The Riverlink project seeks to rekindle the love affair between a town and the river that was once its focus and its life force. The existing long continuous street wall, following the gentle curve of the river, is filled with high quality, yet tired, architectural gems. An elegant two storey portal building now breaks the solidity of this streetscape and gently leads the township through the aperture to the river, inviting solo contemplation, community congregation and civic celebration. The accommodation of public amenities, café and elevated restaurant space are cleverly contained within angled walls, which extend from fine, softly rounded edges at either side to a deep triangulated belly in the centre. This technique of expansion and contraction using flat surfaces is continued with the ceiling and floor planes, distorting and sculpting the central void in response to views inwards and outwards from the space. Standard materials of face brick and timber sit comfortably within the surroundings but are both elevated to a refinement and level of elegance rarely seen in public buildings. The colour, texture, pattern and rhythm of the material palette and fine detailing all contribute to the high quality architectural outcome. Human scale is considered throughout, with a deft approach to enclosure and connection, resulting in a delicate and appropriate insertion to announce Maitland’s renewal.

This is an exemplar project which showcases how architecture can reform the learning environment and enhance changing pedagogies; a project that changed the user’s lives for the better. The project is a big transformation with a minimal budget that delivers a contemporary library and plaza forecourt. The traditional formed library has been replaced with double height, light-filled spaces that enable students to readily access diverse learning settings. The new large welcoming plaza forecourt complements its surroundings and provides an impressive response to the existing landscape and built form, encouraging social interaction with a student-centred learning approach. Candalepas Associates’ project at North Rocks demonstrates a clever, strategic and considered approach to medium density living within a challenging urban environment. Fronting a major arterial road to the south, the building successfully mitigates its impacts by orientating north to the neighbouring park, river and school. This clear and legible urban response offers occupants a place of calm retreat, as well as a dynamic urban street presence. The buildings themselves appear robust and uncomplicated in form, engineering and materiality. However, a deeper interrogation reveals a rhythm of carefully refined facades creating a sense of playfulness in form, light and shadow. Thoughtfully planned apartments provide consistent and uncompromised internal amenity throughout, with careful attention placed on embedding passive systems of sustainable building design. Material selections have been chosen for their longevity and their ability for rigorous detailing within budget constraints. The result is a highly nuanced and unapologetic architectural response to a difficult urban setting, providing both quality apartments for its residents as well as a valuable and highly considered contribution to the locale.

Inspired by the original elegantly proportioned 1950s modernist building, 2 Bligh Street brings new life to a long- forgotten office tower. In an era that favours novelty, 2 Bligh Street stands out for promoting the value of recycling and re-use. The building is a fine example of sustainable practice, modest at heart but intelligent and unpretentious. There has been a restraint in the reinvention of this structure that has allowed a simple and elegant building to arise out of the heavy architectural overlays it received in the 1980s. The cast glass dichroic column cladding is just the right amount of materiality to add excitement to the facade by capturing and radiating light depending on the time of day.

The Rail Operations Centre is a piece of critical infrastructure wrapped by a red brick skin referencing Alexandria’s warehouse history. The architecture of the building celebrates its program in the way iconic buildings related to rail infrastructure have in the past. Many of the building’s key elements are driven by highly functional requirements: large spans, filtered light, and high security and design redundancy, all which have been cleverly resolved and integrated in the base building design. The Rail Operations Centre is an example of how demanding and prescriptive design briefs can be tested and refined to deliver beautiful architecture.

This house in Darlinghurst by Tribe Studio is a shining example of adaptive reuse. Consisting of a transformation of a former electrical substation built in the 1930s, it is located in what was once an area of tiny terrace houses and industrial warehouses. The adaptation into a three storey compact home is a celebration of light – natural and artificial – through the skilfully detailed brick brise-soleils and metal screens inserted in new openings, through a light shaft in the stairs and venetian glass bricks crowning the top of the substation walls. The original solid brick structure has been gently and lovingly opened up to relate to a more liveable post-industrial Darlinghurst, with its trees and safer laneways. It appears as if this past century workhorse building has been sanctified with a sparkling crystal roof extension, an aureole that softly dissolves in the sky. Inside, the original roof has been replaced with a new concrete slab that hovers over slender pairs of steel columns, exposing a clerestory of glass bricks in the upper part of the living floor and washes down the original white-washed bricks. Tribe Studio has achieved a successful repurposing of a redundant industrial structure into a finely crafted home. Long life to it.

This project converted a 1930s non- descript brick warehouse building on an irregular city block into a hotel where additions to the original brick structure are covered by a richly ornamented copper screen. No two hotel rooms are the same: each has varying orientations, character and scale. Each has also been designed to include an outdoor area behind the pierced screen. The patina of the original warehouse structure contrasts with the ornamentation of the new elements while the new screen adds to the urban fabric with carefully scaled ornament and delight.

Balmain Rock is commended for its masterful introduction of natural light into a narrow urban site through a series of skylights, lightwells, courtyards and voids. A single lightwell that traces the form of the original 1860s sandstone cottage’s hipped roof illuminates beautifully the interior of the textured walls to great effect, providing a dramatic entry and hospitable living space. Opening onto a newly created garden courtyard, the cottage is separated from a duplicated contemporary concrete pavilion at the rear whose presence from the street is recessive behind the original dwelling. The Green Square Library is a light-filled subterranean interior environment that is both calm and vibrant. The entrance is no longer a library but a café that enlivens Green Square and transitions from above to below. The open access which allows users to move through and out the building proves that libraries are quickly evolving and becoming an integral part of a city’s social infrastructure. The success of the interiors is in many parts; the open floor plan configured as a series of learning villages that accommodate the needs of different users. This is an inclusive interior where visitors are provided with a choice in how they inhabit the building. The use of primary shapes – circles, triangles and square – repeats throughout the form. The joinery, bathrooms and light fittings bring the spaces together and unify the library as a whole. It is immediately obvious that this library is loved by its staff and the wider community. Even with surrounding residential buildings yet to emerge, this building is already is providing the Green Square community a vibrant heart.

The interior of Castle Cove House is a true collaboration between client, architect, interior designer and craftsman. Its interior form is inseparable from the architecture, perfectly designed to suit the lives of the people who inhabit it. The personality of the client is evident in the selection of finishes, furniture and lighting, which adds another level of richness turning an otherwise concrete interior into a spectacular, unique and welcoming home. The clever layout, pinned at each end by the bedrooms, allows the central living spaces to open out to the views. The form of the architecture also embraces this. With its exposed, large section structural steel members throughout the library building and plaza forecourt, this project is a celebration of strength, structure, and the large open spaces these make possible. Contributing to this aesthetic and functional statement is the roofing system made from COLORBOND® steel in the Fielders ARAMAX® FreeSpan profile across the library complex’s built forms. This profile supports large span internal spaces as well as extended roof overhangs to provide protection to the building and the circulation paths around the library and into the surrounding formed landscape. The large COLORBOND® steel fly-roof over the plaza also enables a generous, uninterrupted connection with the three adjacent building entries. Additionally, in form and material the roofline makes welcome and meaningful reference to the industrial history of the Newcastle region. This is a robust, cohesively detailed project making exemplary use of steel for aesthetic and structural advantage and has achieved design excellence within a constrained budget.
