2020 Community Report

www.eicc.edu/sccfoundation | 500 Belmont Road, Bettendorf IA College & Foundation President’ s Letter

2020 will be remembered as a year like no other. In January, Scott Community College was planning future projects and by March we quickly transitioned to operating remotely due to the complexities of COVID-19 and the resulting pandemic. Our primary focus from that moment on was to determine how best to serve our students and act on those decisions during these challenging times.

In an effort to better serve students, we added new instructional delivery methods, such as Zoomed lectures mixed with face-to-face labs. As students were transitioned into remote learning, our Foundation helped students obtain a laptop for class work and provided funds for internet access to help with these new technology needs. 0

When the pandemic forced businesses to shut down, the Foundation found ways to support students who were struggling as a result of lost income. Students were helped through the Student Assistance program with items such as food, utilities, and rent.

In addition to supporting students during the pandemic, the SCC Foundation held its annual BASH fundraising event in a virtual format. The event successfully raised just over $20,000 in support of our Deserving Student Scholarship fund and Student Emergency Assistance funds. 2

The annual College Employee Campaign raised $20,987 in support of scholarships and college programs during a year when fundraising was a challenge for many non-profit organizations across the nation.

Despite all of the pandemic-related challenges, in the fall of 2020 the Foundation awarded over $123,000 in scholarships. Continuing to support students during the pandemic will be our top priority in 2021. We will listen closely to our students and faculty for other areas of support that may be needed during this unprecedented time. We will continue to encourage our students of color, first-generation, and non-traditional students to

complete scholarship applications, so that they may be better represented among our scholarship recipients. 0

Our organizational success is a continued testimony to the commitment of our donors, Foundation Board members, faculty, and staff, and their unwavering support of our students. Each and every donation from you enriches the lives of our students and our community. We are truly grateful for your support, and we look forward to working with you to create additional opportunities for our students’ success at Scott Community College.

We wish you a safe and healthy 2021. With true gratitude and warmest regards,

SCC BASH In-a-box

In response to the pandemic, and for the safety of our students and supporters, we chose not to host our annual fundraiser, BASH, in-person for 2020. Instead, we were excited to have people celebrate with us this year by trying desserts made by our Culinary Arts students, preparing dinner at home using recipes from our own SCC chefs, and joining us for our live virtual event.

Although we didn't quite reach our fundraising goal, we were extremely grateful to have the support of 30 generous sponsors and the donation of over 40 auction items. The $20,000 we raised will greatly help our students with scholarships and Student Emergency Assistance needs.

SCC Student Assistance Program

The financial stress our students experience was at an all-time high in 2020 due to COVID-19. We were thankful that we had support from our donors to help students through our Student Assistance Program.

Our Student Assistance Program consists of various funds that students can apply to receive. There are some funds that are provided as a loan, requiring students who receive assistance to pay back the dollars. These funds are provided to help students with emergency expenses that would interfere with their ability to succeed in their course work. The other funds we have are provided as a grant for small education related expenses.

In 2020, we provided approximately $40,670.00 in Student Assistance Funds, more than double the amount awarded in 2019. These funds are used by students for expenses such as:

Gas Groceries Vehicle repairs Utilities Textbooks Tools A laptop Testing fees Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Membership fees Internet Rent

This support has helped these students stay in class alongside their peers. The students that are supported are truly grateful for the assistance and the ability to direct their focus back towards their educational goals. 13 Donor Giving Circles & Societies

16 Your support could change the future

Planning What to Give

Surprisingly, there are different tax results from giving different types of property. Consider for example, highly appreciated securities. If stocks have been owned more than one year, then donors can deduct not just their original cost, but also any “paper profit” present in the gift. Best of all, no capital gains taxes are due when you give securities. Real estate, mutual funds, and other types of property offer the same advantages. At death, it makes sense to leave “tax-burdened” assets such as U.S. Savings Bonds and death benefits from retirement accounts to charities, thus allowing heirs to avoid income and death taxes.

Planning How to Give

You might want to join our many friends who have helped the college through bequests – gifts through their wills and living trusts. You also could choose to make a gift that reserves lifetime income to you or a family member. The college would benefit in the same manner as if you had made a bequest, but you would be entitled to charitable deductions and other tax benefits today. You could provide a gift to the college that can be used now, with the remainder passing to loved ones to assist with their future financial security. Or you may prefer the simplicity of an immediate gift of cash or property. By tailoring the form of your gift to fit your personal situation, you can gain maximum tax rewards, maintain financial security, and make a truly meaningful contribution.

Planning When to Give

Many people plan gifts at year-end to provide important tax deductions. You may find charitable contributions most helpful in years when you have a large influx of taxable income from a bonus, sale of a business or successful investment, or inheritance of taxable assets such as savings bonds or IRAs. As noted above, large deductions are available even if you retain lifetime income from your gift. But the most practical time to make significant gifts may be through your estate plan, by means of a will, living trust, or beneficiary designated on a life insurance policy or retirement account. Such gifts are wholly revocable while you are alive and may save significant taxes for your estate.

17 The Purpose of Your Gift

Your support of Scott Community College should be carefully planned to assure your personal satisfaction. Your gift can be established as a memorial to a loved one or special friend. You may want to earmark your gift for a scholarship or particular purpose, or simply say that your gift may be applied wherever the greatest need of the college exists.

Establishing a Scholarship

Scholarships may be established by philanthropic individuals, companies, and service organizations to benefit our students. These scholarships can take on many different forms.

Note: Donations may also be made to existing internal college scholarships. The Foundation Office can help you with this process.
