Welcome to our 2021 CO-ALTA Salers Cattle Sale.
I feel I have come a long way in breeding excellence from where I started 32 years ago. It has been a wonderful stretch in not just developing my herd, but in meeting so many of you who have supported us and become great friends to my wife and me. We are thankful to all of you who have been on this journey with us.
I have often been asked what I’m looking for in developing a herd. Quite simple my priorities are calving ease, birth weights, quiet dispositions, longevity, and tight udders. I desire to provide cattle that reduce labour and increase profits, something we all want. As a result, the reputation for our bulls is that they fit well with the breeding programs of both commercial and purebred herds.
For example, we’ve used 10-year-old, Y-PER 6Y on heifers for the last four years. This is the second year that all calves have been born unassisted. Not only are you getting easy calving offspring but your getting longevity in the genetics that this bull passes on.
In past years I’ve used AI programs with semen from some of the finest bulls available and embryos from prov- en cows. In an effort to continually boost and bring diversity to our herd, I’ve bought bulls from some of the best breeders in Canada including PW Stock Farm, Sky West Salers, GIT Performance Salers and Sweetland Super Six Salers, knowing there are many other top quality breeders out there.
As I enter my 32nd year, it is the first time that I did not keep replacement heifers to replenish the herd. It is the beginning of downsizing. I’m not stopping but rather facilitating my wife and my age and health. Its hard to let go but in so doing it has opened the door for some new breeders to the Salers Association of Canada, that being D Bar V Farms, Victor and Dorothy Lethbridge from Rolling Hills, AB. THE SALERS CATTLE BREED
The breed pronounced ‘Sa-Lair’, originated in the Auvergne region of central France near the town of Salers. These cattle are considered one of the oldest in the world, with prehistoric cave paintings suggesting that a similar type of animal has been bred there for 7-10 thousand years.
Whether you are selling replacement cows, breeding bulls, or marketing steers to feedlots, the Salers breed provides maternal performance and carcass value that are worth noting.
Calving Ease and Structure – The slender shape of the Salers calf combined with the larger pelvic area of the Salers female combine to create an easy-calving experience. These traits create calf sur- vivability for both purebred and crossbred commercial cattle.
• FACT: The Montana State University measured 153 Salers, 175 Angus and 94 Hereford yearlings and found the average pelvic areas of the Salers to be 15 square centimetres greater than the Herefords and 10 square centimetres greater than the Angus. In a similar study, the Colorado State University measured more than 900 yearlings representing 17 breeds and again Salers had, larger pelvic areas than any of the other breeds examined. • FACT: Research conducted in France with 4864 lactations found Salers to have an average daily milk production of 11.1 litres over a 274-day lactation. By comparison, this same trial shows Charolais at 5.7 and Limousins at 4.9 litres per day. • FACT: Research of 59,000 cows of 28 breeds show Salers dams weaned the heaviest (200 day) calves of any breed.
