February/March 2012 ECJ 17 Request BIO-TECH products of the line Papernet Superior

NO MORE UNPLEASANT SMELLS: regular use of BIO-TECH products helps keep septic tanks and inspection chambers clean, reducing risks of foul smell coming from toilets. NO MORE CLOGS: thanks to BIO-TECH, the risk of deposits and clogs due to an excessive use of paper is substantially reduced.

NO MORE DREDGING: having clean septic tanks and inspection chambers means reducing dredging interventions and hence savings!

Papernet has the EUROPEAN EXCLUSIVE on the use of BATP technology. www.sofidel.it www.papernet.it "TOMORROW'S SUCCESS DEPENDS ON TODAY'S CHOICES" BATP®: NOW A COMPLETELY EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVE

BATP® L1700S - ‘Biologic Active Tissue Paper’ - is Italian technology at its best, it is exclusive and patented for the tissue paper market and is based on biological activation to biodegrade paper and organic substances.

The owner of the patent and registered trademark is BBA BIOTECH, an Italian company with its headquarters in Milan, alongside three key partners; Bianchi, Benedusi and Altheimer. For several years, this extraordinarily innovative, biologically active, toilet tissue paper has become omnipresent in the Italian market, where it has received wide approval by end-users in all key segment: hotels, camping grounds, hospitals, service stations, industries, wellness centers, etc. In 2006, before starting distribution (through agreement with Hercules Water Technologies, now Ashland Inc.), the BATP®L1700S product underwent a variety of vigorous tests in an external laboratory, accredited and authorized by the Ministry of Health. The results confirmed its status as being completely safe and devoid of any total toxicity, sensitisation potential as well as other undesired effects.

But what exactly is BATP®? BATP is an everyday product which combines rapid tissue decomposition properties with organic pollutants that eliminate unpleasant odors. This means that this highly innovative, complete-cycle product, cleans water as it is discharged from the toilet efficiently, through the drainages system and to its destination while minimizing blockages and stench. Exclusively, this Italian BATP® technology is protected by the worldwide patent for the EC countries, the Mediterranean basin, the United States, Canada, Latin America, Asia and Oceania. This excellent product is now set to target the European and international markets. To ensure focus on our wider market, beyond Italy and to ensure market growth, BBA BIOTECH has teamed up with the SOFIDEL Group; the Tuscan multinational company which is the second-largest European producer of tissue paper for hygienic and domestic use. It owns such brands as ‘Regina’, the European leader in kitchen, and personal hygiene paper products. This includes Papernet, the newly-launched brand on the AFH market.

Transfer from Ashland Inc. (distributor of BATP® under the name "Dimension L1700S Converting Additive" until 2011) to the SOFIDEL Group was ratified by BBA BIOTECH's decision not to renew the contract with Ashland, and was motivated by the need to broaden the distribution of the solutions proposed on a European level. Solutions which, in the 5 years of presence on the Italian market, met with the appreciation of important customers, whom BBA BIOTECH would today like to thank. In particular, the journey undertaken with Cartiera Lucchese (with BioActive - Lucart ) was promising and mutually satisfying right from the start (Pulire 2007 Innovation Award), and attracted the increasing interest of the industry and the market - something which the Sofidel Group wants to pursue and strengthen.

As Lorenzo Altheimer, Technical Director of BBA BIOTECH underscores: "The knowledge of the market, the level of product innovation and quality, the excellence of the production cycle and the capacity for development and valorization of the resources of the SOFIDEL Group make it an ideal partner for the applications of BATP® technology (new and interesting projects are currently being studied) and for the diffusion of the product to new markets." Ecodesign is minimis- ing a product’s environmental burdens right from the design phase, ready for its entire life cycle. Environmental burdens are not just shifted from one life cycle phase to another. Ecodesign is central to product sustain- ability. With the public’s rising interest in sustainability, companies now realise they have to take care of the environmental bur- dens of their products, long after they leave the company gate. Raising the company image – a precious good in present times – is a major driver behind environmental product optimisation today. Another important driver is customer sustainability criteria. However, not just end users but rather big retailers are the main drivers - especially in the consumer goods sector. They have already defined their own sustainability criteria for the products they deal with. Ecodesign approaches must also cater to these requirements.
