Not Your Mother’s Library Transcript Episode 14: Mother’s Day Reads (Brief intro music) Leah: Hello, and welcome to Not Your Mother’s Library, a readers’ advisory podcast from the Oak Creek Public Library. I’m Leah, one of your hosts. Rachel is also virtually here. This month, guys…this month we need to tweak the title a little bit, because we’re celebrating Mother’s Day! This episode will be all about our mothers’ favorite books, which means that for Rachel and I, this is our mother’s library. Rachel: Hi, everyone. It’s Rachel. As Leah pointed out, we are here to celebrate Mother’s Day. This year, the national holiday takes place on Sunday, May 10th, so be sure to create an artistic portrait out of noodles before that date hits. You know what else makes a great gift? Books! My mum is a mystery enthusiast. Give her a murder to solve, and she’ll be at her most content. She is actually in the process of writing her own series of cozies. For those who aren’t as familiar with what that means, cozies are a mystery subgenre. They focus more on the story, setting, and characters surrounding a whodunit than an in-depth criminal procedure or graphic depictions of violence. Think of M.C. Beaton’s “Agatha Raisin” or the TV show “Murder, She Wrote.” I’ve read the first few novels in mum’s series, which are currently on the road to publication, and they are flat-out really good. I realize that as her daughter I am partial, but I also used to be a copyeditor and have read some genuinely awful manuscripts, so I’m betting that experience balances out my bias.

  • “Amazing Grace” Starring Ioan Gruffudd, Albert Finney, & Michael
“Amazing Grace” starring Ioan Gruffudd, Albert Finney, & Michael Gambon, 2006, PG, 118 minutes Major Themes: Slavery Freedom Perseverance & Faith Justice & Reform Politics Interesting info: Tagline – Every song has its story. Every generation has its hero. William Wilberforce (1759 – 1833) was a very gifted statesman, a social reformer, a philanthropist and an evangelical Christian. As well as working to bring about the end of the slave trade, and then to abolish slavery itself, he was concerned about mistreatment of animals (he was a founder member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, later to become the RSPCA), education, the social impact of heavy gin drinking, and the need for missionaries in various parts of the world, including India and Africa (he was a founder of the Church Missionary Society and the British and Foreign Bible Society). Amazing Grace is the most honored and recorded song of all time. Amazon.com lists some 2000 currently available recordings of Amazing Grace. Nothing else comes remotely close. It crosses all lines—from classical to country, from rock to traditional folk. It is permanently ingrained in the culture. No other song has enjoyed such diverse rendering. He headed the parliamentary campaign against the British slave trade for 26 years until the passage of the Slave Trade Act 1807, when Parliament passed a bill to abolish the slave trade. (The film’s release is a way of marking the bicentennial of that event.) Some years later, just three days before Wilberforce’s death, slavery itself was completely abolished in Britain. Part of his epitaph in Westminster Abbey reads: In the prosecution of these objects he relied, not in vain, on God.

Incampo May 4, 2012 Trinity College Department of Theater and Dance Hartford, CT 2 Table of Contents Acknowledgements 5 I: History Time, Space and Sound in Beckett’s short dramatic works 7 A historical analysis of the playwright’s theatrical spaces including the concept of temporality, which is central to the subsequent elements within the physical, metaphysical and sonic landscapes. These landscapes are constructed from physical space, object, light, and sound, so as to create a finite representation of an expansive, infinite world as it is perceived by Beckett’s characters.. II: Theory Phenomenology and the conscious experience of existence 59 The choice to focus on the philosophy of phenomenology centers on the notion that these short dramatic works present the theatrical landscape as the conscious character perceives it to be. The perceptual experience is explained by Maurice Merleau-Ponty as the relationship between the body and the world and the way as to which the self-limited interior space of the mind interacts with the limitless exterior space that surrounds it.
