Marylebone was developed very much as a residential area. It took its name from a church dedicated to St Mary which sat on the bank of a small stream or bourne; the area became known as St Mary at the Bourne and, later, as St Marylebone.

In the past many well known people have lived here including the artist J M W Turner, writer Charles Dickens and mathematician Charles Babbage, often referred to as father of the computer, as well as three of the Beatles. Today it continues to be home to an interesting and diverse population. There is a vibrant retail community in and around Marylebone High Street with independent retailers, restaurants and local art galleries, and in many doctors and dentists have private consulting rooms.

The area offers much to do and see. displays lifelike and lifesize models of various celebrities while the Wallace Collection in Hertford House, a historic London townhouse, is home to a collection of the highest quality, including furniture, paintings and arms and armour. Wigmore Hall, so important in London musical life, presents over 400 events in a season, with world famous musicians appearing.

For those who like to have a wander, Marylebone boasts some of London’s most lovely architecture. There are streets of terraced Georgian and Edwardian houses, some still lived in as family homes. Keep an eye open for the attractive fanlights over many of their front doors. And take a stroll down Baker Street where fictional detective Sherlock Holmes and his friend Dr Watson supposedly resided at Number 221 B. As this number does not exist, the lies between numbers 237 and 241, at the Regent’s Park end of the street. The interior is furnished and decorated as it would have been when they lived there.

Regent’s Park has good walks, colourful flowerbeds, an open air theatre in the summer months, and a boating lake. Throughout the whole of Marylebone there are countless good places to eat or just have a coffee and watch the world go by.

As Marylebone is so central, everything in London is within easy reach. It is not hard to get to grips with the underground system and wherever you go you will always be within a short walk of something interesting. You need never be bored!
