The Haywood NEWS WINTER 2017 Royal Reading Reward On Tuesday 28th November, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall visited Stoke-on-Trent to celebrate the work of the National Literacy Trust Hub with school children from across the city. Thirty Year 7 students from Haywood Academy were lucky enough to be invited to this event at the Stoke City football stadium.

Authors Liz Pichon (writer of the Tom Gates series); Andy Stanton; Bali Rai and Dom Berry entertained the students before The Duchess of Cornwall joined them. Her Royal Highness presented a series of awards to students who are enthusiastic and improving readers, including Siyamak Fatah from Haywood.

As a reward for winning the Autonet creative writing competition, which Haywood Academy participated in earlier in the term, student Lyla Clarke was chosen to meet the Duchess of Cornwall. Lyla was excited to present the Duchess with an engagement card for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, on behalf of the people of Stoke-on-Trent. ARTISTIC TALENT on display Over the summer, GCSE and A level students successfully had their work selected for the Three Counties Exhibition, which took place at School of Art. Students and their families attended the preview night, seeing their work exhibited for the first time, alongside that of established artists from across Staffordshire, Cheshire and Shropshire. Inspiration was taken from a wide range of subjects, from animals to robotics, and the standard of artwork was excellent, demonstrating mature artist skills using a wide range of media. Mr Bebbington also shared with students how to work to deadlines, as well as travel opportunities, financial rewards and competition around designing for industry.

My end goal after high school is to try and make it into university so I can study architecture at a high level and try to get a master’s degree in it so that I can make it in the business.

All students in Years 8 to 10 participated in an exciting competition, which began on National Poetry Day. Paige Ellis The Poetry Day theme was freedom, so all students began by exploring this concept and considering why it is so important. Students then used Lucy Maxwell their ideas as a basis for writing their own poems. The only limitation that they had was the theme. Students showcased their poems, each form picked their top three entries and these were put forward for judging.

The winners will become ‘Poet Laureate’ for their year group; be invited to VIP literacy events in school throughout the year; be supported to enter the National Poetry Competition and will also receive a Potteries Centre shopping voucher. LIBRARY LEADERS A group of Year 8 and 9 students have been selected as this year’s Library Leaders. The students chosen all show a great enthusiasm for a range of reading and many have already taken part in literacy events at the Academy. Library Leaders have a vital role in helping other students to use the library effectively, strengthen their literacy and catch the ‘book buzz’.

Students at Haywood have enjoyed successful and engaging PSHE Days this term. There were PSHE Day opportunities to engage in a wide range of topical issues, and they had the chance to take part in high quality workshops provided by external agencies.

Year 7 had external speakers highlighting the importance of maintaining a safe online presence, clearly a vital aspect of a young person’s life in the 21st century. Year 7 also benefited from a fire safety assembly, Growth Mindset, bullying, democracy and self-worth.

The PE department worked with Y8 on sport and fitness, as well as Growth Mindset, online safety and self-worth, while Year 9 received drug awareness lessons from Haywood staff who had given up their own time to attend a session with the lead for drug education at Stoke-on-Trent City Council. In addition, they also investigated how to deal with stress, Growth Mindset and self-image.

Year 10 and 11 had a focused day considering their future, looking at personal statements in readiness to applying for college, career opportunities, dealing with stress and positive self-image. The NHS also delivered a bespoke programme on sex and relationships to Year 11. THE HAYWOOD NEWS 3 Youth Parliament

On 10th November, three Year 11 students Dates attended the Youth Parliament meeting at the King’s Hall. The aim of the meeting was to gather for the secondary students from throughout the City to discuss topics around the theme of Stoke’s bid to be City of Culture. There was then a diary secret ballot to decide on the topic that would be carried forward to represent the voice of the students. ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE Year 13 and Year 11 had the opportunity to see professional pieces of theatre this term. Year 13 went to Chester to see the physical and emotional performance of Things I Know to be True by the excellent theatre group Frantic Assembly. The group use movements to explore relationships and emotions. Year 13 now feel fully prepared for their written exam in January. Year 11 enjoyed the New Vic’s Treasure Island, especially the exciting set in the round. Some students had never experienced live theatre before and were completely immersed into the swashbuckling adventure. Some students are even looking at going to see it again to prepare themselves for their written exam in June. The students now have to evaluate the use of set, lighting, costume etc. upon the audience. Both groups thoroughly enjoyed seeing a piece of live theatre, and now have high expectations to be in performances like these themselves in the future. THE HAYWOOD NEWS 5 Putting in the hours
