Dear Reader, dear Colleagues,

2011 is the year of the 33rd ITI World Congress. It is planned to take place in , Province of Fujian, – from 19 to 25 September.

The ITI World Congress is the largest gathering for the performing arts practitioners of the International Theatre Institute ITI. The Executive Council and the General Secretariat of ITI are already fully involved in the planning and preparation, so that this key forum can mark a new era for the International Theatre Institute. For the first time the Congress will have three main parts: artistic presentations, workshops for artistic training and arts management and of course – the statutory part.

In mid January 2011 there will be a new website that will gradually provide all information needed regarding the Congress. Those who are interested in the 33rd ITI World Congress will be able to go to the website for the latest developments: www.iti-congress.org

I am also confident that the New Year will bring a lot of good news and exciting new collaborations for the network. Not only the Congress, but also new websites with a brand new design, renewed strength for ITI Centres and Regional Councils through workshops for capacity-building, a new additional head office for ITI in Fujairah (UAE), and as you can see: a new ITI logo – symbolizing the vitality and dynamism of the organization – designed by ITI Executive Council member Il Soo Shin, Republic of Korea.

I would also like to express my gratitude to all who assisted the International Theatre Institute and the General Secretariat in the past year and made these developments possible. May the New Year bring you all much new energy and creative inspiration!

Best wishes! Tobias Biancone, Secretary General International Theatre Institute ITI 3 Editorial

33 Bibi Gessner in Moscow In Memoriam

In Memoriam / In Memoriam

SwissTHEATRE, Bibi Gessner (1925-2010) Swiss Centre ITI People who have been with ITI a bit longer will remember her very well: Friedel Gessner Bischof, short Bibi Gessner. From my early days in ITI I enjoyed a strong and positive friendship with her. For me she was an extraordinary lady. And she was extraordinary in every sense! Born in a village near Zurich, she lived the life of “une grande dame”. Not only the clothes she was wore were those of a great lady, her way of life and her behavior showed it as well. And definitely she always revealed greatness, ex. when she was in a meeting and everybody tried to be polite and tried not to tell the obvious, Bibi did – she was very outspoken and charming. If someone said something stupid, she didn’t hide her reaction. This attitude made me laugh many times. I remember a general assembly of the Swiss ITI Centre in my home town Bern. The president was about to say something that was probably not a hundred percent true, and Bibi being the General Secretary of the Swiss ITI was sitting next to him, interfered and said openly that this was “balderdash”. I also respected her ability to evaluate people. When she judged somebody as “ä fautsche füfzger” (Swiss dialect, a wrong 50 cent coin, meaning somebody who you cannot be trusted because he seems to be your friend and behind your back he is telling lies about you to others.) I was sure to find out soon enough that her assessment was correct. 34 In Memoriam In Her bravery was extraordinary. When she was 60 years old, meaning around 1985, she decided to travel to China. That might not be astonishing but what was extraordinary is that she traveled alone, without being able to speak a word of Chinese. Bibi Gessner in Moscow

Her history with theatre was special. A lady born in that village was not supposed to work in theatre. That is why she learned to type, to use stenography and became a skilled office worker. She went to London to work in the administration of the department store Selfridges and was about to go to New York for an employment in the department store Macy’s when she was asked to work in the most prestigious theatre in Zurich, the Schauspielhaus (house of drama). Soon she advanced to become the assistant of the director and was shaking hands with world known actors like Therese Giese, Gustav Knuth and Will Quadflieg as well as the Swiss playwrights Max Frisch and Friedrich Dürrenmatt. After an event with Jean-Louis Barrault, the French actor and director was afraid for Bibi to walk home alone and guided her – like a gentlemen – to the house where she was living. In 1966 she followed her husband, Nicolas Gessner, a film director, to Paris, and started to work with him for on films such as Un milliard dans un billard, La blonde de Pékin, The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane, etc. At that time she met cinema stars like Jean Seberg, Jodie Foster, Mireille Darc, Yves Montant, Antony Perkins, Edward G. Robinson, Orson Welles, Charles Bronson and many others. Bibi reminisced: “The encounter with these personalities was very interesting. 35 Bibi Gessner in Not because it impressed me that one of this in front of me Moscow was this or that person, but because they were extraordinary people, real personalities.”

After her divorce she came back to Zurich and worked together In Memoriam with Felix Rellstab for the establishment of new theatre pedagogy in Zurich and then she helped him to reestablish the Swiss Centre of ITI. She enjoyed the congresses and was an active member of the Communication Committee. After her retirement as the General Secretary of the Swiss ITI she became an honorary member of that organization. In 2007, at the age of 82, she was for the first time on stage as an actor In Madrid, during and played in the Rimini Protokoll version of “The Visit of the the ITI World Old Lady” by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, in the Schauspielhaus in Congress with the Zürich. A year later she attended the 32nd ITI World Congress Secretary General in Madrid.

I enjoyed her friendship very much. She kept herself young by being interested in life and the world. She was always keen on knowing what was going on in ITI, and she was very supportive of my election as Secretary General of ITI in 2008. I attended her resplendent birthday party in the Opera in Zurich, while she came to my celebrations and book premieres. I will always remember her as an outspoken, strong and charming lady. And as a real friend!
