SEPTEMBER 19, 2021 • THE TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WIS 2:12, 17-20; PS 54:3-4, 5, 6, 8; JAS 3:16-4:3; MK 9:30-37

Our readings today bring to light the daily struggle between good and evil and how we can combat this struggle through gratitude.

In our Gospel, we see an example of how surrendering to our passions negatively affects us. Jesus was with His disciples when they began to argue amongst themselves as to who was the greatest in the group.

If we look at our own lives, we might find many instances where we fall into the same tendencies — we constantly compare ourselves to others, out of pride we feel the need to point out another’s faults or choose to fight back in an argument. We know we should act one way but choose another.

When Jesus hears what the apostles are discussing, He has them focus on a child. “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me.”

If we reflect on the moment someone receives a child, oftentimes their hearts are overwhelmed with joy and gratitude for this . There is no jealousy or anger, just thanksgiving, and appreciation.

The apostles are busy bickering about who was the best. Their vision was clouded, and they could not even stop and be grateful for the gift to be so close to our Savior and that they were chosen to be His closest followers.

When we are caught in the raging war of jealousy, fighting, and pride, and begin to become enslaved to our passions we are ultimately being ungrateful for what we have been given. We overlook the blessing God has given us and the and talents He has entrusted to us.

Today, let us recall that we have an infinitely loving God who cares deeply for us. Consider all that He has blessed you with, and how you can use those blessings for His glory.

Dear Cathedral Family,

It was wonderful to meet last Saturday morning with so many of our people who came out to participate in the morning of reflection for Liturgical Ministers. After mass and continental breakfast we reflected on one of the most lively resurrection accounts; the Lord revealing himself to the two discouraged disciples on their way from Jerusalem to Emmaus. There is power in reflecting on the Word of God. Although most of us know well the story— we reflected on it from the perspective that we can all get discouraged and begin “to walk away from Jerusalem.” Jerusalem was the center of spiritual power. Emmaus—just 7 miles away was the seat of a great military garrison. For the ancients it represented the “power of the world.” Isn’t it true that when we get weak because of some kind of trouble, trauma or set back---we can easily start out away from God---looking for a worldly solution.

Every time we come to Mass we are walking toward a “Spiritual” orientation to our life. Our presence at the Sunday Liturgy shapes and reshapes our thinking to the “mind of Christ.” May we have the courage to say yes to the Lord’s invitation to be “truly” present to Him when we come to Mass---and resist the temptation “to go through the mo- tions.”

We are formalizing our relationship with Fiat Ventures. They will now begin to actively prepare a Youth Minister to be missioned here at the Cathedral in the coming weeks. Please pray for a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon our young people that their hearts may be awakened and ready to be set fire by the newly forming Youth Ministry.

I have been working to have the final version of the description, qualifications, expectations formulated which represents the scope for the Director of Sacred Music for the Cathedral as well as the Diocesan component. We will now form the search committee and formally begin the process of surfacing talent to be reviewed by the committee. This too needs your prayers. We pray for an excellent musician---who can build upon the great musical legacy of Thom Delessio, and someone who is filled with living faith and the heart of a servant leader. I will update you as the process unfolds.

In the Gospel this week end the Lord tells us to become like little children---that is to have the trust and confidence that God is our Father---He sees and attends to all of our needs. Let us trust that---and in the this Year of St. Joseph may more men look to the foster father of Jesus to see what a true man looks like---willing to take responsibility, serve and love others. In this way more people will come to know in human form what the Fatherhood of God really means in human flesh---and that will help us to trust in our goodness---that God the Father sees in us—and we will entrust ourselves to Him.

We all have many duties, responsibilities and things to get done---but most important we must keep the Jesus as Lord of each day. Staying close to His heart and asking for His help---we will then be alert and ready to assist each other.

Have a blessed Week! In Jesus, Father Christy Very Rev. Fr. Timothy Christy, VG
