The ski runs that should not to be missed

Tognola Uno One of the twelve best runs in the Dolomites! It runs for nearly three kilometres through the woods of the Tognola Alp, just in front of the snowcapped peaks of the Pale di San Martino. The run is wide but technical and has many changes in direction and gradient. The final steep stretch is a joy for expert skiers.

Cima Tognola This run gives great satisfaction due to the dynamic changes in gradient, width and exposure. It leads from Cima Tognola to Malga Tognola, or combines with the Tognola Tre run for a breathtaking descent dropping one thousand metres to town.

Direttissima The other great black run of the Carosello delle Malghe: it dives 2250 metres down from Punta Ces to the town of San Martino di Castrozza. The repeated changes in gradient and direction make the Direttissima one of the most technical and difficult runs to tackle.

Colbricon One of the most panoramic and fun red runs of the Dolomitsuperski circuit. Perfect from the first descent in the morning to the last one of the afternoon, it is served by a convenient and quick automatic-coupling chair lift equipped with protective bubbles.

Cristiania A very long and technical run with snow in prime condition even on warmer days thanks to its northerly exposure; very steep stretches alternate to quick flat stints from Cima Tognola to Malga Valcigolera, which has been completely renovated for this winter season.

Paradiso Located at Passo Rolle, this is a magnificent and challenging black run that tests the skills of expert skiers with its serious gradients and a snow cover always kept in prime condition. The splendid views are an added bonus to this run.

Colverde runs At the Colverde-Rosetta slopes in San Martino di Castrozza, it is also possible to go night-skiing: there are 2 kilometres of floodlit runs available, running down to the town-centre.

Night skiing on the "Colverde" run

The "Colverde" run, a nice red one with a 2600 m length and 500 m drop, served by a fast cable car, is lit up for night skiing. The run winds through a charming wood of firs and larches with repeated changes in slope and direction, following a wide, medium difficulty track (red with a blue variant), easy to ski and very enjoyable, just below the Pale rocks. It arrives straight in the centre of San Martino and thus is ideal for night skiing. The lighting system consists of 35 "Sunglobe" light balloons: 1.5 m diameter spheres mounted high on the pylons of the snow-making system, diffusing on the run a soft white-bluish light, continuous and steady, with very striking effects.

The magic of the Pale di San Martino lives on even after sunset. As during the day on the slopes of Carosello delle Malghe, you can combine skiing and good food in the evening too: above the Colverde run the Quota 2000 al Colverde hut is open for a snack or a hot punch before the last descent; at the end of the run the Da Meto restaurant offers sophisticated menus inspired by the cuisine, homemade sweets (you must try their buckwheat cake) and grappas flavoured with mountain herbs.

Must to visit

Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park The environmental safeguard is garanteed by the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park, which allows the guestes to discover, through didactic proposals and easy excursions both in winter and summer, the beauty of the biodiversità of our area. The Nature Park provides countless opportunities to discover nature, culture and Alpine history through guided routes, museums and tasting of typical products at the local farms.

The Park Visitor Centers The Visitors Centers represent for the Park a sort of visit card, a means to inform, to provide a first idea of the naturalistic-environmental reality of the involved area. This is the reason of the privileged interest in these structures since the beginning and this is the reason why, after years of experience, we have thought to differentiate them by meeting the environmental diversities on which they work and favoring the cooperation and the gaining awareness of the local population. Each center is a small museum where everyone, besides receiving all the information on the initiatives organized in the Park and subscribe to them, can buy publications, the map of the Park, and material of naturalistic interest.

Villa Welsperg The villa was built in 1853 as the summer residence of the Welsperg Counts; at the beginning of the 1900s it passed under the patronage of Venice and became a place for summer vacations. The surrounding gardens and park have retine some of their original characteristics; for example the magnificent avenue of linden, ash and horse chestnut trees, planted more than 150 years ago. Since 1989 the villa has been the Headquarters and visitor’s centre of the Nature Park. It holds exhibitions on nature, has teaching rooms, a library dedicated to Dino Buzzati and is a starting point of nature walks in the Canali valley and Pradidali.

Points of Interest

Val Venegia Val Venegia, in the northern section of the Park, represents without a doubt one of the most important areas of the Park for its great naturalistic and landscape value. The Valley follows the northern slope of the dolomitic walls of Cimon de la Pala, where it is possible to observe Travignolo glacier with the summits of Bureloni, Focobon and Mulaz closing its head. Woods, pastures, screes, and dolomitic slopes are the fascinating features of the area, while the traditional activities carried out in the summer mountain pastures give the valley the particular taste of local history and traditions.

Val Canali Another charming valley is Val Canali, the southern gateway to the Park. It is very fascinating thanks to the peaks of Cimerlo, Sass Maor, Canali, Lastei, Coro, Sass d'Ortiga and further peaks that, also along demanding paths, lead to many mountain huts. The valley bottom offers further tour opportunities from the small lake Welsperg along the stream Canali, across the meadows of loc. I Piereni or the mixed beech and silver fir woodlands.

Calaita Lake Moving westwards and going from Canal San Bovo along Valle del Lozen, tourists can reach a large plateau with another big stretch of water: Calaita Lake. The lake reflects the white walls of Cimon de la Pala, and the woodlands surrounding it create a natural setting. Several paths leave from here: following them, you can reach the surrounding summits or San Martino di Castrozza.
