OUR HAVEN WILDLIFE REHABILITATION AND RESCUE SHELTER Mobile: 0400 079 337 or 0401 799 721 www.ourhavenwildlifeshelter.org.au Loch Sport is surrounded by National Parks and native bush, and while that poses some issues of its own, it also provides us with a unique opportunity to witness and live amongst our beautiful wildlife.

The wildlife has to navigate the ways of human interference with roads, traffic, housing and fences being extremely dangerous for them. Their normal travel routes being blocked off, they are forced onto the roads more and more. Kangaroos don't have good eyesight. When they commit to crossing a road, there is not a car in front of them, they cannot understand speed and it is often said that roos just jump into the cars. We all realise that accidents happen through no fault of the drivers. BUT PLEASE be aware, driving during dusk to dawn is when kangaroos, wallabies, koalas and wombats are most active. If you drive just 5 kph slower you will be more likely to avoid a collision with these precious animals. Another way of protecting our wildlife is to NOT feed them (unless during severe weather conditions when they have no natural feed). Fresh water in differing height containers is all that is necessary. DO NOT FEED BREAD to any wildlife. You will be doing more harm than good. Bread provides no nutritional benefits and causes Lumpy Jaw - a serious bacterial infection of the jaw- in kangaroos and wallabies, which can lead to a very slow, painful, death by starvation. However, if you must feed them, offer long, dry hay (not stalky) or specific kangaroo pellets/ muesli, available from most stock feeders. Birdseed is for birds!! And don't make them reliant on any feed, make it a random treat. Saturday morning sailing has seen a great turn up of people interested in sailing, come along to give it a try with Greg, it’s fun. Drop in for a coffee and watch the activities.

The School Water Safety day on Friday 12 February was very successful despite the drizzle. Loch Sport Primary School back for another WS day with Wurruck Primary and Woodside Primary visiting this time. The sail ability yachts are a great drawcard for the children who also attended a water safety session with Vanessa from Marine Safety Victoria, followed by a visit to our CFA and Ambulance volunteers. Check out our Facebook page for a video created by Woodside Primary, well done.

The Eastern Region Regatta scheduled for Feb 13-14 at Paynesville GLYC was cancelled due to the quick lockdown. Very disappointing for our sailors who were all geared up to compete against other clubs in the area.

Heat 3 of the Commodores Series was sailed on Saturday Feb 20 with five entries. Results 1st Paul Amaira Tasar, 2nd Ellie MacGregor Corsair, 3rd Dan Smith Southern Cross.

The Marlay Point yacht race from Lake Wellington to Paynesville was sailed Saturday night 6 March; our club had three crews competing They all finished the race - well done, crews. Results - Mad Rascals. Southern Cross 23 Dan Smith with Michael Riky and Glenn Greenhalgh. 23rd over line 29th on Handicap; Tarquin Hartley 18 Colin Theodore + 1 crew Jim 25th over line 24th on handicap; Moocha Sonata 7 Angus MacGregor with Hamish MacGregor, Greg McNeil and Tracy Dines 28th overline 31st on Handicap.

It was a long night with wind on the nose all the way - 15 knot winds across Lake Wellington as usual, light winds in the Straits with lots of tacking needed. Mad Rascals ran aground on the inside corner just before Seacombe and was overtaken by Moocha and Tarquin. Then she got back-winded about 1/2 down ending up in the trees. Used a boat hook to pole out doing a 360 turn.

Strong wind again exiting from required lots of tacks to get out. Wind still on the nose, four long tacks before Loch Sport. Sunrise near Waddy Point saw us catching Tarquin and Moocha. Winds dropping over took both near Wattle Point then Light winds through to finish. Overall a long hard night and a bit cold as usual. Boaties Bar at the club will be open on Saturday nights between 4 and 7 or later. BYO nibbles or some snacks available. Come along and enjoy views from the deck in a relaxed quiet atmosphere. Check our Facebook page for any extra activities over Easter. Interested in the weather for your weekend? Since the last time we went to print, the brigade has been quite busy with 6 incidents over a 5-day period over the Australia Day long weekend with a vehicle fire on the Friday night, then a call to support Golden Beach late on Saturday night.

Having returned to Loch Sport for about 2 hours we were again called to an incident around 2am in National Park Rd and corner of Cove St to find a house fully alight with flames. This was a long drawn out incident which took about 1 hour to get under control and several more hours to put out. The Loch Sport crew were supported in this battle with help from the brigades from Seaspray, Longford, Sale, Stradbroke and Willung. As well as both Loch Sport Tanker 1, Loch Sport Tanker 2 and the Loch Sport Forward Command Vehicle (FCV), plus members from District 10 Headquarters’ in Sale, Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria and SP Ausnet. I wish to thank everybody involved for their help and support with this incident.

Upon cleaning up the vehicles the next morning the brigade was called to a small motor vehicle fire in Seagull Drive, later that afternoon a power transformer outside the bakery had a small fire on the high voltage part of the unit. Then later that night the brigade was called out again to support Golden Beach in the area of Dutson which turned out to be the flaring from the gas plant at Longford, it’s better to be safe than sorry with that one. Also recently there was a small fire in a kitchen in Kangaroo St.

The brigade were called to help Longford fire brigade with a major structure incident in Hobsons Rd. This was a 2-day deployment, with over 20 appliances called from all over the area to help fight this fire which occurred in several sheds on the property.

On the night of 10th March the brigade held its annual elections for the Brigade management team, this appointment is for the next 2 years, the results are the following: Captain – Peter Connell 1st Lt – John West 2nd Lt – Rob Ferris 3rd Lt – Peter Lambe 4th Lt – Wayne Swetham Secretary - Bernie Massmann Treasurer – Wendy Dodd

As some members of the public might have noticed, the brigade has taken delivery of a new Toyota Ultra-Light Tanker. This has been made possible by the donations and support from the community of Loch Sport and the brigade wishes to thank all concerned.

Until next time Take care Pete Connell Loch Sport Brigade

April is almost upon us and daylight savings ends April. The Men’s Shed was busy getting ready for the Garage Sale that took place on March 8 and I am pleased to say it was quite successful with a big influx of visitors in town for the long weekend. All the Boys have been doing a great job getting bird houses built, garden plants grown – and Duncan and Len plying their craftsmanship in refurbishing a table of unique proportions. Well done, fellows, another happy lady. We will be making available mobile planter boxes for those who like to display gardening on the balcony. If anyone wants one made to order call into the shed. We also make street numbers etc., which are a must for our ambos and firies, please get that number up. We must convey our best wishes to Dick Clay who had a nasty fall and has been recuperating in hospital at Heyfield. Coming to some sort of normality we had our first meeting on February 22 at the new Golf Club building and a big thanks to David for the use of this great new venue. Anyone travelling around should have a look-see at what they have done.

A full meeting of all our tenants was welcomed and reports acknowledged. Our regular reserve cleaner-upper Brian is having serious back problems.

Consequently we put out an alert for a new tractor driver and had four expressions of interest. Robin Keitley a volunteer with CFA, Neighborhood Watch and the Men’s Shed donned his new cap and did a great job of cleaning the reserve. We thank you and also Noel, Neal and David who are also assisting. A clean-up of the reserve was scheduled for 15 March.

Our next meeting will be held on May 25 at the Golf clubhouse at 10.00 am. Looking forward to a happier 2021 for all our Lochsportians.

Thank goodness for freezers, although a few of us were eating a lot of salads and fruit for the next week. Once again the Seniors trip and meeting will be held before The Link goes to print, so not much to say about our trip to Tom’s Cap Vineyard except that we are all looking forward to the day as we had a trip there cancelled last year because of Covid. Our meeting in April is Monday 19th at 10.30am at the Public Hall, fingers crossed we are not in lockdown. We have had a busy few months, with many call outs. Our crews worked hard and were able to provide their usual high level of service. Our team also has been deployed over the Region assisting with emergencies. Two new members have completed training in the use of four wheel drive vehicles. We also have another four members undertaking training in boat operations. It’s great to see that we are attracting new members and we would like to see many more joining up as active members of the Loch Sport Team. We have a great following on Facebook (SES Loch Sport) with many followers who like to see what we have been up to, so follow us on Facebook and be kept informed. Feel free to call in to see our set-up and ask any questions. Please remember that the bulk of our funding is mainly made up of all the fundraising efforts that the members take part in, so when you do see us at a function please donate to ensure that our services can be maintained to a high level. I thank the Loch Sport Community for all the support and appreciation they have shown to their local SES Unit. I also would like to thank those members of the community who have now displayed their house number outside their properties and if others who have not already done so, could please do so, as this saves all emergency services a lot of time in locating your property if assistance is required. It’s great that our Unit is now able to host a number of training sessions and it also is an opportunity for us to showcase our beautiful town to those members who have not visited the area before. If you belong to a group who would like to invite us to talk about what services we provide, and also the emergency services kit, then please give us a call and we would be pleased to attend one of your sessions. The number of visitors to our town will expand over the Easter period, so please take care and drive safely and watch out for the many animals that also share our roads. !""#$%&'(%()*+,-,(.,/.)+0#$+1)'%$).('2+-#.&'%))$+ Terry Ford SES Unit Controller Loch Sport. 3#$2+,%+4#56+7"#$%+1#88&'(%9+:#&*) 1,..+;<=>+?@AB+<@A?+#$+C8,(.+.*56D')%*",5)E')%E,&

PARK HAPPENINGS

As part of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s (DELWP) strategic fire break maintenance program, funding has been allocated or a budget exists for maintaining the breaks in the area as well as upgrading Lake Reeve Track in the Lakes National Park between April and September. The planned works are aligned to a larger road maintenance package between DELWP and Parks Victoria which is linked to the Reducing Bushfire Risk (RBR) program led by DELWP.

Works in the Coastal Park and The Lakes National Park include:

• Roadside vegetation clearing

• Fire break vegetation maintenance

• Road surface grading and gravel replacement

• Implementation of planned burns (conditions permitting).

Parks Victoria and DELWP staff have already completed slashing the network of vehicle tracks and firebreaks within The Lakes National Park and Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park. Our next focus is on elevated and encroaching vegetation maintenance before road surface maintenance can begin.

We all have a story to tell! By Rhonda Luttrell

When Kevin and I first visited Loch Sport on the Australia Day Weekend of 2013, we fell in love with the lake views and easy access to the beach, as well as the access to the National Park and Coastal parks. Everything fell into place for us, and we could see ourselves living here. By March we purchased our home in Goodlett Avenue, and began to make plans to move in permanently, which we did on New Years Eve of that same year. We commenced our time here busy with family visiting us, who were curious as to why their parents purchased a house in a place they had not previously heard about. They too enjoyed the water activities and bush drives as we did, and the family approved of “their holiday house”.

We were only in semi-retirement, but we settled into Loch Sport life, embracing opportunities to develop our garden, take walks and trips into the National Park, utilising the four-wheel drive tracks. We explored the surrounds, and enjoyed taking time to get to know the people in Loch Sport. However, this was only to last 18 months, because opportunities for work opened up quite unexpectedly in Melbourne, and we moved there for three years. All the time we kept our home here set up and used it for holiday breaks and for family and friends to use. When our time in Melbourne was finished, we knew there was only one place we wanted to get back to, and we made our second WELLINGTON LIBRARY move permanently to Loch Sport nearly three years ago. The epic adventure all began 42 years ago when Dave and Betty Ryan accepted a kind offer from a friend to treat their family to a weekend away to their holiday home.

After a long journey through single laned dirt roads, they finally reached their destination, the tiny lakeside town of Loch Sport. After a weekend of swimming, fishing and shell collecting, it was obvious that this little place was a perfect respite from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne life.

David (telling his family that he was only popping out to buy milk) came back with a large grin and happily announced that they too were now proud owners of their own holiday home of which they still enjoy today.

As time went by and with each family member and friend that were invited down to take a break, they too fell in love with this quaint little town and soon bought property of their own, including grandparents, Ivy and Fred Hansford.

Back in those days, all roads were dirt, there was no bakery, pub or shops apart from the small milk bar open for a few hours on the weekend, stocking only bare essentials. But the ever increasing clan of the Ryan and Hansford kids did not mind as their time was consumed with freedoms and activities that you could not do in a big city, like swimming, water skiing, boating and fishing. Feeding the kangaroos was always a highlight of the kids and not to mention the endless buckets of shells retrieved from the Ninety Mile Beach which occupied numerous hours of craft time for the kids when the weather was not good enough to swim. A pass time that is still enjoyed by the great grandkids even today. I don’t think that there would be a house in Loch Sport that does not have a homemade shell ornament adorning their shelves. The serenity of the place kept them all coming back though, not even the mozzies could keep them away.

Looking back now they can proudly say that 5 generations of their family have come to know this place as a home away from home. Along with their 2 daughters, 3 granddaughters and 2 great grand kids, they still enjoy their Loch Sport family time together.

With each generation Loch Sport has grown with them now offering more to do than ever before with new upgraded park facilities, shops and entertainment with Lake Victoria not only still home to the swimmers, sandcastle builders, boaters and water skiers but also accommodating for the new generations toys, like the jet skis. J & L Home Maintenance & Fencing Loch Sport continues to put smiles on all of their faces and hopefully will do for so for generations to come.

LOCHSPORT FISHING ASSOCIATION INCORPORATED Ninety Mile Beach:

Summer such as it was, has been and gone. Recreational fishermen made the most of the warmer weather Wind and heavy seas have been making fishing along the 90 Mile Beach rather difficult however we expect the over the holiday period and have enjoyed some pleasant fishing trips out on the lakes and down on the surf gutter to be well formed when the weather conditions ease. For the more determined fishermen, salmon and beach - it has been terrific to see so many fishermen out on the water. good flathead are still around and a few gummy sharks have been taken from wider out especially at night. The best baits for all species continue to be pilchard, blue bait and blue & silver poppers. The exciting news has been the wonderful catches of King George whiting in Lake Victoria since Christmas – top quality whiting have been in abundance, something the seasoned local fishermen say has not happened for Lakes & Rivers: 20 years or more. It seems that since the last of the commercial netters ceased operations in April last year, the sea grass beds have begun to rejuvenate all around the lakes and this of course, is the whiting’s preferred None of the 5 tagged black bream released into the lake at Loch Sport just before Christmas have been caught habitat. Equally exciting, is the number of juvenile whiting being caught and released – while many whiting so there is still “money in them there lakes”. come into the lakes to breed and then return to the ocean, many become resident and all indications are that The most exciting news is the number of prime quality KG whiting being caught at several spots on Lake the whiting are here to stay. Victoria (including towards Loch Sport). The sea grass beds appear to be flourishing in several areas so look for an area of healthy grass with sand patches in between – use pipis or mussels to catch a meal of these top th The inaugural Ladies “Learn to fish” Day” held on Saturday 20 February was a fantastic day. Jenny Allitt from class eating fish. Fishcare Victoria came along to run the educational sessions covering all aspects of recreational fishing, for both Some very good black bream are being caught close to the river mouths or upstream in the Tambo, Nicholson new and experienced fisher folk. Thirty local ladies were very appreciative of Jenny’s presentation and then spent and Mitchell rivers in particular mainly on vibe lures or peeled prawns. And the late mail is that there are large an hour practicing their casting skills with some help from LSFA members. Judy Harley organised the day and schools of Eastern King Prawns at spots all around the lakes, many of which are in the 60gm range, very big everyone went home with a fishing “Glam Bag” full of goodies. As soon as the current wild, windy & wet weather for a prawn. So all we need now is few calm days before we go and get some dinner. calms down a bit, Judy will be organising some fishing sessions down on the 90 Mile Beach so the ladies can have a real fishing experience.

We then held a night fishing event on the 90 Mile Beach at Loch Sport. With the beach lit up with a bank of searchlights, the beach at night looked spectacular and with the BBQ fired up, it was a very enjoyable experience for the hundred or more keen fishos who participated. LSFA donated two surf fishing combos as prizes, one of which went to Jarred Conyers for his 34cm flathead and the other went to Danny Hilleson for her meritorious efforts. It was an experience not to be missed and will be on again next year.

The next event is the Annual Kid’s Fishing Experience Day on Saturday 10th April (the middle weekend of the Easter school holidays). The 2020 event had to be postponed firstly due to the bush fires and was ultimately cancelled due to COVID so we are back up and running with Fishcare Victoria coming again to run the educational sessions for the kids. We are also hopeful that some of the local agencies will take part, such as the SES, Gippsland Ports, Paynesville Coastguard, etc. The Victoria Fisheries Authority and VR Fish have already provided material for the show bags and LSFA will be putting on a BBQ for all who attend. So make this a big day out for the kids on the lake beach in front of the Lakeview Bar & Bistro starting at 10.00am.

LSFA members were invited to attend a function recently at Metung to celebrate the first release of dusky flathead under the stocking program being managed by Victoria Fisheries Authority as part of the “Gippsland Lakes Fishery Recovery Plan”. This plan was announced earlier this year by the Minister for Fishing & Boating, the Hon Melissa Horne and the release of 165,000 fingerlings into the Gippsland Lakes is very exciting news LSFA members call in at the release event on their for all recreational fishermen and will no doubt lead to a significant increase in fishing-driven tourism into the way to Lakes Entrance to support the local traders Lakes region.

Following this event, 28 LSFA members in 10 boats travelled on to Lakes Entrance for a very enjoyable fishing weekend, as we also did last year, to support the Lakes Entrance businesses who are still doing it tough after the January 2020 bushfires and then the COVID restrictions that have adversely impacted the tourism sector operators. In the meantime, keep in touch with the latest local fishing news and updated event details via the Facebook page “Loch Sport Fishing Association” or via our website www.lochsportfishingassociation.com, which also now has the link to the new beach webcam and weather station. This system has been running in test mode for several months and now that formal agreement has been reached with Parks Victoria and the traditional owners, it will be installed down on the 90 Mile Beach and switched on.

Minister Horne releasing fingerlings with VFA Scientist Brett Ingram, LSFA Secretary Craig Holland, Frank Milito from Aquaculture and VFA staff.
