STOP THE IGNORANCE AND HATRED, NOW !

The Screven County Confederate Monument was “erected by the Screven County Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons of Veterans, April 26, A.D. 1909.” It was originally located in down- town Sylvania, but in the 1950s a regretted decision was made to modernize the town. The beautiful courthouse was torn down brick by brick and replaced with an ugly block fountain. The park was paved over into a parking lot. With no room for the monument, it was relocated to the new Screven County Memorial Cemetery. There it remained a lone sentry, unscathed until the recent atroc- ity. On the night of August 30, criminals toppled the pillar and destroyed the statue. The GBI, Screven County Sheriff’s Department, and Sylvania Police Department have been investigating. There have been few leads, but no suspects have materi- alized. Camp #549 wishes to thank all Compatriots who have pledged money towards the reward for the arrest and conviction of those guilty. The reward now stands at $10,000. We also thank the Georgia Division leader- ship, namely Commander Tim Pilgrim, for aggressively taking action in the aftermath of this tragedy. Press re- leases and large color newspaper ads have gotten the word out that the SCV means business, and will not take this lying down. Thankfully, the monument base bearing inscriptions was not damaged. It reads: “To the Confederate soldiers who went from Screven County to fight for the South in the War Be- tween the States, and who from 1861 to ’65 nobly illus- trated Georgia on the field of battle, this monument is Destruction erected by their descendants as a memorial of their of private property deeds. “When the call came they left all for the front, and is a gross violation for four years, without recompense or reward, they fought bravely for local self government and the rights of human law ! of the states. “No nation rose so white and fair, or fell so pure of What, or who will be next ? crime.” In large text on front, reminds us of our “Confederate Dead”, including 150 men from Screven County. The fallen pieces of the monument are being held in storage by the City of Sylvania, until we determine when and how to resurrect it. Our camp is seeking esti- mates for its’ repair and replacement. In the meantime, donations for the repair/replacement of the monument may be sent to: SCV Camp #549, 141 Bell Pond Road, Sylvania, GA 30467 Submitted by: Adam Bazemore, Commander Black Creek Volunteers Camp #549

“The forbearing use of power does not only form a touchstone, but the manner in which an individual enjoys certain advantages over others is a test of a true gentleman. The power which the strong have over the weak, the employer over the employed, the educated over the unlet- tered, the experienced over the confiding, even the clever over the silly -- the forbearing or inoffensive use of all this power or authority, or a to- tal abstinence from it when the case admits it, will show the gentleman in a plain light. The gentleman does not needlessly and unnecessarily remind an offender of a wrong he may have committed against him. He cannot only forgive, he can forget; and he strives for that nobleness of self and mildness of character which impart sufficient strength to let the past be but the past. ” ~ Robert E. City of Alpharetta selects SCV for special “treatment” Is this “discrimination” ??????? Discrimination, n. A distinction, as in treatment; esp., an unfair or injurious distinction.

The Georgia Division Sons of Confederate Veterans Resolution and Position on the Confederate Battle Flag WHEREAS, the Confederate Battle Flag is the most recognized symbol of the Confederate States, the Southern region of America and has always been a symbol of Southern Patriotism and Valor; and WHEREAS, the Confederate Battle Flag is a symbol recognized worldwide as a symbol of a people's strug- gle against tyranny, fighting against overwhelming odds, and the struggle for freedom, and liberty; and WHEREAS, the Confederate Battle Flag was not a governmental flag, but was the primary flag of the common Confederate soldier that flew with them dur- ing battle, while on the march, and in Camp; and WHEREAS, most of the early Southern people of the Americas were of Scots and Irish descent and recog- nized the Saint Andrew's cross on the Confederate Battle Flag, (sometimes referred to as the "Southern Cross") as a symbol of their ancestral countries of Scotland and Ireland, which had spiritual meaning to them; and WHEREAS, the Sons of Confederate Veterans are the true inheritors of legacy and symbols for which the Confederate Veterans fought and died; and WHEREAS, the Sons of Confederate Veterans has always condemned the misuse of the Confederate Bat- tle Flag or any of our Nation's flags or symbols by any extremist group or individual, by whatever name they may use, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Georgia Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans, does hereby condemn in the strongest terms possible the slander spoken against the Confederate Battle Flag, or the removal and banning of the Confederate Battle Flag from any memorial, forum and display where the Confederate Battle Flag is being flown as tribute and in honor of the services and sacrifices of the Confeder- ate Soldier. LET IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Geor- gia Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans encourages the citizens of Georgia, America and the people of the world to learn more on the true meaning of the War for Southern Independence and to display the Confederate Battle Flag proudly in honor of the Confederate Veter- ans and for the principles for which they fought.
