Keratoplasty (Corneal transplant) was performed on her left eye & Sajida now has functioning vision.

Not so long ago, Khalil who in desperation had tried to commit h pesuicide is now peacefully earning for the family and is grateful to the Trust for giving the beautiful gift of sight to his daughter. Tragically the % suffering of 80 of them is needless as they suffer from conditions which can be prevented or cured.

However most of them live around the poverty line and simply cannot afford the Visio n treatment. for ompassion The choice for them is stark: Go blind c or Starve Sana Abandoned by her parents Visio n when she was 22 days old and brought up by her old grandmother, Sana for suffered from Corneal disease which remained untreated as they just did not have the money.

We reached a major milestone in June 2013 having treated 25 million patients since we began this journey 28 years ago. 25 million lives saved from darkness and despair. 25 million who regained their self respect and became independent income generating individuals. But with 2/3rds of our people living below the poverty line, the growth in population and people living longer the number of blind and impaired vision persons keeps growing. Despite the prevalence of blindness halving in the last 20 odd years, an achievement in which we had a significant role, there are still 18.7 million blind and impaired vision people. With Government spending less than 1 percent of the GDP on health care the burden falls on us in the area of eye care as we are the major provider in the country with more than a third of all eye patients visiting our hospitals/clinics for free treatment.

This places an intolerable load on our hospitals which we had to expand to cope with the huge influx of patients: 6 hospitals have been expanded and 4 new ones added to the network in the last 5 years. cExpansion of 3 additional hospitals is underway and another new one in Odigram in Swat will open in October 2013. There is however still a need for 4 additional hospitals: a second one in Lahore, new ones in Rahimyar Khan, Dadu & Bannu. But our current level of Donation/Zakat does not permit us to embark on any expansion as we are finding it difficult to fund our existing free services. Whilst our Zakat collections are growing Donations especially from Corporates and International NGOs (INGOs) are declining. Corporates especially multinationals require that their donations must be aligned with their business objectives. They along with INGO »s also want that the NGO »s they support must have a revenue stream independent of donations/Zakat so as to be sustainable.

We are estimating a shortfall of Rs 103 million: 34 million on Operating Expenditure and 67 million on Capital Expenditure in the financial year 2013/14. Whilst we are gearing up our fundraising efforts we are also looking at ways to develop an independent income stream by treating those patients who could afford to pay the cost of surgery without it impacting on the quality and volume of our free services to those living around the poverty line
