"Official Report on the Tour of the Inspection (written by Preiswerk)" Title: "Official Report on the Tour of the Inspection (written by Preiswerk)" Ref. number: D-01.38b.A-VI Date: Proper date: May 1884 Description: P.17 deals with the question of the petition from the Abetifi Christians against Ramseyer (see below No. D). Preiswerk reports that enquiries among the missionaries at and suggest there is something in the charge that Ramseyer was acting as harshly as a king. On the other hand it seems that in the past he has lent the people money, and this has led to bitter experiences. He judges that the people hope that if there were to be a new missionary on the station they would be able to revive the old system. Pp. 47-48 includes a report of a discussion with David Asante about the visit to Kumasi. Working there was most difficult, street preaching could at any time be interrupted by the passing of one of the King's wives. Any mention of death especially before a member of the royal family was taken as a breach of taboos. Apart from the King and his family and the great prince's the population of Kumasi consists of slaves who would not be permitted to form themselves into a Christian Community. Nevertheless this ruined empire has served its purpose for God in that the tribes who are now breaking free have learned to speak - indeed in the Volta district Twi is the language whose use in trade brings advantages.
