'I FAU Free Press · July 19, . 95 Nuclear Age Reaches Mid-Life Crisis Fifty years ago this last Monday, the nuclear age dawned with the first ntC? mic bomb test at Trinity Site, New Mexico. In fifty years the world has drawn nearly unanimous conclusions: nuclear weapons will never serve a sane purpose; the fission process is extremely dangerous to the health and safety of all known li fe fo rms; there would be no winners of a nuclear war -only losers. International agreements regarding the li mitations of nuclear testing have widened in scope over the last thirty yea rs, and enforcement mechanisms have grown the teeth necessa ry to compel compliance. The primary rationale for declaring war in the 1990's has been to deter nations from obtaining nuclear wea pons. This rationale was used to justify the Persian Gul f War as well as last year's th reats of war with Korea. Essentially, the nuclear club has, for the most part, decided to get off the death trip. Nevertheless, there are still some nut cases who resist all world efforts to curb the development of nuclear weapons systems and their contin ued testing. France plans to explode eight nuclear devices in the South Pacific between September of this year and next May. This week, under the leadership of Conservative President Jacques Chi rac, France violently reaffirmed its commi tment to the extension of the nuclear arms race. Madison Social has an excellent model. This will normalize masks before kids go back to school and students return to the universities. I would also ask that we set guidelines so that enforcement of this issue is equitable. Certain people should not be policed more than others, and a face mask made as excuse to further put law enforcement pressures on certain citizens more than others. With the climate we’re experiencing now, I’m sure you understand my meaning. “In an age of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” – George Orwell Confessions of an Eco-Terrorist is a feature documentary that reveals the true 30-year odyssey of the most wanted environmentalist in the world today. Captain Paul Watson is hailed as a rebel, rogue and anarchist and has recently emerged as the modern day cult hero of Animal Planet’s critically acclaimed “Whale Wars.” But long before those wars, Watson fought his own personal battle. A REPORTER AT LARGE NEPTUNE’S NAVY Paul Watson’s wild crusade to save the oceans. by Raffi Khatchadourian NOVEMBER 5, 2007 Watson, the founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a vigilante organization that was founded thirty years ago, with one of its ships, the Farley Mowat, a trawler that has nearly sunk three times. Photograph by James Nachtwey. ne afternoon last winter, two ships lined up side by side in a field of pack ice at the mouth of the Ross Sea, off O the coast of Antarctica. They belonged to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a vigilante organization founded by Paul Watson, thirty years ago, to protect the world’s marine life from the destructive habits and the voracious appetites of humankind. Watson and a crew of fifty-two volunteers had sailed the ships—the Farley Mowat, from Australia, and the Robert Hunter, from Scotland—to the Ross Sea with the intention of saving whales in one of their principal habitats. A century ago, when Ernest Shackleton and his crew sailed into the Ross Sea, they discovered so many whales “spouting all around” that they named part of it the Bay of Whales. (“A veritable playground for these monsters,” Shackleton wrote.) During much of the twentieth century, though, whales were intensively hunted in the area, and a Japanese fleet still sails into Antarctic waters every winter to catch minke whales and endangered fin whales. Watson believes in coercive conservation, and for several decades he has been using his private navy to ram whaling and fishing vessels on the high seas.
