(Which, by the way, was ac- tually last week by the time you read this, so the phone call was even longer ago now than it was when I wrote about it - capish?) I booked a facility for my son’s high-school graduation, which will take place (God willing and the creek don’t rise) May 3, 2013. Yes, you read that correctly - 2013. And it’s a good thing I called, too, as that room was already booked for 2010, 2011 and 2012. I was one reservation away from being out of luck. Now, many things could change between now and May 2013, certainly. We could move away. Garrett could fail a few critical classes. We could win a mil- lion dollars and build a home that would have lots of room for entertaining. The facility we booked could be carried away in a tor- nado. The serial arsonist who’s torching public places in Saskatoon could relocate here. But I’m fairly secure that the possibility of any of those scenarios playing out is somewhere between slim and none. I’ve also learned that the only thing I can control are matters under my own control, and that was making the phone call, which I’ve done. Making that move, however, also precipitated a whole host of thoughts and feelings, the overriding one being that of time moving forward faster than I’d ever dreamed possible. When we moved to town, no longer than a blink of the eye ago, Garrett was perhaps four feet tall and required babysitting, most often by our next-door neighbours’ daughter. Now, he’s the tallest member of our family, and our babysitter has a baby of her own. Our ‘little’ boy is attending tackle football practices, doing math homework that is already a bit beyond me (thanks a lot Doug!), “Us moose will just hafta get used to these southern rules –– those elk put out the word that sometimes stays up later than I do during the week - and defi nitely on this side of that blacktop they can shoot you, but on the other side, they can’t shoot you. . . ” on the weekends, and eats more some days than Robin and I com- bined.
