UAlbany Athletics The University at Albany athletics program continued its success in the 2005-06 athletic year. With momentum from the 2004-05 Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner's Cup, which recognizes the stron- gest athletic program in the , the Great Danes captured five conference championships, two regular-season championships, and saw numerous student-athletes garner indi- vidual accolades, including five All-America honorees. UAlbany won America East championships in men's , men's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's outdoor track & field, and . In addition, the Great Danes were runners-up in women's indoor track & field and men's . and men's basketball also won confer- ence regular-season titles, led by America East Conference Player of the Years and All-Americans Blair Buchanan and , respectively. In addition, men's basketball captured its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth, becoming the first SUNY Division I team to accomplish that feat. Building on the mantra "Why not us?" the Great Danes nearly became the first 16-seed to topple a one-seed when they faced the University of . Softball became the first women's program to make back-to-back trips to NCAA post-season play, while Gered Burns, Joe Greene and Marc Pallozzi became the first Division I track & field All-Ameri- cans for the Great Danes. UAlbany sponsors 19 NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic programs, with 18 teams competing in the America East Conference. Football, a Division I-AA program, has been an associate member of the since 1999.

UAlbany Women’s Tennis  HEAD COACH/MEET THE GREAT DANES

Head Coach Elissa Kinard

Elissa Kinard was hired as the University at Albany’s tennis coach on August 1, 2006.

Previously, Kinard had worked for one year at Washington State, a program that was ranked sixth in the Northwest Region, produced a dual-match victory over Pacific-10 Conference rival Washington and had a student-athlete ranked No. 66 nationally in singles play. Her responsibilities included assisting in all stages of recruiting, organizing travel, monitoring the team’s academic program, as well as on-court instruction.

Prior to her arrival on the WSU campus, Kinard served as ’s assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach. She was also an assistant at American University during the 2004-05 academic year.

Kinard, 24, began her collegiate playing career at the University of Nebraska in the fall of 2000, where she fin- ished as the runner-up in singles as a freshman. Following her sophomore campaign, Kinard transferred to Virginia Tech. She was a standout doubles competitor for the Hokies, ranking as high as No. 2 in the East Region and No. 31 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

A native of Charleston, S.C., Kinard earned a B.S. in sociology and a master’s degree in health promotions from Virginia Tech. As a scholastic athlete, she was named the South Carolina Player of the Year on four occasions and won four state championship titles.

America East enters its 19th year of all-sports championship competition on the heels of one of the most successful seasons in history as four of its 10 team sport champions won at least one game in the NCAA Championship.

Academic Success…

America East institutions boasted eight Academic All-Americans in 2005-06 while another 30 were named All- District. More then 1,800 of America East’s 3,500 student-athletes were named to the Academic Honor Roll after receiving grade-point averages of 3.0 or better. Included in that total were 757 student-athletes who earned a 3.5 or better.
