NEWS FROM ST. SAVIOR’S…...

St. Saviour’s put on its full array of services over the Palm Sunday/Easter period and our thanks were due to John Stoddart and David Ireland for their leadership. A good congregation of all ages enjoyed a beautifully decorated church on Easter Day; the effort that goes on so discreetly is always highly appreciated. And then again the congregation gathered on the second Sunday in Easter to hear the bans read by John Stoddart for a local son of the parish, and to enjoy an address based on the familiar story of Doubting Thomas. Looking ahead, the Holmbush Garden Open Day in aid of St. Saviour’s is set for 10th May. Holmbush will be joined by the main house in opening their grounds & visitors will have the opportunity of seeing one of the area’s finest spring gardens. The plant stall will be in operation and will welcome contributions of surplus house plants, bedding plants and vegetable seedlings.

GARDNER’S JOURNEL…..

Easter Day and spring seemed to burst into life with a prolonged spell of warmer weather. Cherries, camellias, rhododendrons, forsythia, pieris and magnolias are mixing and matching their vibrant colours to magnificent effect. At ground level primroses, daffodils and tulips are abundant and anemones are showing their delicate white flowers in a carpet of leaves and bluebells. Terrace planters full of tulips, narcissi and primula or pansies look their best, but it is time to start thinking about how to plant them up for the summer. Mowing is underway to provide contrasting shades of fresh spring green. Flowerbeds have received their winter clean-up and a bolstering of leaf compost and a little fertilizer. Weeding is becoming a more serious issue. Leave spring bulbs until their foliage has died down. Give fishponds a clean up, repot irises and remove rubbish or rotting leaves. Put in place netting to foil the heron! In the vegetable garden the last of last years crops, purple sprouting broccoli, is still coming in. As beds are emptied manure and/or compost should be added in preparation for the new season. Sowings have already been made of parsnips, swiss chard and spinach. Rotate crops from year to year and pay heed to the merits of companion planting as a natural check on pests. Potatoes, onion sets, sweet peas and garlic are well out of the ground, and rhubarb is being harvested. Tomatoes and lettuce are advanced in the greenhouse and squash and bean poles will follow. Try starting parsnips, spinach and beet in lengths of gut- tering in the greenhouse. Outside, containers generating their own micro-climates and producing good early crops of potatoes and longer term root crops are showing healthy growth. With the days lengthening the dawn and evening chorus is increasing pronounced. Pests – slugs, snails and rabbits – are also more in evidence and the occasional late evening slug patrol is productive. Nesting boxes are in occupation. Keep the bird tables lightly stocked but discourage the squirrels! And finally looking ahead, a date for the diaries is the Holmbush Open Garden Day on May 10th – prime bluebell time. The main house has also kindly agreed to open its gardens, so there will be plenty to see & all within our own parish boundaries. Quercus

SPRING CRIME PREVENTION

As the warmer weather arrives, the opportunities for thieves can increase with open windows, insecure sheds & gardening tools left out – but there are some simple ways you can help keep your home secure: - At Home  Lock all doors before you go out & when you go to bed, & ensure all windows are secure before leaving your home.  If you have any UPVC doors, make sure your lift the handle AND use the key to lock it properly.  Register your possessions on free online property database www.immobilise.com it can help the police return them to you if they are lost or stolen.

In The Garden  Secure your rear garden by shutting & locking any gates. You should also check any boundary fences to make sure they are secure & well maintained.  Put away tools & gardening equipment securely after use – they could be stolen or even used to break into your home if left lying around – & remember to lock your shed, preferably with two ‘hasp & staple’ locks near the top & bottom of the door.  Tools & gardening equipment should be visibly marked with your postcode & house number/ name – this can deter thieves & help police identify the rightful owner.  Remember to always lock your garage door securely. Metal ‘up & over’ doors can be secured with extra locks fitted to either side and/or a floor-mounted locking ‘T’ bar with a closed shackle padlock. Wooden garage doors can be secured with two substantial hasps & staples & closed shackle padlocks.

In The Car  Don’t leave any valuables in your car – even if you know the bag on the front seat is empty, a thief may still try their luck, leaving you with a broken window to deal with.  Remove your sat-nav & its holder from the car – don’t leave it in the glove box as that’s the first place a thief will look – & make sure you wipe away any suction marks.  It may sound obvious, but remember to shut your windows & sunroof when you leave your car.

If you need any further crime prevention advice then please feel free to contact PCSO Tracy Bicknell either via e-mail at [email protected] or call on my mobile 07825- 431676.

Nature at the Heart of Politics By Mike Russell of the Sussex Wildlife Trust

Another general election is upon Legislation to protect our wildlife has largely us, another chance to raise the failed to halt decline in most species; environment & wildlife as fundamentally protecting individual species will only work if important issues, another potential groan of the habitats, climatic conditions & the disappointment as they get buried in the melee diversity of nature on which those species of bruising political debate centered on the depend are also maintained. We must get away from the idea that wildlife Numerous studies show that a healthy & the environment is a block to economic environment & regular contact with wildlife have growth, an idea that has strong political a number of benefits for communities, people currency at the moment. Politicians & with both physical & mental health problems & decision makers need to take into account for those confined to their homes & in residential people’s desire to live in places where wildlife care. But these benefits are not measured, they can flourish, they realise the benefits that don’t have a pure economic value & therefore this brings to their lives, it is about time that are not valued by decision-makers, hence over those who make the decisions around their 60% of our species have declined in the last 50 lives also realise it. years & continue to do so at an alarming rate; our actions as a society have undermined nature’s ability to support us, just as our need for that support has increased.

In an effort to try & get the environment right up to the top of the political agenda, The Wildlife Trusts, along with the RSPB, are proposing to all parties the implementation of a Nature & Wellbeing Act to bring about the recovery of nature within a generation, for the benefit of people & wildlife. Loss of habitats, plants & animals affects how our environment soaks up extreme rainfall, absorbs carbon, & provides clean water. It affects the health of our soils, fish stocks & pollinators. It affects how we can adapt to climate change, the liveability of our cities & the productivity of our countryside.
