From the Principal - Welcome back to 2017

Welcome back to all families and students to Northern Beaches Secondary College for 2017. A special welcome to Cromer Campus Year 7 classes pictured here. I have visited all of these classes and am so impressed by their enthusiasm for high school. Thanks to their primary schools and parents, I have noticed our Year 7 students have an incredible grasp of our school values RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY and SUCCESS and are constantly displaying these values. Some of the ways the students are doing this is by wearing perfect school uniform, completing all school work, completing homework, trying their hardest and doing their best in class and showing respect through consistent use of manners with their teachers and each other. Welcome Year 7 and keep up the great work.

What’s New in the Classroom? “Visible Learning” – In all of our classrooms teachers are displaying learning goals and success criteria. This is to ensure every student has maximum clarity regarding what they are learning and more importantly what it will look like when they have achieved it. This is a very simple yet highly effective way to break things down into simple terms and enhance student understanding and learning in every classroom. See some great examples below.

New School Entrances As part of the continued reinvigoration and beautification of our generous grounds some landscaping was carried out at the schools two main entrances. We hope that this creates a more modern, inviting and professional look to the school’s front door.

First P&C Event – 21st Feb

The school’s first P&C meeting for 2017 will be held in the school library on the 21st February at 7pm. All parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. The P&C last year through their tireless efforts have raised enough money to purchase an electronic sign for our school that will be installed in 2017. They ran a highly successful corporate golf day, successfully ran the school canteen, supported all school events and are a vital and supportive part of every child’s education here at Cromer Campus. Please come along and get involved and help guide the wonderful initiatives they are planning for 2017 Yr7 Parent Event for your Diary and beyond. For all Year 7 parents there will be a welcome

Transition Adviser Report

I would like to use the first edition of the Cromer Courier to introduce my role as Cromer Campus’ Transition Adviser. A106 is now a restored workspace for myself, and any students or parents who would like to visit. Mr Burrows, our General Assistant has worked extremely hard to organise carpeting and painting, as well as building the furniture in the room.

It is pleasing to be able to report on the successes of our 2016 graduates. Many of our students have gained university entry in courses such as B International Studies, B Information Technology, B Medical Sciences, B Business Administration (Macquarie University), B Commerce and Global Studies (Australian Catholic University). Some students are undertaking pathway studies, such as the Diploma of Communications through the InSearch program at UTS. A number of students are studying at TAFE (Animal Studies, Building and Construction, Childcare, Information Technology). You can also keep an eye out for students who have secured full time positions working in local restaurants and warehouses in the area. I will provide a more comprehensive report on the destinations of our 2016 Alumni in the next Cromer Courier.

This year I will be working closely with Ms Bird (HT Welfare and Careers Advisor), the Learning and Support Team and the Literacy Team to develop the Careers and Transitions Program for our senior students. Our literacy lessons play an important role in this. Year 11 and 12 Literacy not only focuses on literacy skills, but workplace skills, study skills and strategies to support student wellbeing. As students move through Stage 6, they should use their literacy lessons to build their self-awareness and understand how this relates to the world beyond school. I will be supporting students by devising Career Plans that aim to set goals and map out future pathways. To help parents understand more about this, we are hosting a Year 11 Student and Parent Evening on Thursday 16th February.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if there is anything I can do to assist our senior students. Alternatively, if there is any way in which you can support our transition program (expert visits to the school, on-field industry visits) please let me know.

I can be contacted via the office 9981 1155 (ext 139) or email [email protected] I am available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Tracey Fairl ey, Transition Adviser

We look forward to meeting with our Year 11 families at the

Our Values: RESPECT RESPONSIBILITY SUCCESS

How can parents and caregivers support our values ???????

 Ensure their child is in their correct school uniform each day  Ensure their child arrives at school on time every day  Ensure their child is prepared for learning by having all of the necessary equipment every day.

Our Rewards System: The Passport

Students earn stamps for their passport when they demonstrate our values of Respect, Responsibility and Success. There are four stages in the Passport: Bronze: 50 stamps Silver: 100 stamps Gold: 200 stamps Platinum: when Gold has been reached four times. Certificates, awards and activities are planned at each stage to celebrate success. Ask your child to show you their Passport…….each Teacher has their own stamp so you can see where your child is being most successful.

Passports and Senior Students: The Passport is an essential way that students in Years 11 and Year 12 can provide evidence of the contributions they make at school: both in and out of the classroom. This evidence is vital when applying for scholarships, alternative entry programs for university or entry to private colleges. It is also very useful when seeking permanent employment.

Literally Fantastic

In 2016 the Whole School Literacy Program was launched at Cromer Campus. Every day except Tuesday the whole school stops to work on literacy. Every teacher and every student works for a concentrated period working on their understanding and use of language and develops their ability to read and write for learning. Students, teachers and parents have been surveyed and are overwhelmingly supportive of the initiative. Gains are already evident with students demonstrating significant improvements in their literacy in all areas. I would like to thank the amazing Literacy Team who have worked tirelessly to make this dream a reality and look forward to further success in 2017.

Cromer Campus P & C Committee

Welcome back to the parents old and new!

I would like to kick off this year with a big thank you to all the parents and volunteers on last year’s committee. There was a lot of hard work done on the various projects to make it the success it was.

In the past two years, the P&C have completed several projects for the benefit of the students at Cromer; we installed an air conditioning unit in the school gym, followed by a roll down screen with projector in the gym to help with presentations, shows etc. The new computer room was fitted with 14 computers. The largest project we undertook was to take over the canteen with the crowning moment being rated four stars by the Council. Our current project is put up two new electronic sign boards, with the P&C paying for one.

We have a variety of fundraising activities with the most popular one being the Golf Day at the end of the year. During the year we have Bunnings Sausage Sizzles; this helps us raise money and also helps to highlight and let people in the community know about our school. On the open day, we supply snags and cold drinks for the children.

Our goal is to help improve our school wherever possible to benefit our children.

Would you like to be part of this?, This can be done in a variety of ways - you could like to be part of the committee or just assist us when we have a function, all are very welcome. We invite all parents to join the P&C. The first important date on the P&C calendar is the 21st February. It is the Year 7 Parent Evening and traditionally we have the first P & C meeting after this, where the committee is elected. I invite and encourage as many parents as possible to attend this important meeting. You will meet and get to know other parents, members of staff and get a better understanding of what we do. It will start at 7.00 pm in the school library.

This year we are introducing seven new positions, “Parent Year Group Co-ordinators”. We would love to have one for each year and for Integrated Studies, so if you are interested please put your hand up. The other positions are President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary/ Communications and one other new position of Project Co-ordinator. We are very keen to have as many parents as possible involved.

If you are not able to stand for the above positions, there are still plenty of opportunities to be involved. We would love to have you join in for a Sausage Sizzle, a game of twilight golf or volunteer in our four- star canteen. Please drop us your name and contact details.

Hope to see you on the 21st February 2017.

AGENDA: Welcome by President. Treasurer’s Report 2016. President’s Report Hand over to Principal Mr Hong to start the election process.
