This book provides a great overview of the Flintlock Musket's development and use of the from its origins with the first Matchlock weapons through the peak of flintlock use in the early 19th Century. One weakness with this work, though, is its very British focus. While engagements like the American Civil War are mentioned, the vast majority of employment examples are drawn from the United Kingdom's Military History. This is a minor weakness at best since Britain was a world power The Flintlock Musket: Brown BESS and Charleville 1715- 1865 this This book provides a great overview of the Flintlock Musket's development and use of the from its origins with the first Matchlock weapons through the peak of flintlock use in the The Flintlock Musket: Brown BESS and Charleville 1715-1865 19th Century. This is a minor weakness at best since Britain was a world power throughout this period, but still worth mentioning. Where this book excels, though, is in its discussion of the technical and tactical developments which led to the Flintlock Musket's development. This includes discussion of the musket's doctrinal and practical employment which was laid out in a concise yet highly understandable manner. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in military rifles, the development of military tactics, 17th through 19th Century Military History, or a specific conflict s where Flintlock Muskets were employed. Jun 13, Declan Waters rated it really liked it Shelves: non-fiction. This book from Osprey looks at the history, the background and the impact of the Flintlock musket from it's start around the 30 years war and English Civil Wars through the Napoleonic Wars, and American Civil War. With detailed drawings of the workings of the flintlock and explanations of the engineering behind this, the detail definitely means this is for people wanting to learn more about the iconic weapon and definitely not for the casual reader. Aug 15, Sean Chick rated it it was amazing. Good book on the weapon and its overall development, with an emphasis on French and British experiences. Reid does a good job summarizing the rather expansive and at times contradictory literature.
