Crossed Hearts Club Board Luncheon

On December 10th, we gathered at Seven Springs Mountain Resort for the Crossed Hearts Club Board Christmas Luncheon honoring Sister Diana N. Michael, WGM. The ‘Love Came Down at Christmas’ Luncheon was decorated beautifully. As the snow came down outside we listened to Christian Sesek sing Christmas Carols and other songs from the Sinatra Era. Michelle Burns did the introductions and we greeted guests with ringing a bell instead of clapping. Sister Diana spoke and thanked all that attended. “This time of year is when we think about love the most. It would be great if we loved without ceasing every day of the year,” Diana told the guest. Everyone who attended had a wonderful time. Pennsylvania Order of the Eastern Star From Your Editor...

Mari and I were treated to a very impressive flower and candle ceremony by the Grand Officers during the initiation of four new members. Sister Helen and I attended Installation of the 2016-2017 Officers, and extended congratulations and good wishes for the upcoming year. The next day we left for Salt Lake City, where Brother John Lay, Worthy Grand Warder, took 15 of the General Grand Chapter Officers and spouses on a tour of the magnificent Wasatch Mountains which offered breath taking views of the Salt Lake Basin, Heber Valley and the Park City silver mining areas. Utah is a small jurisdiction with only 18 Chapters and 845 members, but they make up for size with great enthusiasm. In the morning we were on the road again, to Guthrie, Oklahoma for their 108th Annual Session “The last Migration of the Hummingbirds.” There was a reception for General Grand Officers and Oklahoma’s Grand Officers. It was my honor to stand beside Sister Barbara Benton, PMWGM, in the receiving line. She and her husband, Tom, have been very special friends to Mari and me over the years, and it certainly was our pleasure to be with them for three days. Mari and I attended the business sessions, and despite the 90-degree weather (and no air conditioning in the Temple), we had a wonderful time with old friends and made many new ones. We loaded up the car on the 19th and drove to Albuquerque, New Mexico where we were warmly greeted by Sister Penny Tuszynski, WGM, and Brother Robert Sonnamaker, WGP, to their“Angels Among Us” Session. We attended their business sessions, Grand Representative Luncheon, and Past Grands Dinner. It was good to see PA’s Grand Representative of New Mexico, Sister Carol Ruffner, along with her sister and brother-in- law from New Jersey. In the morning during election of officers, Mari and I took a tour of the city on the ABQ trolley, after which we shopped in Old Town Albuquerque. We returned to the sessions in the afternoon, and went to the All Member Banquet at 6:00 PM, where Sister Helen and I gave brief farewell speeches thanking the members for their kindness, courtesies, and attention. On October 22nd we started the trip east to our home in Elizabethtown, where we arrived safe, and very weary, on the 25th. During the 35 days, not only did we attend six Grand Chapter Sessions, but also we drove 8,817 miles across this beautiful and grand country – truly America the Beautiful! We ended the month of October by attending the annual birthday banquet for Triangle Chapter #483, Region 10B at the Stewartstown Fire Hall. We are always happy to be able to attend events in our home region, and this was a fun day filled with good food and fellowship. Sisters and Brothers, it has been a wonderful year since my installation in Pittsburgh, and it has seemed to go by very quickly. It is my honor to serve you as your Most Worthy Grand Patron, and rest assured, I never forget to tell everyone that I am from Pennsylvania, and to “Keep Flying High for OES!” Grand Chapter News

Submitted by: Jeanne Hillegas, General Chairman for Tee of for Cancer

The first of 3 golf outings for TEE OFF FOR CANCER was the Western Section and it was held on August 28th at Carmichaels Golf Course in Carmichaels, PA. This outing was organized by Sister Carla Franks, Western Chairman and her committee. Three words to best describe this outing were, “hot, hot, hot!” Fifty-two golfers and twenty non-golfers braved the August heat to participate in the events. All teams were sent to their assigned holes at 8:55 and at 9:00 the shotgun blasted and the round began. All teams finished around 1:00 with the temperature at over 90 degrees plus. Our WGM even tried her hand at golf. In the first of three challenges arranged by our WGP, Sister Diana attempted to drive a golf ball off of Hole #!0 tee box. With a crowd of spectators watching, our WGM hit the ball off the tee and drove the ball out into the grassy course. All enjoyed a stuffed chicken breast lunch under the pavilion at the clubhouse. Prizes were awarded and the winning team at 10 under was Hanshaw and Fortney. Skill prizes were also presented and our WGP won the longest putt contest and I as awarded as well. All attending were glad to find some air conditioning for their ride home.

The second outing was the Central Section and it was held September 11 at Rich Valley Golf Course in Mechanicsburg. This outing was organized by Sister Carrie Lyter, Central Chairman and her committee. Along with this outing Carrie also held a Miniature Golf outing. There were 52 big golfers and eighty mini-golfers registered for the event. The shotgun start was at 1:30 for big golfers and then 1:45 for mini golfers. It was a perfect day for golfing with the temperatures in the low 80’s. The winning miniature golf team that day was Laurie and Jeff Miller and family. Our WGM also made another attempt at golf this day. Sister Diana completed the putting challenge that the WGP had arranged for her. Prizes were awarded and the winning team was the Lewis Family, Benton & Sarah Lewis and Britney & Christopher Kwolek. Coming in second was the WGP’s team. Several skill prizes were also awarded. There were also numerous baskets donated for this event. The winning tickers were drawn during the outing and the winners could claim their baskets after the round. No golfer left empty handed as Sister Carrie has a prize for each of them!

The third outing was the Eastern Section and it was held October 16th at the Laurel Mountain Golf Club in White Haven. Sister Kathy Whitney, Easter Chairman, and her . committee organized this event. It was a chilly morning requiring most golfers to start the day off with jackets and sweatshirts. The 47 golfers that were registered for the even had a 9:00 shogun start. At Hole #11 there was a pond full of fish (carp). Kathy sold bags of breadcrumbs for $1.00 to the golfers so they could feed the fish when they arrived at the hole. When the carp saw the golf carts pull up to the hole they swarmed to the side of the pond. It was clear then that 1 or 2 bags of breadcrumbs was not enough for the fish! The golfers finished their round around 1:30 and returned to the clubhouse for a steak dinner. Our WGM completed her third and final challenge, which was to chip the ball on the green. Prizes were awarded to the following: 1st place women’s team at 10 under was Beth Lunger, Kris Lunger, Pat Noble, and Merri Walter; 2nd place mixed team at 9 under was WGP, Bill Johnston , Tom Johnston, Jeanne and Russ Hillegass; and 3rd place men’s team at 5 under was Jim Whitney, Tom Roe, Mike Bloomer, and Michael Bloomer. Kathy also had numerous baskets donated for the event and these were awarded after dinner.

I’m so pleases that the efforts of Sister Carla, Carrie, and Kathy put forth in organizing these golf outings for TEE OFF FOR CANCER! I would also like to thank all the golfers and guests who attended these events. I know everyone will be pleased to hear at Grand Chapter in June 2017 the profits raised from these events.

If you ask three Regional Deputy Grand Matrons to rally members to organize a special meeting to promote Endless Love for the Order of the Eastern Star, you are overwhelmed with a jammed packed crowd of willing sisters and brothers who will guarantee the ceremony a success. On August 20, 2016, meeting at the Ramada Inn, Clarks Summit, Pa at eleven am everyone joined to enjoy a tasty luncheon. Sister Stepheny Rush, Laurel Chapter No. 67 supplied a yummy cake for dessert. The meeting began about one pm. Here it is only August, and our three Region Deputy Grand Matron’s were obliged to organize the biggest regional special meeting of the year. Members representing fourteen chapters, Regions 11A, B, & C, sprang into action. The Grand Family witnessed a flawless ritualistic opening star formation, courteous introductions of Grand Officers, exemplification of conferring of degrees, reciting renewal of obligation, presentations of gifts, special remarks, and an impressive closing ceremony. Irwin Chapter #400 Entertaining Grand Officers & Honoring Grand Electa

On December 9th, Irwin Chapter welcomed Grand Officers to Colton Hall for a Christmas Ball honoring Tammie S. Lasswell, Grand Electa. The guests were entertained by a DJ and a super sparkley photo booth with props. Carly Galley, DGM of Region 5A, did introductions in a light up gown dressed as a an angel. Sister Tammie gave all the grand officers honorary memberships. The grand officers played a game where we found out if they really know each other. They were asked a question and held up a heart with either Diana or Bill’s picture. They did a great job, although who drives faster caused a little disagreement. We still don’t know the answer to that question! Diana Michael, WGM, spoke about Tammie and how she exemplifies love and charity. Tammie gives 100% in everything she does and we appreciate everything she does. Irwin Chapter is very proud of her!

Ellwood City No. 212 is 100 Years Young Submitted by: Shirley Capo, GGCCM

Ellwood City Chapter No. 212, Region 3A, celebrated a milestone achievement on June 19, 2016. The chapter held a luncheon to commemorate their 100th birthday at Shakespeare’s Restaurant at the Olde Stonewall Golf Club. It was an elegant setting for this special occasion. Over 90 members and friends attended. Among the honored guests were Diana N. Michael, Worthy Grand Matron, and William D. Johnston, Worthy Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of Pennsylvania, and 9 of their Grand Officers. Shirley B. Capo, GGCCM, Thomas R. Mason, PGP, and Joan Evans, DGM also attended the festivities. One of the highlights of the afternoon was the presentation of a Grand Representative Commission to Worthy Matron, Charmaine A. Meehan. Surprised by the honor, Charmaine was delighted with her appointment to the state of Maine. The magic of the day continued as the crowd was awed by Steven Haberman, a premier mentalist and magician. James A. Meehan, Worthy Patron, toastmaster for the day, cleverly introduced guests with well-recognized phrases and facts from years past. For a century now, Ellwood City Chapter members have supported the charitable work of the Order through our statewide projects. The Chapter has always enjoyed an active presence on a local level. With 150 members, approximately half their numbers are 50-year members. The Chapter lends their support to the Salvation Army’s People in Need projects, Holy Redeemer’s Social Services food bank, the Butler VA Hospital, Cancer Caring Centers in Cranberry and Pittsburgh, Miryams at Bethlehem Haven, Pittsburgh, supporting women who are trying to improve themselves, and by donating art supplies to St. Anthony’s School at Duquesne University for children with Down syndrome. The Chapter’s major fund raiser is their annual soup suppers. All this and more is part of their commitment to the community that has always given support to our OES charitable efforts. For the past 10 years, the Chapter has hosted an annual visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Over 100 children and adults attend this seasonal event that includes a brunch served by the Chapter members with fun activities and a gift from Santa. In May, a Little Ladies Tea with a real Princess has become another highly anticipated annual event. These parties are a gift to the community as a thank you for the wonderful support they receive from the community. The Youth Committee is already hard at work planning Santa’s next visit. Congratulations Ellwood City Chapter!

Shriner’s Hospital Benefits from Fraternal Relations Freeland Chapter #323 Order of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile, Chapter #28-came together and sold opportunities for a patriotic table runner to benefit the children at Shriner’s Hospital. The table runner was the gift of Joan Kohn, a member of both organizations. The amount of $85 was converted into gift cards and gifts to be given to the children who are receiving treatment at the hospital. The Philadelphia hospital recently celebrated 90 years of operation providing no cost services to children of many ages. The lucky winner was also a member of OES and Daughters of the Nile.
