Northern Hub - Ordsall Chord Matt Benson & Mark Chambers
What is it all about???
• Creating a direct link between Manchester Victoria and Manchester Piccadilly for the 1st time • Increased capacity along the Castlefield Corridor • Reducing congestion at Manchester Piccadilly
Legal Challenges.
Appeals launched by Mark Whitby due to the chord disconnecting the UK’s first passenger railway
Most recently there was a court case at the high court in London which was thrown out
Additional Challenges:
Significant amounts track work is taking place on top of viaducts
One end of the chord is in Manchester City council jurisdiction the other in in Salford Council – Planning Permission

Track Engineer Perspective of the Ordsall Chord Project Matt Benson Areas to I’d like discuss
► Engineering timeline and background to design- Form A Development and Key Changes at Form B/AFC. To include brief review of each site
► Some areas of improvement needed
► Key Successes and Challenges
► Challenges to norm
► Innovations Ordsall Chord Manchester Victoria West Remodelling

Ordsall Lane Junction Remodelling
Removal of MOSI Connection
► Instrumental part of the works for advance Signalling and OLE purposes
► Historic connection to the network removed- albeit once in the last 10 years!

Some areas of improvement
► Do it again but better!
► Repeatability of installation
► Concrete check rail panel curvature
► Multi-discipline SI/TBI and Model
► Working around axle counters
Challenges to the norm
► Successful support on CRT (20) ESRs where line speed is 25mph
► IRJ Removals for Re-signalling- Should the industry continue to remove or put some more engineering behind their removal e.g- 6 hole glued IBJs; do these need removing?
► Support for derogations throughout the project from Track RAM team
Key Successes and Tools
► Building Information Modelling (BIM)
► Weekly Engineering Meetings
► BIM for Footbridge- Design and Construction all 3D- no 2D drawings done. All fabrications done off 3D
► Early Engagement with RAM and Maintainer at Form A- continuity of staff. This was instrumental to Transport and Works Act and then Civils
► Co-locations of teams doing the work + integration Innovations
► Under Bearer Pads
► Rhomberg IVES and VTRAS Transition Arrangements
► ZLR Clips
► Structural Expansion Switches
► Hydrobrakes
► Teflon Fishplates Lube
