Women’s Crew / 14th 1 The men’s crew put together an outstanding season in 2012, claiming both the Ivy League Championship Fencing / 13th and EARC Sprints title before advancing to the IRA Men’s Soccer / 17th National Championship. The Bears would go on to

2 After winning the NCAA title in 2011, the Brown Men’s Squash / 16th women’s crew made its 16th straight NCAA Division I 3 Women’s Skiing / 2nd USCSA Championship appearance, having qualified for every National Championship NCAA Championship event since its inception. 4 After winning its 20th Ivy League Championship, the Brown men’s soccer team earned an At-Large berth into the NCAA Tournament and advanced to 4 the NCAA Sweet 16 for the second straight season. The Bears defeated #25 Fairfield,3-2 , on Stevenson Field in the first round and headed to Queens, N.Y. to defeat #11 St. John’s, 1-0. The Bears eventually fell to Elite Eight qualifier, St. Mary’s (CA),3-2 , at Stevenson Field. 1

1 Tommy Glenn ’14 represented men’s swimming at the 2012 NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship, earning All-America Honorable Mention honors in the 200 butterfly.

2 Women’s crew captain Allison Courtin ’12 earned CRCA First Team All-American honors after leading Brown to its 16th-straight NCAA appearance.

3 Allison Kagawa ’12, who started all 66 games of her career, was named a Third Team NSCAA Regional All-American, becoming the Bears’ first Regional All-American since Jill Mansfield 07’ and Kathryn Moos ’07 in 2006.

4 Dan Lowry ’12 finished 11th in the5,000 -meter run at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and was 28th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships to earn All-American status in both sports.

1 Dave Foxen ’12 won the 174-pound division at the EIWA Championship to advance to the 2012 NCAA Championship in St. Louis. Foxen became the first unseeded wrestler to win his weight class in the EIWA since 1963.

2 Olivia Mickle ’13 competed in the 10,000-meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Drake University.

3 Ophir Bernstein ’15 earned a berth in the NCAA Championship after posting 27 victories on the mat in his first season for the Bears.

4 Barrett Weiss ’15 made the NCAA Championship in his rookie season, finishing24 th in the country in the men’s foil. The Bears were represented in every weapon at the championship.

5 Cory Abbe ’13 qualified to the2012 NCAA Championships in the women’s foil and placed 21st overall in the nation. Brown sent three women and three men to the tournament. 6

1 Svetozar Stefanovic ’13, an ACWPC Honorable Mention All-American, was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division Player of the Year for the third consecutive season.

2 Women’s soccer standout Eliza Marshall ’13 was Brown’s RIAIAW Distinguished Student-Athlete of the Year. Based upon athletic excellence, academic success, and leadership qualities, Marshall was one of nine honorees from across the state.

3 Shortstop Stephanie Thompson ’13 was named the Ivy League Co-Player of the Year after ending her season with

3 a .477 batting average which ranked second in the nation.

4 Assistant captain Bobby Farnham ’12 won the Hockey Commissioners’ Association Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award. The award was established in honor of former Army hockey player Derek Hines, who was a “consummate team player and team builder” and recognizes a current NCAA hockey player who exhibits Hines’ character, spirit and leadership.

5 Alex Tounkara-Kone ’12 was a two-time first team All-Ivy wide receiver, who signed a free agent contract with the Buffalo Bills. 9

10 1 David Foxen ’12 became the first unseeded EIWA Achievements wrestler to win his weight class since 1963. Foxen upset the number two seed from Lehigh at 174 pounds to advance to the NCAA Championship.

2 Men’s ice hockey erased an early 2-0 deficit, 2 scoring five unanswered goals, to earn a5-2 win over in the 26th Annual Mayor’s Cup battle at PC’s Schneider Arena.

3 The Brown women’s ice hockey team enjoyed a resurgent season, reclaiming the Mayor’s Cup by defeating Providence College on its home ice, 2-1. It was first-year coach Amy Bourbeau’s first trip back to her alma mater as a head coach.

4 Brown equestrian capped its impressive season with an outstanding performance at the 2012 3 Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Nationals, out-scoring 15 other teams to finish third overall in the country.

Dan Lowry ‘12 Kia Mosenthal ‘12 Dan Lowry ’12, an All-American in both cross country Senior skiing captain Kia Mosenthal capped off her and track & field, is recognized as one of the top collegiate career by winning the USCSA Individual distance runners to come through . Slalom National Championship as the first American- Named Brown’s Male Athlete of the Year, Lowry born skier to win the event at the USCSA Nationals finished 11th in the 5,000-meter run at the 2012 NCAA in over 20 years. The new web site was officially launched on June28, 2012.

Mike Goldberger

16 Mike Goldberger came to Brown 38 years ago in Goldie was first brought to the Brown campus by 1973 as an assistant varsity football coach. Along football coach John Anderson, who had coached the way, he ascended throughout the University Goldberger as a football player and team captain at to a myriad of positions, including Director of Middlebury College. Goldberger later served as head Admissions and Director of Athletics. Goldie, coach of freshman football, as assistant baseball coach, as he is affectionately known, retired as Brown’s facilities director, and assistant athletic director, and Athletic Director at the completion of the 2011- became the athletic department’s liaison with the 2012 academic year. Admission Office as an associate director in1985 and became director in 1995. He assumed the duties of director of athletics at Brown on July 1, 2005.

Under Goldberger’s leadership, Brown’s athletic department grew and become better integrated with the University’s academic and extra-curricular life. Brown student-athletes have been recognized for their academic performance, including a No. 2 national ranking by the Academic Performance Report in each of the last two years.

Brown teams earned 12 Ivy League titles and 14 NCAA tournament appearances – most recently with back- to-back “Sweet 16” appearances by the men’s soccer team. The women’s crew won NCAA Division I Rowing Championships in 2007, 2008, and 2011, and the Brown football team won Ivy League championships in 2005 and 2008.

Among the many memorable moments/accomplishments in Goldie’s seven year tenure as Athletic Director:

/ Introducing Video Streaming to Brown Athletics – Over 100 Athletic events are video streamed over the internet each year, allowing parents, alumni and fans to watch Brown athletic events live anywhere in the world.

/ Accompanying the women’s crew to the White House to be honored as national Champions, meeting the President of the United States, George W. Bush, and listening to “Ever True To Brown” being played by the United States Marine Corps band while sitting on the South Lawn.

20 Academic Achievement

Brown student-athletes excelled in the classroom at an unprecedented level and, for the second straight year, Brown Athletics ranked 2 second in the nation out of 335 NCAA Division I schools in the NCAA APR. CoSIDA honored 15 Brown student-athletes with Academic All-District honors, while three Brown student- athletes were named CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-Americans. In addition, 20 of Brown’s teams were honored by the NCAA with Public Recognition Awards: baseball, football, men’s basketball, women’s fencing, men’s golf, women’s golf, women’s gymnastics, men’s ice hockey, women’s ice hockey, women’s lacrosse, women’s rowing, women’s skiing, softball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s swimming, women’s swimming, men’s outdoor track, volleyball, and women’s water polo. 1 The field hockey team posted the nation’s Team academic success fifth best GPA among all NCAA Division I field hockey teams. 2 Brown offers over 64 physical education courses in the areas of Aerobics & Fitness, Martial Arts & Self- Defense, Dance, Leisure Sports and Yoga. Physical education courses average over 2,700 participants per year, while intramural sports program consists of 25 offerings in a variety of team, dual, individual and special event programs to over 4,100 registered participants within the Brown community. Brown’s 18 Club Sports teams service over 400 student athletes, striving to provide an organized, structured and competitive environment for students interested in leading club sports at Brown University.

Under Head Coach Phil Estes, Brown football became a leader in / Relay for Life Rhode Island for providing support to the Be the Match / Fox Point Boys and Girls Club registry, organizing campus drives that have added over / Pediatric Brain Cancer Research 600 new registry members in the last three years. / Team Impact One of those donors was Brown junior defensive back Matthew Shannon. / Invisible Children Foundation Shannon got the call in his dorm room a week before / RI Adaptive Lacrosse finals that he was a perfect genetic match for a patient 29 / Thomas E. Smith Fight To Cure Paralysis Foundation who desperately needed a bone marrow transplant. The odds of such a match are about 80,000 to 1.

He immediately agreed to a process of endless interviews and medical testing. Less than a month later, Matt boarded a plane with his mother to fly from Cleveland, 3 OH to Georgetown Medical Center in Washington D.C. to undergo the procedure on May 31, 2012 that could end up saving someone’s life. With the support of his Head Coach, Phil Estes, the entire Brown Bear coaching staff, his teammates, family and friends, Matt prepared himself for an experience that, unfortunately, too few are able share in.

“The important thing to remember is, more and more people are getting diseases like cancer and leukemia every day, which means we need more and more donors to make a difference, to save their lives,” Matt explains. “That 4 is why when you have the chance to change someone’s life, you need to step up to the plate.”

“All of us at Brown are very proud of Matt,” said Estes. “He has a lot of courage to do this and has the opportunity to save a life. Matt wants this to be a success for the patient, and is extremely concerned for the patient’s future health. He’s doing something that’s very special.”

Brown Athletic Department hosted its fourth annual Senior Celebration and Awards Banquet at Andrew Dining Hall on 2 Friday, May 18, 2012. Over 170 student athletes representing Brown’s 37 intercollegiate sports, along with coaches and distinguished guests, were in attendance at the banquet to celebrate an exceptional year of success on the playing field, in the classroom and in the community. Also, the Brown Athletic Department gave out Appreciation Awards annually to two individuals, one inside the university community and one outside, who have gone beyond and above their call of duty in support of Brown Athletics.
