2018 Annual Report on Content and Service to the Community 1 EDUCATE As a natural extension of our quality children’s programming, the Early Learning department provides training for preschool and early childhood educators so that the children in their care can start school “ready to learn.” The Educational Resource Center (ERC) staff provide professional development training to area K-12 educators – we make better teachers! ERC Professional Development and Special Projects The ERC offered professional development to more than 6,139 educators in professional development, including Invention Literacy with MakeyMakey, intercultural trainings, Google Classroom, project-based learning, and more!

WGTE became a Future Ready Schools® affiliate and worked with the Department of Education to ensure that all schools and students are future ready. Future Ready Schools® helps district leaders plan and implement personalized, research-based digital learning strategies so all students can achieve their full potential. We believe every student deserves a rigorous, personalized learning environment filled with caring adults that enables students Early Learning to take ownership of their learning. Early literacy is one of the main tenants of engagement efforts at WGTE. Entrants in the annual Share a Story Contest more than quadrupled this year to 64 total entries. Participants, ages 4 to 11, wrote and illustrated their own original stories. WGTE FM 91 produced 50 new episodes of “The Rough Draft Diaries with Haley Taylor,” an ongoing short-form radio program/ podcast that explores the social and cultural fabric of our community, while uncovering personal stories and experiences that resonate globally. This year RDD also produced 4 video segments to complement the series and marked its 100th episode by hosting a community celebration.

WGTE’s nationally and internationally syndicated radio program, “Living American Composers: New Music from Bowling Green,” entered its fifth season. Since its launch in 2013, the program, in collaboration with the College of Musical Arts at Bowling Green State University, has reached 2 million listeners on 165 stations.

More than 3,608 people attended more than 57 WGTE outreach Great British Baking Show events that showcased or provided sneak peeks of new local and national television productions. Cupcake Battle WGTE celebrated 15 years of our most popular series, Toledo Stories, with a look back at some of our favorites in “Toledo Stories – A Retrospective.” This special looked at the iconic institutions, people, cultures, and neighborhoods that make our region an interesting place in which to work and live.

Every year, as part of our holiday tradition, WGTE airs outstanding local and national holiday performances. This year, WGTE aired two new locally produced programs: “Masterworks Chorale: Radiant Midnight” and “Toledo Jazz Orchestra Holiday Concert.” WGTE Public Media is pleased to partner with and support our cultural gems.

2018 Annual Report on Content and Service to the Community 5 EMPOWER WGTE Public Media provides the tools and information that enable the community to take action and influence change.

WGTE produced 25 minutes of footage on local conservation efforts in conjunction with a special event and documentary release of the national PBS special, “Rare: Creatures of the Photo Ark.” WGTE received a grant from WGBH to host the event and share local mini documentaries about conservation activities that are occurring in our own backyard.

WGTE partnered with the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the University of Toledo to produce a live television town hall – “Detecting Invasive Species in the Great Lakes,” which helped the community to learn more about preventing invasive species from harming the environment.

WGTE Educational Resource Center introduced a new free professional development series, Fighting Fake News. Educators were taught with the help of free resources from PBS and other sources how to arm their students in the battle against “fake news.” Educators learned how to teach students to be critical consumers of information that they find online and in the media.

WGTE brought the ProMedica Summer Concert winners of “Sunday Baroque” host Suzanne Bona (flute), Series with The Toledo Symphony Orchestra to life Tower Brass Quintet, student ensembles from BGSU, by simulcasting the free, outdoor summer concerts and the cast of Toledo ’s “The Pearl Fishers.” series on large screens in Promenade Park. The season included national acts such as Crystal Bowersox and WGTE produced 38 new episodes of “Classical Caly Bevier, Steve Tyrell, and a Prince tribute concert. Conversations,” a radio segment/podcast that features conversations with local and international classical WGTE created, broadcasted and streamed 8 new musicians.
