D OCTOR OF S CIENCE IN BUSINESS A DMINISTRATION (D.S. in B .A .) WILLIAM PAUL HAAS, O.P. President of Providence College T h e Very Reverend William P. H aas, O.P., is a native of Net.., Jersey. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph J. H aas, he was educated at the W est Side High School in Newark and Seton H all Preparatory School in South Orange. After being graduated from Providence College with an A.B. Degree in 1945, h e went on to receive the S.T. Lr. Degree at the Pontifical Institu te in Washington, D. C., in 1954. In 1962 he earned his Ph.D. at the Un iversity of Fribourg in Switzerland. He was ordained at Washington, D. C., in 1953. Father H aas taught Theology and Philosophy at Emmanuel College; Philosoph of Educa­ tion at the Oblate Seminary in Natick, !; Contemporary T homism at the Harvard Catholic Club; and Philosophy at Providence College. He inaugurated a special p rogram of religious studies at P urdue while on the faculty of Notre Dame and conducted courses in Con­ temporary Christian Thought at the St. Thomas Aquinas Center for Catholic Students. He was also Professor of Contemporary Theology at Wabash College in Indiana. In 1965, h e be­ came President of P rovidence College. An author, he h as written on " The Contemporary Arts" and contribu ted to learned jour­ nals and religious publications. His Ph.D. dissertation on "The Con ception of Law an d the Unity of Peirce's Philosophy" was published by the Universi ty of Notre Dame Press. His paintings h ave been exhibited in New England and the Middle W est. A former R egional Chairman of the Catholic College T eachers of Sacred Doctrine, Father H aas is a director of the Packard Manse Center for Ecumenical Studies, the Rhode Island Phil­ harmonic Orchestra, and In ternational House of Rhode Island. He serves as a member of the Commission on Liberal Learning of the Association of American Colleges, the American Society for Aesthetics, the Butler Hospital, and the Advisory Coun cil on Extension and Continuing Education of the U . S. Department of Health, Education and W elfare.

D OCTOR OF S CIENCE IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (D.S . in B.A.) C. ROBERT YEAGER Presiden t} L. G. Balfour Company A graduate of the Unlversity of Kentucky, Mr. Yeager was born in that state on J uly IS, 1911. A ranking officer in the ROTC while in college, he became a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Infan try R eserve in 1941, and for five years served in various posts, terminating his active duty as Colonel. R eturning to the Balfour Company, he was appointed Assistant to the Presiden t in 1947 and rose to the Presidency in 1960. In addition to his duties as chief executive officer of the company, h e serves as offi cer and director of the L. G. Balfour Company of Canada, L td .; the Balfour Realty T rust; and other Balfour subsidiaries. H e is a director of the Att! boro T rust Company, the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Attleboro, Manufacturer's Mutual Insurance Company, and several other organizations. He is a trustee of the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, on the Board of Governors of the Massachusetts Safety Council, a member of the Governor's Advisory Com­ mittee on Commercial and Industrial Development for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and a member of the Massachusetts Advisory Council of the Small Business Administration . Mr. Yeager served as President of the Associated Industries of :Massachusetts from 1963 to 1965 and is presently serving as a m ember of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. In 1963 he was presented the Distinguished Service Award of the University of Ken tucky for service to h is alm a mater and in 1965 was presented the Distinguished Citizen Award from his hometown in Middlesboro, Kentucky. At the Cen tennial Exercises of the University of Kentucky in 1965, Mr. Yeager was among ninety graduates who received h onorary doctor's degrees as Distinguish ed Alumni. His d ub memberships include the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. And rews, Scotland; the Union Club an d the Commercial Club of Boston; the Canadian Club of N w York; H igh ­ land Coun try Clu b, Attleboro; Pinehurst Country Club, Pinehurst, North Carolina. and others. Born in Philadelphi a in 1916, Mr. Wolgin received his elementary education in that city. He was graduated from Penn State College in 1938 with a major in economics, and did graduate work at T emple University and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. At the end of World War II he fo unded, together with his brothers and his father, ,the Atlas Credit Corpora­ tion_ In 1966 Atlas Credit Corporation was combined with Sunset International Petroleum Cor­ poration and became officially known as Sunasco, Incorporated. Shares of Sunasco are -t raded on the New York Stock Exchange, The Pacific Coast Stock Exchange and the Philadelphia­ B ltimore-Washing on Exchange. Although r al estate oriented, this organization is involved in oil and gao drilling. real estate development, home-b uilding and home-financing in forty-five states, tw Canadian Provinces, Mexico and the Grand Bahamas. A member of the Mayor's Committee on H i·gher Education, he is also one of the founders and sponsors of the Theater of the Living Arts. He is a Trustee of the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. Mr. Wolgin is sought after by European and Asiatic business for advice on credit fin ancing. He has been invited by the J apanese Government to assist financiers there in establishing Americ n- consumer credit. T he Government of Mexico has proposed him fo r an award in recognition of his help in developing economic ties with that coun try. His son, Mark, is presently a student in Bryant College.

A native of Massach usetts, .Mr. T hompson was born in Newton in 1905. He was educated at the Browne and Nichols chool and at Dartmouth College, where he was graduated in 1928, and attended The Amos T uck School of Business Administration for one year. H e received his law degree from Suffolk Law School in 1934. After a position with the Newton Trust Company, he came to Providence with the Provi­ dence 'ational Bank in 1937, and was elect d President of this bank in 1943 at the age of 37. H e was in strumen tal in effecting the consolidations which resulted in the formation of the Indus, trial National Bank of Rhode Isla nd . H e served as Executive Vice President of the Industrial Na­ tional until joining Tex tron, Inc., in March of 1956. He was elected President of Textron in 1957 , a position h e held until June of 1960, when he was made Chairman of the Board and Chi f Executive Officer. In addition to being Execu tive Director of T extron, Mr. Thompson is a member of the board of American R esearch and Dev lopment COliporation , Fir men's Mutual Insurance Com­ pany, Industrial National Bank of Rhode Island, and Sperry R and Co ~pora t i o n ; also Citizen's Sch larship Foundation of America, Inc., Keep America Beau ti ful, Inc., and National Associa­ tion of Manufacturers. A son of Colonel Dudley Warren W atkins, USAF (ret.) and the lat Ruth Woodruff W at­ kins, Mr. Watkins was born in Corp us Christi, T exas in 1912. H e 'was educated in private school in the , Mexico and the Philippines. Beginning his career in the newspaper world wi th the Dayton, Ohio, Journal and H erald, he also served on the Baltimore Sun as reporter, aviation editor and military correspondent. In 1945, Mr. Watkins joined the Providence Jou rnal-Bulletin as Assistant to the Publisher, rising to his present position in 1961. His military achievem nts include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal Witll nine Oak Leaf Clusters, Dis tinguished Unit Citation, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars, W Ol'ld War II Victory Medal, American Campaign M dal, and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and Defense Departmen t Commendation Medal. A Major in the USAF, he was a World War II fi gh ter pilot and served as Operations Offi cer in North Africa with the 325th l'igh ter Group; Ex cutive Officer, Asiatic T heatre Branch, ACAS-Plans; and Chief of the Air Staff, H q. USAF, Washington, D. C. H e was Commanding Offic r of the Rhode Island Air National Guard and the Rhode Island Wing of the Air Force Association. Recently, Mr. Watkins was el cted President of .the New England Daily Newspaper Asso­ ciation . He is also a Director of the Inter-American Press Association and a m mber of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. An active yachtsman, Mr. Watkins is a member of the Cruising Club of America, the Ida Lewis Yacht Club, the New Bedford Yacht Clu b, and the New York Yacht Club. Con tinuing h is family's long-time association with Br wn University, Mr. Brown is Secretary of the Corporation and Senior Fellow, and he is Chairman of the Planning and Building Committee for the University. He serves on the Committee of Management for the John Carter Brown Library. A Regen t of the mi thsonian Institution, he is also Chairman of the National Portrait Gallery Commission and the National Armed Forces Museum Advisory Board. H e is T reasu rer of the Mediaeval Academy of America, Presiden t and T reasurer of the Byzantine Institute, and T rustee of the American School of Classi cal Studies at Athens. Mr. Brown is also a Trustee of St. George's chool in Newport. In 1945, he was Chief of Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives Section, U. S. Group Control Council in Germany. He served h is country as Assi tant S cretary of the Navy fOT Air from 1946 to 1949. He holds the title of Commander , Order of Leopold II of , as well as that of Chevalier, Legion of Honor from France. D OCTOR OF H UMANE LETTERS (D .H .L.) MARY ELIZABETH SHARPE Civic Leader Devoted to Community Beautification

Mrs. Henry D. Sharpe was born in Syracuse, New York. Educated in the public and pri­ vate schools of that city, she and her mother and her sis er began making can dy at home to sell to neighbors and friends, an enterprise which grew into a flourishing tea room and candy shop on iith A en ue in New York City. During World War I, Mrs. Sharpe joined the American Red Cross and went to France as a volunteer canteen worker in 1917. Married in 1920 to Henry Dex ter Sharpe, Rhode Island industrialist and philanthropist, she came to Providence and through an avi d interest in gardens and design, became an amateur landscape artist. For the past twenty years Mrs. Sharpe h s landscap d the grounds of Brown University, as well as church and library grounds in Providence, St. Louis, and Athens, Greece. Brown University honored her with a degree in 1950, and she was awarded the Mon tague Medal fo r Civic Achievement by the Garden Club of America. T ogether with her son, she was granted The Roger Williams Award for distinguished service to the ci ty by the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce. The Providence Art Club h as also bestowed upon her the Benson Medal. Formerly a Director o[ the Garden Club of America, M rs. Sharpe has won two cita-tions from the Federated Garden Clubs. She is a member of the International Committee of the New York Museum of Modern Art; a Director of "Impact R. I." fo r city beautification, and a Director of the Providence Preservation ociety. She is the mother of one son, Henry Dexter Sharpe, Junior, who -carries on as fourth gen­ eration head of the family business since h i ~ fa ther's death. Precision P ark, where this com· pany is located, was 1 ndscaped under the personal supervision of Mrs. Sharpe and has Won awards for its beauty and originality. Its nclosed Japanese courtyard has been cited fo r its authenticity and design. Mrs. Sharpe, a leader in city beautification, has completely rc-treed the down-town section of Providence.
