[email protected] has appointed Mark Sampson as the new Head Coach of the England Senior Women's Team. Sampson has signed a four-year contract with the FA and will begin work with immediate effect, his first task to name a squad for the January training camp in La Manga. Reporting to the FA's Director of Football Development Sir Trevor Brooking and the Club England Board, Sampson will work closely with the national coaches and the new Head of Elite Women's Development at St George's Park to improve England teams at all levels and support the player pathway up to the Senior Women's team. Sampson said: "I'm very proud and honoured to be offered the opportunity by the Football Association to manage the England Women's senior team. Women's football in England is in a fantastic place right now with the growth and development of the game in the last few years and I am ready to give everything I have to build an England team that every English supporter can be proud of. "I am also very thankful to Brent [Hills] for the excellent work he has done in helping the team get off to a winning start in the qualifying campaign for the World Cup in 2015. The aim is to build on this momentum going forwards, and I look forward to the first training camp in January. "This is a huge challenge for me personally and one in which I'm looking forward to taking on. I hope everyone in the game can unite behind me and the squad and together we can share a new and exciting journey for women's football in England." Sir Trevor Brooking said of the appointment: "Mark is an outstanding manager with a tremendous passion and commitment to drive the game forward in this country. We were extremely impressed by Mark's vision for the England Women's team and we are all looking forward to working with him in what is a very exciting time for the women's game in this country. "I would also like to place on record the FA's thanks to Brent Hills who, as interim manager, oversaw an excellent start to our FIFA Women's World Cup qualification campaign." Sampson joins the FA after five successful years in charge at Bristol Academy WFC, leading the WSL club to two FA Women's Cup Finals and qualifying for Champions League football for the second time in its history. Sampson led Bristol to their highest top flight finish this year, finishing runners-up to Liverpool on the final day of the WSL season. Previous to his role at Bristol, Sampson worked under Roberto Martinez at Swansea City as the Centre of Excellence Manager. He took over the manager’s job at Bristol Academy in 2009 and initially had to oversee a difficult period due to the departure of a number of senior players. Academy finished bottom in the National Division in that opening season, which was the last time they played in the Premier League due to them becoming inaugural members of the newly formed FA WSL:. They finished fifth in the league’s first season and improved their final position in each of the following campaigns, culminating in their near-miss this year when they were one match away from a potential league title. [email protected] Northern Division Sheffield FC have opened up a seven point advantage at the head of the Northern Division following their 3-2 success away to Leeds Utd. It was Leeds who got off to a good start, taking a tenth minute lead through Danielle Whitham, but Sheffield hit back dramatically with three goals in a ten-minute spell. First Carla Ward equalised and then Issy Hayes and Jodie Michalska ensured that Helen Mitchell's side were two goals ahead with one quarter of the match played. Leeds gave themselves renewed hope when Carey Huegett pulled one back midway through the second half but Sheffield held on for the win and a commanding lead over their nearest rivals. Wolverhampton Wanderers meanwhile pulled off their best result of the season to date, winning 5-2 at Newcastle Utd to halve the gap on the teams immediately above them. Dani Selmes gave Wolves the lead on seventeen minutes but then Natalie Henderson and Beth Gardner both scored to put Newcastle in front. The game was turned on its head in the three minutes leading up to half time when Selmes restored Wolves' advantage by netting twice to complete her hat-trick. On the hour mark, Selmes found the net for a fourth time to increase her side's lead and then she turned provider to set up Jamillah Palmer for the final goal. Southern Division Gillingham saw their unbeaten start to the season come to an end as they were beaten 3-1 by Lewes. The Rookettes had been beaten by Chesham Utd seven days earlier but in an entertaining game at the Dripping Pan, they stunned the league leaders as Ashleigh Goddard gave them a fourth minute lead with Naomi Cole and Kelly Newton adding further goals after the break. Gillingham did not give up and after leading scorer Charlotte Gurr missed a penalty, Nikita Whinnett grabbed a late consolation. West Ham Utd meanwhile put an end to their worrying run of seven matches without a win by defeating Chesham Utd 3-1. Cherrelle Albert scored twice inside the opening fourteen minutes and after Dawne Campbell had given Chesham hope by pulling a goal back just after the hour, Becky Merritt secured the points for the Hammers late on. Premier League Cup Tottenham Hotspur ran out 4-2 winners over Brighton & Hove Albion in Group One on Sunday. The qualifiers had already been decided with Gillingham going through but goals from Wendy Martin (2), Kim Lane and Megan Wynne ensured that Spurs finished on a winning note, Brighton replying through Kirsty Barton and a Martin own goal. Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth completed the Group Two matches by battling out a 1-1 draw. Sam Pittuck opened the scoring for the Addicks after ten minutes with Charley Wilson levelling shortly before half time. Neither side could find a winner during the second half and it is Lewes who progressed to the last eight. Cardiff City Ladies clinched top spot in Group Three at the expense of Keynsham Town after beating them 4-0 in the group decider. The South Wales side were two ahead inside the opening ten minutes thanks to Sarah Wiltshire and Naomi Clipston, before Wiltshire went on to add two further goals after the break to complete her hat-trick and the victory. Coventry City took the honours in Group Four, requiring a three-goal margin of Derby County striker Natalie Reay and Coventry City’s Ashleigh Neville battle for the ball with Hayley Ladd watching on (www.jamesprickett.co.uk). [email protected] England 0 Italy 0 Italy won 4-3 on penalties England's hopes of playing in next year's FIFA Women's Under-17 World Cup came to an end in the cruellest of fashions as they were beaten in a penalty shootout at Burton. A place in the Finals was on offer for the winners of the third place play-off and with so much at stake, the game was a tense affair but England will look back at one moment in the second half when Sophie Stamp had a goal controversially disallowed for offside. The game started similarly to the sides' meeting in the group stages with Italy creating the early chances. Kirstie Levell was called into action when she saved from a Gloria Martinelli header and from the resulting corner, Martina Piemonte hooked her shot just wide. After a frenetic start, the game began to settle down and England began to take more possession with a slow, patient build up and Keira Walsh prompting in midfield alongside the hard working Mollie Rouse. England were finding it difficult to contain the skilful in midfield though and she attempted to thread a number of passes for the strikers to run on to. On two occasions, Gabrielle George came to her side's rescue with two perfectly timed tackles to prevent goalscoring chances, including one excellent intervention as Martinelli made her way into the area. The first half ended goalless but England thought they had made the breakthrough on 47 minutes as, following a corner, Walsh floated the ball into the area for Sophie Stamp to head firmly home but celebrations were quickly ruled out by an offside flag. The midfielder appeared to have made run from a deep position to the near post and the flag may have been raised against but the decision appeared to be a very harsh one. Italy were next to go close as Federica Cavicchia clipped an excellent pass into the path of Martinelli who bore down on goal but shot straight at Levell. Then, drove a teasing low centre across the England goal but failed to get a touch in front of goal. Lucy Porter had a shot saved and a Walsh effort was charged down whilst at the other end, Giugliano made a threatening run to the edge of the area where she curled her shot just wide. With penalties looming very large, both teams tried frantically to win the game in the last five minutes and play surged from end to end. England needed to withstand a number of late corners but defended superbly, led well once again by the inspirational Williamson, and goalkeeper Levell impressed once again with faultless handling. Despite a thrilling end to the match as the teams threw everything they could at each other, neither could make a breakthrough and the World Cup place was to be decided by the most unfair of methods. Alice Hassall tried to give England an early lead but her kick was saved by Francesca Durante, Lisa Boattin's shot went in off the post. Williamson and Giugliano confidently stroked home their kicks but then Durante produced a superb save from Kelly, tipping her shot onto the post. Martinelli tucked home the next to put Italy within one penalty of victory. Brogan McHugh needed to score to keep England alive and did so emphatically, then Levell saved from her counterpart Durante to give her side Lucy Porter holds off a challenge from Sara Mella hope. Walsh did what she had to do and scored to put (www.jamesprickett.co.uk). Lois Fidler reserved special praise for her England Under-17 side after they narrowly missed out on a World Cup place, labelling them the best team she has ever worked with. High praise indeed from a coach who has led a team to a World Cup semi final and seen several senior internationals move up from that level, but in the aftermath of their penalty shootout defeat to Italy in the UEFA Under-17 Championships third place play-off match, Lois said: "I have absolutely thoroughly enjoyed working with this team and I think Costa Rica will be a poorer place without an England side. "I've been doing this job for a long time and had the privilege of working with a large number of players who have gone on to be senior internationals, but I don't think I've ever been prouder of, in my opinion, the best team I've ever worked with. "The players have been fantastic, the staff have worked really hard and I've got nothing but high expectations for a number of these players moving on. "I think the players need to remember what it feels like in this situation - you've got the whole of your careers ahead of you - remember what it feels like to see the opposition celebrating like that because it will be useful to you. Hold your heads up high, to be proud and bounce back and live to fight another day." England captain Leah Williamson had a superb tournament and looks set to have an excellent future in the game. She reflected: "Congratulations to Italy, but we had our chances to win the game. It wasn't to be, though, and we've got to hold our heads high because we did deliver. "We played well. England teams always get stronger as the tournament goes on. A lot of us have said that this is the tightest team we've played in. "I'm just thankful to have had this opportunity and been part of it. It's proven to be a very valuable experience." Leah also thanked the supporters who turned up to cheer England on during their five matches. "The support has been phenomenal," she said. "The atmosphere in the first game was crazy and something these players have never experienced. "When you're performing on the pitch, you feel you're performing for them. It's been brilliant." [email protected] Derby County 0 Coventry City 4 Coventry City powered their way into the knockout stage of the Premier League Cup with a 4-0 away win over Derby County at Borrowash Victoria FC. This was the final match in the group which had opened with Coventry and Nottingham Forest battling out a goalless draw and then Forest had beaten Derby 3-1 in the second game, ruling the Rams out of the running and leaving Coventry needing to better this to be sure of going through. Needing a three-goal margin of victory to clinch first place in Group Four, the Sky Blues held a single goal advantage at half time, courtesy of a 26th minute Maz Gauntlett header from Helen Dermody's Natasha Hughes holds off Helen Dermody inswinging cross. (www.jamesprickett.co.uk). Gauntlett nearly added a second two minutes after the break but was denied by a good save from Rams keeper Sarah Morgan. The introduction of Destiney Toussaint proved the catalyst or the Sky Blues breakthrough as her first involvement provided a run and right wing cross which was volleyed home at the far post by Ashleigh Neville on 56 minutes. Coventry were in control and it seemed only a matter of time before the crucial goal came. Becky Anderson hit the bar with a long range effort but the third arrived from an interception of a wayward short goal kick. The ball was worked back into the area where Rams defenders twice blocked goal attempts before Dermody set up Anderson to rifle the loose ball home from 15 yards on 72 minutes. Derby threatened Sue Wood's goal on occasions and a single consolation effort would have allowed Nottingham Forest to top the group. The Coventry keeper was forced into one diving save, but Morgan was still much busier, making another good stop from a lofted Dermody effort high to her right. The final goal went fittingly to Dermody, who had been at the centre of the best Coventry pressure. Again, Derby defenders did well to block goal bound efforts but the Sky Blues forward was free to strike the loose ball left footed beyond Morgan's dive and into the roof of the net to ease any nerves. This was a comprehensive win for a powerful Coventry outfit over a hard working Derby team which struggled to contain the pace and variety of the visitors' attacking options. In the draw for the quarter finals, Coventry have been rewarded with a mouthwatering home tie against Southern Division leaders Gillingham. Nottingham Forest meanwhile will also take their place in the last eight as they qualify by virtue of being the best runners-up and they will play Preston North End. [email protected] Germany won the UEFA Women's Under-17 Championships for the fourth time when they beat Spain on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the Final at Chesterfield. The sides had met during the group stages with Spain winning 4-0 on that occasion and they got off to a great start when Patricia Guijarro gave them a ninth minute lead with a strike from just outside the area. Spain continued to dominate matters during the first half but the all-important second goal would not come. They came closest just before half time when a corner taken by Andrea Sanchez was flicked on by Nahikari Garcia and Mireya Garcia Boa volleyed wide at the far post. The pattern of the game continued after the break with Spain still calling the shots and Germany having to stand firm under pressure. Garcia went close when she put the rebound wide after Vivien Brandt had failed to hold on Germany goalscorer Isabella Hartig jumps to a Sanchez shot as the goal continued to elude the for the ball with Queralt Gomez. Spaniards. The Germans can never be written off though and with four minutes remaining, they levelled the scores with only their second shot of the half. Nina Ehegotz curled in a low cross and although Jasmin Sehan missed her shot at the near post, Isabella Hartig was on hand to slot the ball home from close range. Spain could still have won it in injury time but Brandt came to her side's rescue with a fine save from a Sanchez free kick, taking the game into a penalty shootout. Brandt was to continue her heroics in the shootout with saves from Garcia Boa and Garcia, despite appearing to have moved at least two yards off her line on each occasion. [email protected] Glasgow City are delighted to announce the signings of American defender Ella Stephan and Fiona Brown from Celtic. Stephan, who turned 24 years old last week, is a former US national team player at all youth levels from Under-17, Under-20 and most recently at Under-23. The Florida born player spent four very successful years at Florida State University, one of the top performing college soccer teams in the States, along with playing for W-League side Pali-Blues before going to ply her trade with Russian side FC Ryazan. On joining Glasgow City, Ella said: "I am very excited about the opportunity to play for the Scottish team, Glasgow FC. I have heard many great things about this team, and I look forward to being a part of this organisation." Commenting on securing the signature of Ella, Club Manager, Laura Montgomery said: "It is a fantastic piece of business for our club to have signed a player like Ella and I think highlights not only how ambitious we are as a club to keep pushing forward, but also how we can attract players of Ella's capability to play for Glasgow City. "Ella has spent her career so far in teams containing the likes of Alex Morgan, Kelly O'Hara, Lauren Chaney, Tobin Heath and Casey Noguiera both at international and club level and we look forward to benefiting from that level of experience at City. We had a very success- ful year this season, but we are already planning on how we surpass this for 2014 and having Ella on board will certainly help." 18-year-old dynamic Scotland Under-19 international Fiona be- came the second new face to be announced by the Champions for the forthcoming season as City aim to build on their success of recent years. Commenting on joining City, Fiona said: “I'm really excited to be joining Glasgow City for next season. I think it's a great opportunity to develop myself further and establish myself as a player. I'm really looking forward to training with new people and working under a new coach. “I've had four amazing years at Celtic and can't thank the staff and players enough for everything they've done for me. I wouldn't have had this opportunity without all the effort the club has made and I've loved my time there along with my time at Falkirk FC and Stenhousemuir. I'm grateful to have developed as an individual not only on the park but off the park too and to have made friends for life. “I can't wait to get started at the club and I'm excited to what the future holds.” City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black said of his new signings: "This post season I have had a little longer to target specific areas of the team I believe needed improved. Of course some players will look for new challenges abroad and some I had to make the difficult decision to let go, which in certain cases might have been surprising for those outside the club. "This year I am determined to work with a tighter group of players and a more focused group. Knowing that we have to fill a few defensive positions in the team I am delighted that Ella has joined us for the season. She comes highly recommended and will be here for the start of the pre-season. I am looking forward to working with her and wish her well. “I am delighted to have secured the signature of Fiona. Not many people will know that I met with Fiona and her Mother four years ago with the intention of bringing her to the club. At the time we were just getting a youth set-up in place and Fiona made a decision she believed was best for her career at that time. Needless to say I have followed her progress with interest and once I knew she was over her injury she became a priority signing for us. Fiona will add a lot of width to our play, she brings great quality, pace, intensity and a great attitude and I am certain she will flourish in her new environment. I wish her well and look forward to working with her in January.” Brown goes immediately into Wolecki Black’s new first team squad and will jet off with the rest of the team at the end of January for the club’s pre-season tournament in Germany. [email protected] C & K Basildon are having a fine first season in the South East Combination and are firmly amongst the title contenders. Last Sunday they reached the semi finals of the League Cup with a 4-2 victory over Ipswich Town. We talked to C & K captain Jenny Brown-Wealls, who is in her seventh season with the club and has been a major part of their success in recent campaigns. She spoke of her pride in their rise up the pyramid and hopes that things can continue in the future: How pleased were you with the win over Ipswich on Sunday, considering you had drawn with them a few days earlier? The win was very pleasing, especially after playing a tough game on Wednesday night (also against Ipswich). We were disappointed with the result on Wednesday as we felt we should have performed better so we wanted to bounce back strongly and get through to the semi finals with a good performance which we did. Ideally, would it have been preferable to have won the league game? Ideally you want to win every game and our main target for the season is to do as well as we can in the league but it was a difficult game and we made it hard by conceding two goals early in the second half, so to battle back and get the draw was a great demonstration of the character and determination we have in our squad. There is a long way to go in the league so that could prove to be a valuable point come the end of the season. You are due to play QPR in the semi finals. It’s a long way off but is that likely to be a good game? Yes, I expect it to be a tough but good game. We played them recently and shared the points in a 0-0 draw but it was a very open game with both teams having chances so I think it will be a very tight game but if we play the way we know we can, I feel we will make it to the final. How satisfied are you with the way the season has gone so far, have you exceeded your expectations following promotion? We are very satisfied with the season so far and after the start we had to the season our expectations have increased significantly. We are second in the league but only by goal difference so we feel we have a great chance of winning the league if we can get the right results in the second half of the season. We are still in all three cup competitions including our best ever showing in the FA Cup, so we feel we have a great shot at being in at least one cup final come the end of the season. Can you see it ending up as a two horse race or could other teams still have title hopes e.g. MK Dons and Norwich? I don't think you can ever rule out the other teams below us, there is a long way to go and Norwich have a lot of games in hand still to play. We shared the points in our two games with them and they will be very difficult to beat, especially at home. We have yet to play MK Dons so those two games will be key for both teams. I think it could all still change with seven or eight games still to play but we know that if we perform to the standard we expect we have a great chance of winning all our remaining games. This week you are away to Luton, do you see it as a chance to win and put pressure on your rivals? The aim every week is to get the win, that's the most important factor for us and we try not to focus on what the other teams are doing and just concentrate on our own performances. We know that if we can do that consistently, the league will be in our own hands. If we can get the win on Sunday we will finish the year on top of the league which will be a great boost for us going into the second half of the season. How much are you looking forward to playing West Ham in the FA Cup next month? It should be a great game, the FA Cup is always a great competition and we have never reached the Third Round before so this is a great chance for us to impress. We have played West Ham several times over the last few years during pre-season and feel that we are getting closer every time. This will be a great chance to see what standard we really have reached and although its a very tough game we feel its winnable especially with home advantage. You had a fantastic season last year, do you feel you are capable of at least matching that this season? Last year was a brilliant one for the club, to get a league and cup double was a fantastic way to show how far the club has come in the last few years and is something great to build on. We are definitely capable of repeating that feat but there is still a long way to go in all competitions. We are in great shape but we have to keep that momentum and belief going into 2014. [email protected] Chelsea manager Emma Hayes revealed further signings are on the way as she builds a team capable of winning the FA Women's Super League next season. Hayes' charges have departed Tokyo having reached the final of the International Women's Club Championship before losing 4-2 to Japanese league and cup champions INAC Kobe Leonessa on Sunday. Recent recruit Rachel Williams was the Blues' star player in Japan, scoring one and making one in the final as Chelsea almost pulled off a remarkable comeback having trailed 3-0 to their impressive hosts after 80 minutes. Williams has been joined in West London by her fellow England international , with both opting not to sign new deals at Birmingham City in favour of the move south. Despite the tournament in Japan only just ending, Hayes revealed she has no plans to take a break, instead putting her time and energy in to building a side capable of topping the WSL pile next year. "We have big expectations for next season at Chelsea and I think once everyone sees the signings we bring in you will see that we have very serious intentions to compete and win our league next season," said Hayes, who oversaw a 3-2 win over Sydney FC in the semi final in Japan. "I think once we complete the signings of a few more players we will add good quality to the team. But we also have some good youngsters coming through and I think you will see a much more competitive Chelsea next season. "Being here has allowed us to build a spirit, which is the most important thing. We will have more time to train when we are back in England and we will use this trip as a motivation for the players as it has been a massive success on and off the pitch as we have had time to spend in the community in Tokyo and Okayama." INAC Kobe were the big favourites for the game and opened up a 3-0 goal lead before Williams and Hannah Blundell pegged them back, only for the hosts to catch Chelsea on the break in injury time. Megumi Takase put INAC ahead with ten minutes on the clock and just before the half hour, American striker Beverly Goevel-Yanez doubled their lead from the penalty spot after she was adjudged to have been fouled by Bassett. Williams headed against the bar from a Yuki Ogimi corner just before half time but INAC looked to have sewn up the game when Ji So Yun powered home a shot from the edge of the area. Another corner led to Chelsea getting back in the game, this time ’s kick being headed in by Williams. Moments later, Blundell gave fresh hopes when she followed up to score after Ogimi’s initial shot had been blocked, but INAC made the game safe when Nahomi Kawasumi set up Emi Nakajima to score. Hayes believes running a side packed full of internationals so close during what is effectively pre-season for Chelsea will stand her players in good stead for next year. "We knew it would be a difficult game against a top team and due to the time of the year we didn't have the fitness levels to play a high-pressing game," she added. "In general I think we had good opportunities, we hit the bar and had a one on one but we missed those chances at crucial times and as we didn't convert, 3-0 was too difficult a score to come back from. "But the team showed great character second half and I think if we played them again during our season we would give them an even better game. "INAC are a team that have played together for a long time and that is the difference. We have similar philosophies and they have top players but the time together was the main difference." Bradford City on the attack against Stoke City.

[email protected] Swansea City caused an upset in the quarter finals of the Shared Access Welsh Premier Women's League Cup when they won 2-1 away to Cardiff City FC. The game was goalless at half time but Swansea opened the scoring ten minutes after the restart through Katy Hosford. Shanelle Edwards levelled the scores midway through the half but five minutes later, Lauren Hancock sent the Swans into the last four. League leaders Cardiff Met Ladies successfully negotiated a tricky tie away to Newcastle Emlyn with a 4-1 victory. Ellie Sargent gave the students a fifth minute lead which was doubled by Laura Walkley, before Amanda John pulled a goal back for the home side on the stroke of half time. Walkley put Cardiff Met back in control on 64 minutes with her second goal and Sargent also completed her double to wrap up the win. Port Talbot Town also booked their place in the semi finals with a 3-0 win against Aberystwyth Town. Two goals in a two minute spell midway through the first half, scored by Lauren Williams and Lauren Amor, helped Port Talbot on their way and they made the game safe with six minutes remaining when Lauren Smith netted the third. The semi final line up is completed by Llanidloes who travelled to North Wales and returned with a 2-0 success over Caernarfon Town under their belts. Lowri Savage opened the scoring for the mid-Wales side, who are having a good season, on 36 minutes and Kate Thomas clinched the win with the second goal deep into the second half. The draw for the semi finals has been announced and it sees Cardiff Met Ladies playing host to Swansea City, whilst Llanidloes will take on Port Talbot Town. Both ties will be played on Sunday 26th January. This week sees a full programme of fixtures in the Shared Access Welsh Premier Women’s League and the standout match sees league leaders Cardiff Met Ladies play away to third placed PILCS. The England Under-20 international joins the club from Lincoln Ladies, where she has been a consistent top performing defender. Martha came through the Lincoln City Centre of Excellence, won the Lincoln Ladies Players' Player of the Year Award, Supporters of the Year Award and finished the season as Player of the Match in the Continental Cup Final against Arsenal. She also had a very impressive tournament as England reached the Final of the UEFA Women's Under-19 Championships during the summer. Speaking about the move, Martha said: "I am delighted to be a Liverpool Ladies player and to be a part of such a successful team. This is a fantastic move for me and I am looking forward to starting training with Matt and the entire squad." Manager Matt Beard added: "It's fantastic to have Martha in the team; she is a very talented, versatile player who will add an extra dimension to the squad. "Next season will be a challenging one as we fight to defend our title and it's important that we have quality players in the team who can perform to the high standard that the WSL league demands." Sara Gregorius, Sarah Quantrill, Whitney Engen and Jess Holbrook left the club at the end of the 2013 season while goalkeeper Rachael Laws will also return to Sunderland AFC Ladies, after having been on loan for the second half of the season.

Millwall Lionesses have swooped to capture two players from Liverpool’s FA WSL title winning squad in the season just finished. Goalkeeper Sarah Quantrill and attacking midfielder Lillie Billson have joined the club, who are among the founder members of the new FA WSL2 division. Quantrill previously played for Arsenal and Chelsea before moving to Merseyside 18 months ago whilst Billson has played in the UEFA Women’s Champions League for Bristol Academy and spent a spell on loan with Lincoln Ladies last season. Sarah and Lillie are the latest two to have joined up with Alberto Kurti’s squad with Sinead Boyer, Naomi Cole and Leeta Rutherford also having signed on last month.

Viewers of A Question of Sport are likely to have spotted a familiar face in women’s football during this week’s episode. Sunderland goalkeeper Rachael Laws was asked by the BBC to feature in the “Captain’s Challenge” round. Team captains Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell, along with guests including former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, athlete Eilidh Child and tennis player Dan Evans, will be seen taking penalties against her in the studio. 22-year-old Rachael has returned to Sunderland following a loan spell with Liverpool, where she helped them secure the FA WSL title. In doing so she joined as being the only players to pick up Super League and Premier League Championship medals in the same calendar year. Steph bids farewell to Blackburn Blackburn Rovers player Steph Marsh has completed her move to Manchester City after earning a contract for the 2014 FA Women's Super League season. The talented left sided player, who joined Rovers from Everton's Reserves in the summer of 2012, made her 35th and final appearance for the club in Sunday's 3-1 win away to Sporting Club Albion in the Premier League Cup. Female Disability team launches Misfits Inclusion Women’s Football Club are ready to launch Gloucestershire FA’s first-ever female disability team. The club, who already have an adult female team participating in the Bristol Women’s Football Casual League, have launched the Inclusion team in partnership with Gloucestershire FA (GFA) and Access Sport. The national charity’s two-year project, the Ignite Programme, aims to provide sporting opportunities for disadvantaged and disabled people and, in this case, females to get involved in football. The club will be looking to take fitness and football sessions to local community groups and disability organisations and engage with colleges and universities to help raise their profile and encourage females to get involved. They are also recruiting volunteers who would like to get involved in working with the new participants. With funding received from the Gloucestershire FA, the club can support volunteers to gain valuable and recognised coaching qualifications through the FA Level 1 Coaching Course and FA Coaching Disabled Footballers Course, which are vital in ensuring players and coaches can benefit from this opportunity. GFA Women and Girls football development officer Alexis Lunn-Gadd said: “There is a definite need for this opportunity in the county. The project’s primary aim will be to increase inclusive participation opportunities for females in and around the Bristol area, and if it appears to be successful then we will look to replicate the work in other areas of the county. “This isn’t just a football session; the Misfits Inclusion team are keen to help support their participants with personal development both socially and physically, provide opportunities for disabled and non-disabled volunteers and coaches through the Gloucestershire FA Coach Education Programme and, if the players want to participate competitively, there is potential to develop this via the Gloucestershire FA Ability Counts League which currently offers male participants with a disability the opportunity to participate in a competitive fixture programme. Having said this, players do not need to have any playing experience to get involved.” Any players, coaches or volunteers wishing to get involved in the project should contact Julia Williams at [email protected] (07917 753937) or Alexis Lunn-Gadd at Gloucestershire FA on 01454 615888 ([email protected]). Reserve team manager leaves Yeovil Late last week, Andy Dickinson announced the very sad news that he can no longer continue as the Yeovil Town Ladies Reserve Team Manager due increased work commitments. As ever, thinking of the team first, Andy had timed the announcement to coincide with the Reserves winter break, meaning the adjustment to the Reserve team Management structure can take place in a measured way without disrupting the team's development. Commenting on his decision, Andy said: “Due to an increase in production at work I will no longer be able to give the time needed for the Reserves. It is reassuring to know that they will be in very good hands with Michelle (Yeowell) taking over full control. I feel that now is a good time to stand down as they are on their winter break allowing Michelle and the club to sort out any necessary business without disrupting the team's continuing development.” In a typically generous move Andy also took time to thank others at the club when he said: “There are many people I'd like to thank during my time at Yeovil Town Ladies FC which has been an amazing journey with a lot of fond memories. Firstly Amy Jones who assisted me when I first joined to run the Under-12s back in 2007. Having progressed through the age groups, I was given the opportunity to work with the senior squad under Chris White and when he had to step back I took on the Reserve Team assisted by Mike Board and more recently Michelle Yeowell. “Behind the scenes I have always been well supported by the hard working duo - David Mills and Sarah Lawler who have worked tirelessly to bring the club to where it is today. There are also the two club secretaries Ali King and Hilary Howard who have done a great job sorting all the paperwork. “Lastly and definitely by no means least are all the players from youth through to seniors that I have had the privilege to work with. It has been an honour and I wish the club and all it's teams the very best for the bright future they have. In particular the Reserve Team players who have worked hard and as their self belief grows will get the success they deserve.” Commenting on Andy's decision to step down, Club Chairman David Mills said: “Andy can be very proud of what he has achieved with the Reserves over the years and one of his hallmarks has been sticking with things in adverse circumstances. Many lesser coaches/Managers would have been disheartened and thrown in the towel over the last few seasons when Andy has sometimes had to deal with playing games short handed or being on the wrong end of big scores as other teams have put out largely first team line ups. However he has always showed great determination to stick with it and make sure things are done correctly.” Mills also went on to highlight that Dickinson had contributed to the club gaining FA WSL status when he added: “We only achieved FA WSL status as the whole club operated as one and Andy's role as Reserve team manager was key to this as it was Andy who developed the young players for the first team or helped first team players come back from injury. “Andy has been a great member of this club since 2007 and it was a very sad day when he had to stand down. I and the club thank Andy for his great service and of course he will continue to be a part of the YTLFC family.” DO YOU HAVE ANY NEWS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE INCLUDED? Sheffield & Hallamshire League Even though they were beaten 12-1, Swinton Athletic will look back on their visit to Staveley MW with a certain degree of satisfaction. For, their consolation goal, by Korey Burton, was their first since joining the league in the summer. With the League taking a firmer stance on teams not fulfilling fixtures because of not having a full eleven, Swinton played throughout with just eight players. Both Billie Gordon and Sasha Lowe scored hat-tricks for Staveley whose other goals came from Lauren Hardy (2), Carly Rowlands, Jade Tollerfield, Lauren Walton and Kirsty Woolley as the hosts recorded their best score of the season. Sheffield Wednesday Development were 4-0 winners over Socrates thanks to goals from Ashleigh Sykes, Demi Cassinelli, Natalie Ledger and Chloe Winter. [email protected] ACTION Shots......
