International Soccer Network 6/3/2014 The Crew are Coming to Akron International Soccer Network "Your Source for the Beautiful Game" Home About Us The Crew are Coming to Akron Search September 28, 2011 was a historic milestone for the University of Akron’s FirstEnergy Categories StadiumCub Cadet Field as a record crowd of 5,819 turned out to watch the Zips take on The Ohio State University in an epic men’s soccer match. Similar crowds of 5,241 AFC Cleveland (42) (vs. Cleveland State) and 4,301 (vs. New Mexico) also took place in 2011. AFC Rushden & Diamonds (9) Those records are likely to be shattered when the Columbus Crew comes to town to APS/ASL (7) play their U.S. Open Cup match on June 17th. The Crew will bring their supporters up from Columbus and all around Ohio, but so will their opponent, Indy Eleven. Cincinnati Dutch Lions (9) The Indianapolis side are off to a strong start in their NASL existence, the most College Soccer (69) impressive being the sellout crowds at Carroll Stadium. Columbus Crew (109) The Crew shouldn’t view this match as a road trip. This is friendly territory so to CONCACAF (13) speak. Dan Gaspar (10) Akron and the rest of NE Ohio is a Dayton Dutch Lions (33) soccer hotbed, home to one of the most successful college soccer English Football (98) programs in the entire country in European Soccer (9) the University of Akron. Caleb Football in India (8) Porter and now Jared Embick are Growing the Game (18) known for churning out pro soccer players at a prolific rate, from Crew Guinness International Champions Cup (3) teammates Wil Trapp and Chad Barson to Seattle Sounders Photo Credit: Brent Durken/ISNSoccer.com High School Soccer (6) defender DeAndre Yedlin (and a lot ISN (15) more in between). ISN Stars of Coaching Presented by NE Ohio is also home to a tremendous amount of Crew supporters from Canton to Korrio (25) Cleveland to Youngstown and everything in between. This match is an exercise in Jared Montz (20) growing the Crew brand, but also growing the game in a World Cup year. Living the Awesome Soccer Dream (2) The region has been a great place recently to find great players. Just ask the Crew, MLS (315) who have found some gems in local players like Josh Williams (Copley), Ben Speas (Stow), and Brad Stuver (Cleveland). The Portland Timbers have had similar success NASL (26) http://internationalsoccernetwork.com/blog/?p=8405 1/3 6/3/2014 The Crew are Coming to Akron in the area, landing Darlington Nagbe (Lakewood), Michael Nanchoff (North Royalton), New York Cosmos (25) and Ben Zemanski (Akron). NPSL (143) This game is something that is exciting for everyone, even for a coach who has won NSCAA Convention (10) some serious hardware in his career. PASL (28) “The U.S. Open Cup has been around Pelé Sports Fan Ambassadors (16) for 100 years and is an important tournament in the landscape of U.S. Reviews (144) Soccer,” Embick stated. “It is a Rugby (6) tremendous honor to host the Columbus Samurai Sportswear Soccer Spotlight Crew in an Open Cup match and a (5) tribute to our school and soccer TPSL (16) program. We have a lot of passionate soccer fans in Northeast Ohio and I feel University of Akron Men's Soccer (42) this will go a long way towards University of Akron Women's Soccer connecting the people of Northeast Ohio (28) to The Crew and helping them grow their University of Mount Union Men's brand. But more importantly, Columbus Soccer (25) Photo Credit: The University of Akron has a tremendous team that plays University of Mount Union Women's attractive soccer and I am happy our Soccer (18) fans will have the opportunity to watch them play on our home field.” USL PRO (7) For a player like Barson, it represents a return to where it all started. USL WLeague (8) “At Akron, the fans are great. It’s electric; it’s a very live atmosphere. Obviously I’m USL2 (43) very excited; Akron is very near and dear to me. I played there for four years. It’s one USMNT (69) of the best fields around, so we’ll definitely be able to play our style of soccer. To be USSF DII (50) able to go up there, see old friends and play in front of the community again will be great.” USWNT (20) Speas is excited about the opportunity as well. Welsh Football (6) World Cup (53) “It’s exciting. All my family lives 10 minutes away from there and that’s where I went to college, so I think it’s great. It’ll be a great atmosphere. Students probably won’t be WPS (29) there because it’s in the summer, but there are still a lot of soccer fans up there that will WPSL (91) support the Crew. I’ll have a bunch of people there supporting the Crew and supporting Youth Soccer (22) me.” Tickets for this great match will be made available sometime this week.
