Wreaths Across America

MDSSAR Vice President James Adkins gave a moving speech at the Wreaths Across America event in Salisbury attended by many. “Remember not their deaths but their lives.” “We honor the men who serve today by honoring the men and women of the past.” “The cost they paid continues our freedom.” Attendees were invited to say the veterans name as they placed the wreaths on the soldiers' grave as a further remembrance to these past heroes. P a g e | 3 NSSAR News National Registrar John Sinks recently reported on a number of sources for acceptable Maryland Service. A quick summary of some major sources for different kinds of Maryland service may be useful. A source for Maryland privateer service is given above. I am limiting the sources to those that cover all or most of the state, rather than a particular county. Tax Lists—For each year and jurisdiction, a Maryland tax list providing evidence of patriotic service has been posted by the Maryland SAR at their website: https://www.mdssar.org/membership/marylandtaxlists Military service—There are readily available several sources for Maryland military service during the Revolution. • Military service and pension records in the National Archives—available on-line at fold3.com, a commercial site. • Archives of Maryland—published Maryland records now available on-line at http://aomol.msa.maryland.gov/html/volumes.html See especially Vol. 18 for rolls of the Maryland continental units. Also relevant for Maryland service, including civil service, are Vol. 11 for records of the Maryland Convention, Vols. 11, 12, & 16 for Council of Safety, Vols. 16, 21, 45, 47, 48 for the Council of Maryland, and Vol. 78 for the Maryland Conventions. • Militia rolls—S. Eugene Clements and F. Edward Wright published abstracts of rolls from the Maryland Historical Society and the Maryland State Archives in The Maryland Militia in the Revolutionary War. • Public Service Records—Harry G. Peden. Jr. has gathered from several sources public service records and published abstracts in Maryland Service Records, 1775-1783. Some of the records could be for payment of taxes in commodities rather than selling supplies, but all provide evidence of service. • Oaths of Allegiance—Original records for many Maryland oaths of allegiance are divided between the Maryland Historical Society and the Maryland State Archives. The Maryland Historical Society holdings and references for some published lists can be found at http://www.mdhs.org/findingaid/oaths-fidelity-or-oaths-allegiance-1775-1778- ms-3088. The card catalogue in the Maryland State Archives includes both those who took the oath of allegiance and those who were recorded as not having done so. Baltimore and Harford County men who did not take the oath are included, and there may be others. Some publications, including Bettie Sterling Carothers’ Maryland Oaths of Fidelity, relied on this source and are not acceptable as evidence of service.

Application Status. As of December, new member applications were being reviewed about 5 ½ weeks after they were received, and supplemental applications were being reviewed about 19 weeks after they were received. As of Nov. 30th, • 4,167 new member applications had been received, 57 more than all of 2016. Of those, 594 were junior applications, 136 more than all of 2016. • 1,136 supplemental applications had been received through November 30th. In 2017 the staff has worked on 6,140 applications as of December 21st, approving 5,980 and pending 160. Patriots Ball Captain Cronin Awarded Gold Good Citizenship At 56th Annual Patriots Ball PG Guzy and Pres. Deering present the NSSAR Gold Good Citizenship Award to CPT Michael Paul Cronin with wife Jackie as MC George Lewis reads the proclamation.

PG Larry Guzy and MDSSAR Pres. Don Deering had the privilege and honor to present the prestigious NSSAR Gold Good Citizenship Medal to a “living Patriot” at the Annual Patriots Ball on December 16th, 2017 at Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City, Maryland. Captain Michael Paul Cronin, USN, Retired, was honored for his lasting contribution to our American legacy as a Navy fighter pilot and his courageous resistance to threats and brutalities while held as a Prisoner of War by the North Vietnamese.

On January 13, 1967, after two tours of duty and 175 missions, with 125 flown over North Vietnam, then Lieutenant Cronin was shot down and captured by the North Vietnamese Army and imprisoned for 2,243 days. He was released after the Paris Peace Accords were signed, on March 4, 1973, and returned to the where he served as a United States Navy flight instructor. The United States military record states: his North Vietnamese captors subjected then Lieutenant Commander Cronin to “extreme mental and physical cruelties” to obtain military information and false confessions for propaganda purposes and that he resisted those brutalities which contributed to eventual abandonment of harsh treatment by the North Vietnamese, thereby showing determination, courage, resourcefulness, and devotion to duty and country.”

Because of his steadfast dedication to our country and fellow compatriots he was awarded two Silver Star medals, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, four Bronze Star medals, 15 air medals, two Purple Heart medals, two Navy Commendation medals, two Navy Unit Commendations, and the Prisoner of War medal, all with Combat V. He retired as a United States Navy Captain. After returning home, Captain Cronin was astounded to learn no United States law existed to declare war crimes to be an offense that United States courts would prosecute. After six years of torture, he understood that such a law was crucial to protecting United States service personnel and citizens. Accordingly, during the mid-1990’s, while employed as a commercial airline pilot and while studying for his law degree, Captain Cronin conceived the idea of the War Crimes Act of 1996.

Semi-annual Meeting Battle of Yorktown Semi-Annual Meeting MDSSAR held its semi-annual meeting on Saturday, October 21, 2017, at the Johns Hopkins Club on the Johns Hopkins University’s Homewood campus. By tradition, the meeting is held as close as possible to the anniversary of General George Washington’s victory at Yorktown. Forty-two members and guests attended the meeting. The Board of Managers convened for a morning session that included a continental breakfast followed by a buffet luncheon. President Donald A. Deering officiated the meeting, and performed the installation of new members, and issued a few recognition certificates. Pres. Deering is a descendant of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, one of Maryland’s signers of the Declaration of Independence.

James S. Shaefer of the Homewood Museum on campus provided the attendees with a brief presentation on Charles Carroll’s connection to the victory at Yorktown. Carroll reported that “the cannoning at York[town] can be heard distinctly in Charles County.” In a letter, General Washington confided to Carroll that his adversary, British General Charles Cornwallis had been “passive beyond conception.” Following the British surrender on October 19, 1781, Maryland’s Lt. Colonel Tench Tilghman carried the news of the victory to the in after a four-day journey. Carroll brought the news of the surrender to the Maryland Capital at Annapolis, where he also translated and read publicly the letter of French Admiral F. J. P. Comte de Grasse to Governor . After thanking Maryland for its leadership in the war effort, the Commander-in-Chief wrote that Yorktown “affords a rational ground of belief that under the favor of Divine Providence, the freedom, independence and happiness of American will shortly be established upon the surest foundation.”

The business meeting adjourned but soon reassembled outside to form a procession across the campus, which was led by Pres. Deering, and the Colonial fifer (Dave Embrey), and Color Guard (VPG Lou Raborg). Timothy D. Mallory, 2nd VP MDSSAR, conducted a wreath laying ceremony upon arrival at the museum, and arranged the group photograph. The event concluded with a tour of the c. 1800 Homewood Museum, which is furnished with objects representative of the Carroll family’s occupancy. The Homewood Museum opened to the public in 1987, and was celebrating its 30th anniversary in operation.

P a g e | 12 A Wreaths Across America program was led by George Sattherwaite of the John Hanson Chapter. George did an outstanding job and National SAR President General Larry Guzy attended. A monumental effort was taken by George and all the volunteers. The Large fundraising groups were the Waldorf Jaycees, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 26, Waldorf Toyota, St Charles Highs School Marine JROTC, Giant Foods, Fraternal Order of Police, Felix Lodge chapters and Joint Base Bolling/ Anacostia Chapel Ministries along with several churches. Some of the groups brought buses of volunteers including the scouting groups (cubs, brownies, boy scouts, girl scouts, venture crew, etc.), PG County Public School Community Service Volunteers doing hours, and 4H Clubs from St Mary's and Charles County. The bugler is Major Richard Barns from the Maryland National Defense Force. The Cub Scout Pack 439 from Prince Frederick MD laid the Air Force Wreath.

The volunteer list was over 835 with more than 750 showing up on the frigid day. Total wreaths laid was 8027, more than doubling last year and 33% cemetery coverage. Goal for next year is 12-16,000 wreaths. the community goal is to fill the entire 27,000 grave cemetery. This is huge. Total wreaths distributed for the entire effort this year 1,572,000 - delivered throughout the country from Columbia Falls Maine.
