United States Forest Service Outreach Notice Region 2 - Pike and San Isabel National Forests- Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands Pikes Peak Ranger District GS-0462-05/07 Forestry Technician (Timber Sale Prep) POSITION: The Pike National Forest, Pikes Peak Ranger District is outreaching for a Forestry Technician (TSP), GS-0462-05/07 position. Duty station is Woodland Park, Colorado. This is a permanent, full-time position. Opportunity Type: We may soon be looking to fill this position permanently and are outreaching this position to identify prospective applicants. INTRODUCTION This position is established at the Ranger District level to perform timber sale preparation duties including, timber marking, timber cruising, and sale layout. MAJOR DUTIES Interprets complex silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber. Brings to the attention of responsible individuals situations on the ground which are inconsistent with the prescription or marking guide. Develops and drafts timber cruise plans. Applies instructions issued in a cruise plan. Provides field instruction to apprentice cruisers in fundamental timber measuring practices, cruise methods, and techniques. Must become Cruiser Certified within one year and maintain Cruiser Certification annually. Interprets computer output reports, tables, and statistics to provide quantity and quality estimates of timber products. Lays out timber sale boundaries in accordance with environmental assessments and other instruction, considering factors such as transportation system, topography, fuels management, silvicultural objectives, wildlife needs, stream protection and other related resource considerations. Determines acreage by map or aerial photograph methods, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), or Global Positioning System (GPS). Writes reports describing timber sale, resource, topographic features, and compliance of timber marking with guidelines. Interprets aerial photographs for information such as road locations, sale boundaries, survey monuments, and other features. Drafts sale area maps using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) data. Updates planned and completed project activity information in the Forest Activity reporting database (FACTS) and assists with updates to spatial GIS information related to projects prepared. Provides technical assistance to specialists in the development of complex logging plans and preliminary road location. Performs other multifunctional work, as assigned, in other areas of resource management such as wildlife, recreation, visuals, resource planning, and fire management. ABOUT THE FOREST/DISTRICT: The Pike-San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands are located in southeastern Colorado. These Forests and Grasslands have eight Ranger Districts. Forest Ranger Districts are: Leadville located in Leadville, Salida in Salida, San Carlos in Canon City, Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, South Park in Fairplay and South Platte in Morrison. Grassland Ranger Districts are: Comanche located in Springfield and LaJunta, Colorado and Cimarron Ranger District located in Elkhart, Kansas. The Supervisor’s Office is located in Pueblo, Colorado.The Forests have a complexity of resources including range, timber, wildlife, water, wilderness areas, developed and dispersed recreation, etc. The Forest is considered an urban forest with extensive WUI. LOCATION: Woodland Park, CO Elevation: 8,500 feet. Population: 6,660. Woodland Park is located in Teller County, which has a population of approximately 21,660. Nearest Large Towns: Colorado Springs is 18 miles east of Woodland Park on Hwy 24, with a population close to 500,000 and is the second largest city in Colorado; Denver is located 60 miles North of Colorado Springs, and Pueblo is located 45 miles South of Colorado Springs. Other nearby towns in Teller County includes Cripple Creek and Divide. Climate: Average annual precipitation is about 15 inches; average annual snowfall is about 40 inches a year. Average summer high temperature is about 85º; winter high temperature is about 40º. Housing Availability: Government housing is not available. Rentals are available in Woodland Park as well as Colorado Springs ranging from $500 to $1,200. Houses are available in both Woodland Park and Colorado Springs as well. Houses usually start around $120,000 in Woodland Park and around 100,000 in Colorado Springs. Medical and Hospital Facilities: Pikes Peak Regional Hospital is located in Woodland Park with an emergency room on site. There are also many Doctors and Dentists to choose from in both Woodland Park and Colorado Springs. Schools/Colleges: There is one High School, one Middle School, and two Elementary Schools in Woodland Park. There are many areas to choose from in Colorado Springs with many different School districts as well as a few private schools. Pikes Peak Community College is located in Colorado Springs and there is one public university in Colorado Springs; The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, as well as one private college; Colorado College. Churches: Churches of various denominations are represented in the communities. Public Transportation: Commercial airlines fly out of Denver, Pueblo and Colorado Springs. There is a public bus system in Colorado Springs as well as a public system that runs between Colorado Springs and Woodland Park. There is also a bus system that runs between Colorado Springs and Denver. Recreation Facilities: Quality outdoor recreation opportunities exist on federal and state public lands, including lake and stream fishing, waterskiing, snow skiing, snowmobiling, both big and small game hunting, hiking, rock and mountain climbing, river rafting, mountain biking, and the viewing of fall colors. There are two Wilderness areas on the Pike National Forest; Lost Creek and Mt. Evans. Both provide trails to hike and backpack in on. Pikes Peak sits in the middle of the district and stands 14,110ft above sea level and offers extraordinary views of both the plains to the East and the mountains further to the West.
