SHEKHAR MEHTA

PRESIDENT ROTARY INTERNATIONAL 2021-2022

MESSAGE

13 April 2021

Dear fellow Rotarians: We have been through trying times together. We have helped the world cope with uncertainty and adapt to rapid change. Now is the time for us to dream big. It is time for us to take on major challenges, to do more and grow more, and most of all, for us to care for and share with others.

This year, we note all the ways that we Serve to Change Lives. Service is the rent we pay for our time on earth and we will expand Rotary service as we “grow more and do more.”

We will grow through “Each One, Bring One.” If every Rotary member could bring just one more person to Rotary, there is no limit to how much we can grow. We will do more by putting a special emphasis on empowering girls, so young women can have improved opportunities worldwide. We will also feature Rotary Days of Service, so that all members share in our good works around the globe and look for new ways to serve beyond their backyards.

It is our attitude that defines service. We all have a great opportunity to lead by example and to inspire each other to participate in projects that have a measured and sustained impact.

The District Board has assumed important responsibilities and I thank them for this hard work. They have made a commitment to help grow Rotary, adapt to the digital future and make Rotary more appealing to younger generations. Your good work will help us serve our communities and help Rotary thrive so we can Serve to Change Lives.

Kindest regards,

Dear President,

Heartiest Congratulations on being chosen as Club Leader for the year 21-22.

Pandemic has severely impacted our lives, but we have always risen to the occasion, adapted to the situation and given our best so we could “Serve to Change Lives” following the principle of “Service Above Self”.

We as a team would definitely do wonders in our respective roles as leaders as we work by following the principle “Keep it Simple!” Lot is to be worked on to take Rotary Programs to each and every member of the Club. Equally Important is that they reach Non – Rotarians as well. We need to grow membership; our Rotary International President has given a wonderful formula of “Each One Bring One” which we have to sincerely implement. We expect that your club has a positive growth at the end of year.

Rotary Foundation through its various programs has worked for community at all times. May it be eradicating polio from the world, supporting world through COVID (Disaster) Grants, or various service projects under Six Areas of Focus where now “Supporting Environment” is added as 7th Area. We should also support our Own Rotary Foundation by contributing to Annual Program Fund, Polio Fund, Endowment Fund and various other options. Amount can be of your choice but contribute handsomely and ensure that you’re each and every member contributes. 100% contribution from each and every member of club is expected.

Our Rotary International President’s emphasis is on “Empowering Girls”. He also expects us to Celebrate “Rotary Days of Service” which will establish stronger Synergy amongst Rotary Clubs, Rotaract, Interact and Non – Rotary World. It’s a sincere request to include this in your yearly plan. Plan an Impact Making Project, ensuring proper Public Image, which will definitely help Rotary Grow - “Do More Grow More”.

Our Vision is “Rotary to be most preferred choice of all stakeholders” At District Level we have adapted a new system of empowering enthusiastic Rotarians & Rotaractars to work in various committees of their choice thus developing new leadership with specific focus on women leadership working at various key positions. Request you to develop leadership accordingly in your club level as well by involving members in activity of their choice, understanding new ideas shared by them and acting upon the same. When Rotary Work is done with Passion, Dedication, even while “Keeping It Simple!”, you will Realize that “Nothing is Impossible !!”

Always with you as your team member. So, we say “Action Speaks Better Than Words”. Now the Action Begins…….

MESSAGE

Dear Family of the Rotary Club of Poona,

Our Club was chartered on 10th June 1936. Assuming the mantle of the President of an 85-year old team of dedicated, highly professional and very senior Rotarians is a singular honour that brings with it, great responsibility. It’s a responsibility to measure up to the expectations which our members have of me, and also to engage our club members to live up to the expectations that the Rotary world has of our Club. With our own Indian Rotarian from Kolkata, Rtn Shekhar Mehta, as the President of Rotary International this year, we will surely get a lot of opportunities to contribute to society in many creative ways. I look forward to the enthusiastic support of all our Rotarians and Rotary Anns in this endeavour.

Through the next one year, we will focus our efforts on five key aspects :

• We will maximise the delivery of our social development efforts to a finite population of beneficiaries. We will execute a variety of projects of different avenues of service, simultaneously for the same population, say a group of villages, so that we can achieve holistic development of that community which is clearly visible and tangible to that population. Only then will we move on to the next population set. Some of these projects will likely continue over the next few years. • We will involve each and every club Rotarian and Ann in at least two projects each, through the year. Active personal participation is the key to an engaged family of club members. • We will enhance the administrative processes of our club, to adapt to the various changes that are rapidly coming up in the functioning of Rotary International and RI District 3131. • We will each take personal responsibility for making the membership of our club an even more attractive proposition, something for non-members to aspire and compete for. With a view to the future of our club, say 10 years ahead, we will also attract members who are between 40 to 50 years of age. • We will enjoy every moment that we spend with our club members and the activities we do. Having fun is an important social responsibility which we owe to ourselves.

As you now know, WE are all in this together – for each other, with each other, we will “Serve to Change Lives”.

I am counting on all of you for that.

With best wishes, Bharat ROTARIAN COLONEL BHARAT HALADI PRESIDENT ROTARY CLUB OF POONA 2021-22

CLOSING MESSAGE

The Rotary Year 2020 -21 has been a very challenging year for our Club. Some of our members passed away, including our Dear President, Deepak Londhe, who succumbed to Covid. The Mantle and Baton was again passed on to me, to steer the club, to provide the required leadership in these challenging Covid Times. I must confess and congratulate our Board of Directors, Trustees, and es- teemed Members and Anns, who All stood up bravely, with a Smile, and lent full support to overcome these Trials, to ensure we remain strong, unit- ed and Committed to achieve the cherished goals of Rotary. The Goals which each one of us has pledged to uphold and live by; to serve the Com- munity, to make a difference in the lives of the needy, providing the much- required support, so as to bring some cheer and joy in their lives. While I hand over charge to PE Bharat Haladi and his Team of Generals, I would like our Members to reflect and rekindle the passion and pride they experienced at the time of their induction to Rotary Club of Poona. We need keep that spirit Alive. Thus your involvement by contributing your Time, Money, knowledge, Energy, joy, Love, passion; Or All in One, is very important so as to keep connected to Rotary. In 2019, our Club touched the coveted figure of 100 in Membership. Today I am pained to see our Member- ship drop to 82. Like any Tree which needs the right manure, watering, and caring to ensure it grows strong and provides shade, shelter, fruits - similarly, in Rotary, Membership is the LIFELINE. It needs to be men- tored, cared, fostered and nurtured. Fellowship, participating in Service projects, Club events, introducing New Members, Fund raising, Talking Rotary, sharing your expertise are some of the ways, to enrich the Rotary ex- perience. This in turn results in a healthy Membership Growth and Membership Retention - The Lifeline of Rotary. Times have Changed and we need to Change with the times. We need to adapt to demands and expectations of Today, to continue to remain relevant. The Rotary Wheel is Dynamic and we need to continue to reinvent the wheel as required, so as to attract New Members. Before I close, I would like thank my BOD Team, our PDGs, Sam Irani, Vivek Aranha, our Chairpersons, Members and Vibrant Anns for their dedication and support. I would like to recognize the work of our Bulletin Editor, PP Sanjay Kher for his efforts, bringing out Quality Bulletins, week after week. I would also like to recognize the efforts of Rtn NP Bakshi, for providing good weekly meeting programs and also conducting meaningful Service Projects in the midst of Covid restrictions, in the Medical area; and also helping our mem- bers get vaccinated. A word of appreciation for Rtn Kapil Desai, for arranging Fund Raising through Venkys, which ensures we are empowered to execute meaningful Service Projects - Thank You Kapil. My Best Wishes and My assured support to Bharat Haladi and his Team for the coming Rotary Year, 2021 - 2022.

Regards Dipak Thacker IN MEMORIAM: Rtn Deepak Londhe, President of Rotary Club of Poona [2020-21]

Quem di diligunt adolescens moritur, it is said of a devoted Catholic in Rome. There cannot be a more defining dictum in the aftermath of the sad passing away of Deepak Londhe, who joined the Y.M.C.A in the eighties, some four decades back and retired as its General Secretary in 2020. He was felicitated by the All India YMCA General Secretaries Association and praised for his duty to the office which he so well adorned.

By education and training he was a social worker and he gave his undivided attention to the needs of the poor and needy persons in society. His service mindedness was taken note of by Joel Delvis, past governor and member of the Rotary Club of Poona and wholeheartedly endorsed by PP. Vivek Aranha. PP Vivek who later served as governor, proposed Deepak’s name to the membership Committee. Deepak became a Rotarian on 29 November 2010. His wife Sandhya, a teacher by profession was by his side at the induction ceremony at which he was his modest self - humble and yet confident, sincere and diligent.

Deepak rose in the Rotary Club of Poona working his way through Chairmanships of committees, as a worthy officer of the Club and finally as committed Director of Service Avenues. He was the unanimous choice of the Nominating Committee to serve as Club’s President in the Rotary Year 2020-21. It did not disappoint or deter him to assume the Chair in a depressing Covid atmosphere and the ceremony of installation was conducted on Zoom whereby he assumed, formally, the charge of one of the oldest and most prestigious Rotary Clubs in Western India.

He always took along with him the Board of Directors into confidence, received suggestions and advise from Chairpersons of all the committees and always gave a patient listening to the complaints and criticisms of members. He kept his composure at all times and kept working on the field, remaining present at all the service projects, always encouraging Chairpersons and Directors by his presence. He was a good orator who delivered simple but effective messages to the beneficiaries in Marathi as well as in Hindi, touching their hearts at all times.

Somewhere down the passage of service, the devastating covid-19 infection was transmitted to him, although he took care to wear the mask always. Perhaps it was not possible to maintain a safe distance from the needy persons he served as these persons had but one wish, to see him at closer hand, to observe the image of God in a humble being from near. Feeling their noble emotions, he allowed them this privilege. Covid -19 slowly got the better of him and he was admitted to Inamdar Hospital where the creepy progression of the disease called for drugs and oxygen in succession. These efforts were of no avail. He passed away on 21 April 2021, mourned by every person who had any opportunity of being closely acquainted with this gem among Rotarians. In Pune they say in Marathi - “Devala jo avadto, tyala to adhi neto”. It means exactly what they say in Latin, in Rome. WHOM THE GODS LOVE, GOES YOUNG! May his soul rest in eternal Peace and Tranquility ! - Contributed by PP Rtn Sanjay Kher

We witnessed a beautiful bouquet of talent of our Rotarians & R/Anns on 24 June 2021. It was attended by 80 members & guests. The programme started with National Anthem sung by Anns; beautifully assembled by our tech expert Viraag (grandson of Jayashree). This national anthem will be remembered for a very long time.

The flowers of this bouquet were woven by Jayashree & Archana and technically flavoured and decorated by PE Rtn Col Bharat Haladi, under watchful eyes of the first lady Rtn Aarti.

Pushpa danced rhythmically to set the mood for the evening. There were hilarious poems by CD Agarwal, Renu, Aruna and a song by Turan. Both the songs in the programme – Parody and pandemic lavani were written by Jayashree and sung by Vaiju & Sunanda beautifully.

Tasneem & Sweety proved that a wife is always smarter. So, Faizy & Narinder, think before you compete with wives! Shashi & Madhura exhibited their unique cooking skills.
