Maggie’s contributions as a volunteer, philanthropist, and community and civic leader have been vast and varied. An avid supporter of the arts, she has served as a board member for the Cranbrook Academy of Arts, Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center, Detroit Metropolitan Dance Project, Detroit Symphony Orchestra Hall, Meadow Brook Theatre, Michigan Opera Theatre, Music Hall, Eisenhower Dance Ensemble, Oakland University Department of Music, Theatre and Dance, Kendall College of Art and Design, the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, Wayne State Hilberry Understudies, and many more.

In addition to donating her time, talents, and knowledge, she also a generous financial contributor to many organizations, particularly in arts and education. She has given individual gifts of $1 million or more to The Parade Company, Oakland University for the Maggie Allesee School of Nursing to establish a Chair in Gerontology, WSU for the Bob Allesee (Allison) Endowed Chair in Media Studies, Detroit Historical Museum, Music Hall and $2 million plus gifts to WSU for the Dance Department, Florida State University for a major statue and the establishment of the Maggie Allesee National Center for , and Michigan Opera Theatre for the reception room and library. Mrs. Allesee was recognized for her $3 million gift to Hospice of Michigan with the unveiling of the Maggie Allesee Center for Quality of Life. She has received four Honorary Doctorate Degrees from Kendall College of Art and Design, Wayne State University, Oakland University, and Florida State University.

HANNAH ANDERSEN (Choreographer) served as Lead Dance Faculty at Whatcom Community College where she designed the dance curriculum. She served on teaching faculty at University of Oregon, WWU, and FSAF. Hannah received the 2017 “Doug Risner Prize” in JODE. BRYAN AND SHAINA BAIRA (Choreographer) Shaina Baira was born and raised in Victoria, Texas and received her BFA in Dance at the University of Iowa. She completed her certification as a Movement Analyst at the Laban Institute of Movement Studies, and completed studies in religion and philosophy at the New York All Faiths Seminary International. She has performed and taught in Haiti, , Italy the UK, Belgium, and through the USA. She is an ordained Interfaith Minister and member of The Feath3r Theory. Bryan Baira, originally from Carleton, MI, is a graduate of Wayne State University with a B.F.A. in dance. He has performed and taught around the world in places such as: Colombia, South Korea, Turkey, Tajikistan, and Armenia; as well as throughout NYC and the United States. He has danced with Nicholas Leichter Dance, Brian Brooks Moving Company, David Dorfman Dance and ThirdRailProjects. Bryan is an active sound designer/musician and is a member of The Feath3r Theory and is honored to have been selected as one of Dance Magazine’s ‘Top 25 to Watch’ for 2013. Together the couple currently teach as Adjunct Faculty in the Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance at Wayne State University. PROFESSIONAL COMPANY-IN-RESIDENCE

GERMAUL BARNES (Choreographer) is a choreographer, director, master educator, scholar and designer with a multifaceted career spanning more than thirty years in . Global in vision and influence, he is known for a bold, urgent, energetic movement style, steeped in spirituality and optimism. His work regularly reflects his in-depth knowledge of and interest in anthropology, dance of the African Diaspora, , and social justice. His latest commission, a new work “In the Folds” for Alabama , premiered in April of 2019. Barnes is a BESSIE Award-winning former dancer repetiteur for the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. He is currently resident choreographer at the Alabama School of the Fine Arts, curator for the Contemporary Improvisation for Black Men, choreographer adviser for One Dance-UK’s-Dance of the African Diaspora and Movement Research, and advisory board member and curator for the Thelma Hill Performance Arts Center. SALLY BREMER (Stage Manager) is excited to continue her work at Wayne State with the December Dance Concert. Recent credits include Heathers (Wayne State University), The Beauty Queen of Leenane (Detroit Public Theatre), and Spring Awakening (University of Minnesota, Morris). HANNA BRICSTON (Choreographer) grew up dancing and training in both Elgin and Chicago. A graduate from Larkin High School’s Performing Arts program, Hanna accepted a company position with River North Dance Chicago in 2004. Within her 12 years dancing at RNDC, Ms. Brictson choreographed on the company, worked as Rehearsal Assistant, and performed all over the world. Hanna most recently danced and assistant Rehearsal directed for two seasons with Visceral Dance Chicago. Hanna has danced in works by Frank Chaves, Robert Battle, Danielle Agami, Nick Pupillo, Monica Cervantes, Mauro Astolfi, Ivan Perez, Sidra Bell, Lauri Stallings, Harrison McEldowney, Sherry Zunker, Frank Chaves, Luca Signoretti, Anton Rudakov, Julia Rhodes,and Kevin Iega Jeff. BRIAN COLE (Sound Designer) is a lighting and sound supervisor at Wayne State. Show credits include Cloud 9, Colored Museum, Xtigone, Heathers The Musical, and Mary Poppins. STAFF

DOMINIQUE DENSON (Choreographer) is a senior BFA dance major at the Maggie Allesee Department of Theater and Dance. She has had the opportunity to work with guest artist such as, Lisa LaMarre, Dr. Ras Mikey, Tracy Halloran, Jennifer Harge, Haleem Rasul, Della Hamby, and Meg Paul. Dominique has been a member of the Contexture Dance Detroit Company for three seasons, under the direction of Tracy Halloran. In 2016, she traveled to New York City with the company and performed at the DUMBO Dance Festival. Currently, she is a dance instructor at local studios. Dominique is very excited to share her choreographic work, The Idea of the Fall and hopes everyone will enjoy the show. BFA DANCE - SENIOR Creative Team

KRISTI FAULKNER (Choreographer) is a queer-identified performing artist committed to discovering how bodies can serve as agents of social and political change. She strives for authenticity by shedding the artifice of technically-focused performance to show what makes us human in ways that are relatable, humorous, and sometimes uncomfortable. Her work has been presented and commissioned throughout the Midwest, Southern US, and New York. She is a 2016 & 2018 Maggie Allesee Choreography Award finalist and a Knight Arts Challenge recipient for Not In My House - a collaboration with the Ruth Ellis Center to engage and inspire LGBTQ youth through performance and storytelling. She holds an MFA in choreography and performance from The College at Brockport, SUNY. PART-TIME FACULTY

DELLA HAMBY (Choreographer) Rooted in Metro Detroit, Della Hamby is a verified influencer, outstanding professional performer, choreographer, actress & movement mentor having worked closely with today’s most mainstream artists and eminent projects including but not limited to Beyoncé, Chris Brown, Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Snoop Dogg & many more! Della is a Wayne State University graduate and artist achievement award recipient holding a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Dance. She is the youngest sibling of 2 brothers & named after her mother. Better known as “Damn Della” for her bodacious vocabulary of movement, she began appearing in the entertainment industry via Walt Disney World, WNBA, MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew and NBC’s America’s Got Talent and remains in demand over a decade later. BOSMAT NOSSAN (Choreographer) is an Israeli independent choreographer performing her work internationally. She is the artistic director and founder of the Gaga teacher training program, a former dancer of the renowned Batsheva Dance Company and the Inbal Pinto and Avshalom Pollak Dance Company. Bosmat is a staff member of ‘La Collectiz’- a graduate program for contemporary dancers. She was awarded with the Israel-America Cultural Foundation scholarship in 2004 and 2006, as well as the Remco award for promising artist in 2005, and a danceWEB scholarship in 2011. “Gaga is a new way of gaining knowledge and self-awareness through your body. Gaga is a new way of learning and strengthening your body, adding flexibility, stamina and agility while lightening the senses and imagination. ALLESEE GUEST ARTIST

BROOKLYN LASHAE PARKS (Choreographer) is a 20-year-old performing artist from Detroit, Michigan. Brooklyn has been dancing and singing for eight years. She is a graduate of Cass Technical High School and is currently a third year BFA dance major. Brooklyn is passionate about all arts and continues to perfect her craft. BFA DANCE - JUNIOR

JANE PASTOR (Costume Designer) Started her career in education at University of Toledo, where she taught and designed for the theatre department, before moving to Detroit. She spent several summers (2012-2017) designing costumes for Oberlin University’s opera program in Arezzo, Italy. Currently, Jane lives in the metro-Detroit area and designs custom costumes for ice and ballroom dancers. Jane has been a part-time faculty member in the theatre department, since 2017, teaching stage makeup. FACULTY

MEG PAUL (Artistic Director, December Dance Concert) brings significant professional experience in ballet and Broadway performance and has worked closely with important dance pioneers and choreographers in the field including Gerald Arpino, Robert Joffrey, and Twyla Tharp, William Forsythe, Dwight Rhoden, and Alonzo King. Ms. Paul was a ballerina with the Joffrey Ballet, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, and Ron De Jesus Dance. She was dance captain, lead understudy, and full for Twyla Tharp’s Tony award-winning Broadway musical Movin’ Out. Her awards include The Princess Grace Award, winner of The International Dance Competition of the Americas, Detroit Renaissance Hero, and the Copperfoot Award. Currently, Ms. Paul is Director of Dance and Senior Lecturer at Wayne State University’s Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance. She serves as ballet master for the Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Program Director for Complexions Detroit Summer Intensive and BAIRA Summer Dance Intensive, faculty at Spotlight Dance Works, and teaches master classes for numerous summer intensives around the globe. KAREN PRALL (Choreographer) is currently an instructor/lecturer at Wayne State University, instructing central African and . The Artistic Director of the African dance company at WSU. “To Sangana”. Instructing and exchanging with company “Ballet ZoeBanjay in Monrovia, Liberia. Prall’s training began in Detroit, moving on to New York, studying African and Modern dance from the Ailey school, Dance Theatre of Harlem, LaMama Theatre. Conducting extensive research traveling to Kongo, Senegal, Liberia, Ghana, Suriname, Paris, Maui, four years independent study in Cuba. Performing with the first Congolese company in states “Tanawa”, and “Bichini Bia Congo of Michigan. Artistic director and founder of the Art of Motion Dance Theatre. A member of (IABD) International Association of Blacks in Dance. FACULTY Creative Team

JESSICA RAJKO (Choreographer) is an interdisciplinary scholar/practitioner working at the intersection of somatically informed dance and human-computer interaction design. Her current work investigates the ethical and corporeal implications of data practices on everyday life and within dance communities. Jessica has presented and performed in various collaborative artworks nationally and internationally, including Amsterdam’s OT301, Harvard’s ArtTechPsyche IV, Toronto’s Scotiabank Nuit Blanche festival, and New York City’s Gotham Festival at The Joyce Theatre. She joined Wayne State University’s Department of Dance and Theatre in 2019 as part of a cross-institute Big Data hiring initiative. FACULTY

MATT TAYLOR (Lighting Designer) is a lighting designer for live entertainment. His work in lighting design covers a wide range of genres and styles from concerts and cruise ships to traditional theatre and dance productions. ASHLEY TARAVELLA (Choreographer) trained at Spotlight Dance Works under Liz Schmidt before coming to WSU. Her intensive training includes Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Axis Connect, Molly Shanahan/Mad Shak, BAIRA, and Contemporary Now. She has performed works by Twyla Tharp, Sonya Tayeh, Meg Paul, and Biba Bell. Ashley also trains in Pilates and is an instructor at Spotlight Dance Works. BFA DANCE - SENIOR

DANCE INJURY SPECIALIST: DR. STEVEN J. KARAGEANES, DO Dr. Steven J. Karageanes, DO is a sports medicine and performing arts specialist, and medical director of Sports Medicine at St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia, MI. He is a special consultant to the board of the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science, founding member of Athletes and the Arts, and is one of the first physicians to become certified in performing arts medicine by the Performing Arts Medical Association.
