2007-2008 OWHA Annual Report -8- HOCKEY DEVELOPMENT CENTRE FOR ONTARIO

HDCO PENALTY FREE SWEEPSTAKES Congratulations to all OWHA teams who entered the 2008 Penalty Free Sweepstakes. To qualify, teams must have played a penalty free game between December 1, 2007-January 31, 2008. This year’s contest received a total of 6,708 entries. Since 1986 the Hockey Development Centre for Ontario program has attracted over close to 100,000 teams and over one million participants. The random draw was held on February 8th and OWHA winners were:

Team Division Prize Toronto Leaside Hollywood Gelato Atom Hitz Jerseys Kitchener Lady Rangers Atom Laser Quest Team Party London Devilettes Peewee Laser Quest Team Party Durham Lightning - OPG Peewee McDonald’s Great Taste Cards Toronto Leaside Drew Homewood Atom Pizza Pizza Team Party Caldwell Banker Durham Lightning – Bay Cycle Peewee Pizza Pizza Team Party Sport Waterloo Ravens Peewee Pizza Pizza Team Party Orillia Hawks Midget Pizza Pizza Team Party

Results indicate that during the past twenty years the program has operated, 62% of more than 124, 864 entries received have either won or tied their penalty free game – a statistic that demonstrates the importance of staying out of the penalty box.

The Tillsonburg Lightning Girls atom hockey team has played 17 regular season games, along with 2 exhibition games and 3 tournament games for a total of 22 games since the beginning of this season. They have had 1 single penalty (too many men on the ice) in a tournament. They are the only team in their division which is penalty free, as well, they are in first place. The girls play hard and show great sportsmanship in all of their games. Just wanted to pass this info…to show you this is a team that “Plays to Win and Plays Penalty Free!!! Lynda Poredos Team Manager

“HOCKEY PLAYERS AND TEAMS OF ALL AGES SHOULD PLAY BY THE RULES AND IN THE SPIRIT OF THE GAME. PLAY SAFE, HAVE RESPECT FOR YOUR OPPONENT AND ABOVE ALL ELSE, ENJOY YOUR TIME ON AND OFF THE ICE WITH YOUR TEAMMATES.” HDCO EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WAYNE DILLON

A Women’s Sledge Hockey Team was formed last season in hopes to eventually develop Women’s Sledge Hockey into an International Paralympics Sport. Presently sledge hockey is deemed a men’s only league by the International Paralympics Committee. The United States has also started a women’s team. It is hoped that other countries will follow. The goal is with continued interest and development, the International Paralympics Committee will consider allowing Women’s Sledge as a demo sport and ultimately a fully sanctioned Paralympics sport. It will take time to develop Women’s Sledge Hockey to a National Level. With continued player development in conjunction with exhibition games and public awareness, a Women’s Team should be ready to compete on the world stage as the sport develops into a sanctioned Paralympics sport. The first all female demo sledge hockey game occurred at the Ottawa Sledge Hockey Tournament on May 5, 2007 against the USA who are also working hard to develop women’s sledge hockey. The game was very well received and a very entertaining game. The ladies who participated in the event where very excited about continuing with a women’s team. As a result of this game the US team invited the women to visit them in New Jersey in August 2007 for one practice and two games. In preparation for New Jersey a two-hour practice was held in Cambridge in early August. The practice was well attended. The New Jersey team encompassed those players who chose to go at their own expense. This trip was a very good experience for the women who attended. Presently, there is a database of approximately 26 women whom meet the paralympic disability criteria. Able bodied players do not meet the criteria of the paralympic standards and will not be included on the team. However, able bodied players have been used to assist player development at on ice practices. The data base group consists of players aged 15 to 18 years, along with a mixture of older players. These women are from primarily Ontario with some from Quebec. At this point in time we have not accessed the west or east due to financial considerations. The opportunity to expand is present and the hope is to bring more female sledge players into the team by accessing the other provinces. There are also un-tapped waters here in Ontario as well The 2007/08 Season has been promising for future development with the invitation to attend the Men’s World Sledge Hockey Tournament in Marlborough, Mass April 4-6, 2008 for several demonstration games against the US Women’s team. This event provided international exposure for Women’s Sledge Hockey. Fundraising efforts supported this opportunity. Two camps were held in December 23, 2007 & February 23, 2008, in conjunction with the OWHA Provincial Championship. 2007-2008 OWHA Annual Report -11- The OWHA was pleased to provide support in providing ice for the February camp. Participants in the Provincial Championship were treated to an outstanding display of women’s sledge hockey and enjoyed the opportunity of meeting the players. The OWHA was pleased to provide sweaters and track pants for the team and also to collect donations to support the team. The new women's jerseys were an incredible hit with both the players and fans. They certainly added a touch of class and brought the girls together both physically and emotionally as a team. The OWHA, especially the Belleville Bearcats sincerely thank the women’s sledge hockey team for the loan of a wheel chair to transport an injured able-bodied player from the rink to a waiting car! Congratulations to the Canadian Women’s Sledge Hockey Team as they represented Canada with excellence and class. The team split the series with Team USA, winning the first game 2-1 and losing 3-0 in the second game. All participants enjoyed an unbelievable weekend! The opportunity to watch the Canadian Men's Gold Medal Win over Norway on Saturday night was an event most girls will never forget. The game was played with an incredible physical and emotional passion by both teams. It was an almost overwhelming experience to participate as a fan in a building full of people from all around the world cheering for their team of choice. Sincere congratulations to the team that is being co-managed by Keith and Sandy Metzger. Keith has been coaching the team, and Sandy has been team trainer. We welcome the team to the Ontario Women's Hockey Association.

The Ontario Womens Hockey Association is pleased to support the Canadian Women’s Sledge Hockey Team

The Quest for Gold Program will provide additional support to Ontario amateur athletes through direct financial support, access to high performance coaching and enhanced competitive opportunities and services for Ontario athletes. The overarching goal of the Quest for Gold Program is directly related to the Enhanced Excellence goals of both ACTIVE2010 and the Canadian Sport Policy – to improve the performance and number of Ontario athletes performing at the national and international level, thereby contributing to the improved performance of Canada at international competitions. The program has continued under the direction of the current Minister of Health Promotion, the Honourable Margaret R. Best. Quest For Gold Program
