AMPL Super Smash Bros Brawl Tournament Rules

 Players may pick any character. Players may also switch characters between matches.  All items will be turned off for the entire tournament.  There will be three available stages for the tournament. The stage will be randomly selected for each match. Available stages: Battlefield, Final Destination, and Smashville.  There will be three qualifying rounds. Qualifying rounds will be 4 player matches. Match time limit will be 2 to 5 minutes and 3 stock lives. Time will depend on number of participants to play that day. Players will go into the game’s sudden death matches if tied at the end of a match.  During qualifying rounds, players will earn points based on how they finish (40 for 1st place, 30 for 2nd place, etc). At the end of the 3 qualifying rounds, players with the top 16 scores will advance to the elimination rounds. If we are running behind, only the top 8 players will advance and depending on participation.  If multiple players are tied at the end of the qualification rounds, a tiebreaker match will be held. Tiebreaker matches will follow the same rules as the qualifying round matches.  Final rounds will be 2 player versus matches, seeded single bracket elimination. Each match will be 8 minutes with 3 stock lives. Seeding will be done based on qualifying round scores.  The scorekeeper will determine when a match begins.  When a match ends, players must leave the score screen up for the scorekeeper to record the results. Passing this screen will invalidate the match.  Tournament organizers have the final say in all decisions.

All games in the tournament will be:

 3 stock  2-5 minutes long  If time runs out, the winner is determined by stock, and then by percentage.  If both stock and percentage are identical, or a game ends with both players being KO'd simultaneously, then a tiebreaker is played. A tiebreaker is a 1 stock, 3 minute match with the same characters and the same stage.  In the early stages of the tournament, the top two finishers in four-person matches will advance. In some of the later stages, just the winner will advance. Losing players will be relegated to the B side of the tournament. If they lose on the B side, they are out of the tournament. But they can still stay and watch!  Items are turned to low. o All items will be on except: Starman, Fan, Golden Hammer, Party Ball, Assist Trophy, Bumper, Cracker Launcher, Hothead.  Stages will be chosen randomly. o Banned Stages include: 75m, Rumble Falls, Mushroomy Kingdom, Big Blue, Flat Zone 2, Corneria, Green Hill Zone, Hanenbow, Bros., New Pork City, Port Town Aero Drive, Spear Pillar, Summit, Temple, Inc. o The following stages can only be played if all players agree on it: ’s Island, Shadow Moses Island, Onett.

Technical details:

 Controller ports are determined by Rock-Paper-Scissors if there is a dispute.  All people are responsible for their own control scheme/name tag and must make sure it is set before the match begins. Both players must agree to restart a match on account of a controller problem.  Players may either select any character -- all are available -- or allow the computer to select one at random for them. o When a player advances, whether a character was one they chose or a random selection, they must continue to use that character. They cannot continue making random selections. (The only exception is Meta Knight is a banned character. Not allowed.) o When a player loses, they can opt to change their character for their next match. o If a player selects Meta Knight, he is given a 10% handicap. o If a player chooses a random character and gets Meta Knight he will be allowed to play without a handicap, but must choose a random character again if he advances.  Stalling is banned. Stalling is defined as any action that deliberately avoids all conflict as to make the game unplayable. o Running from an opponent to get to a better position is not considered stalling, but using chain grabs infinitely against a wall beyond 300% or using Sonic's Homing Attack repeatedly underneath the stage is.  Some interactions (for example, interrupting a throw with a wind attack) can cause one character to become frozen until being hit. If this happens, the free character is expected to capitalize on this in a timely manner; a failure to do so is considered stalling.  Any action that prevents the game from continuing results in a forfeiture of the match for the offender.  Infinites are defined as a sequence of moves performed against an opponent which, once initiated upon said opponent, may be continued indefinitely regardless of the opponent's actions. These are allowed, but must be stopped before the opponent hits 300%.
