MERIT BADGE COUNSELORS

This is for those who want to become a Merit Badge Counselor or want to change the Merit Badges they teach.

● The BSA requires information on Adult Volunteer applications to permit background checks. This re- quirement to register is an annual requirement - I will provide guidance on how we will meet that require- ment as we get closer to the annual deadline. ● To become a MB counselor provide me with both a completed MB counselor form and a completed Adult Volunteer form. Note that the only signature required on the Adult Volunteer form is your own. ● I provide the information to our Council and list you on our OD District master list. ● Do not send either application to NCAC - they will not be used. ● Once you've sent me the forms, consider yourself "listed" and legal. You won't get a confirmation from me unless specifically requested. ● Several times a year or when requested, I publish the master list to the Old Dominion District Yahoo mail list. Please write if you want a copy. ● After you are on the District list, if you desire to make any changes to the Merit Badges that you teach, I only need an email, letter, phone call, or grab me at a meet- ing or campout and let me know what changes you need. No additional paperwork. ● I can provide via email both application forms and the District list and will send our current District list and both applications to the District Yahoo mailing list in early October. ● The purpose of the Merit Badge program is to give the scouts the experience of contacting a previously un- known counselor, setting appointments (with a buddy) and working off the requirements as agreed with the counselor. Second is the exposure to various subjects This empty space could be occupied and skills. It’s only October, but planning for trip to the Klondike begins now! 2010 marks the 5th ODD Klondike Derby – an event geared toward the Patrol and Crew.

The Klondike Derby is a patrol competition of patrol skills, individual knowledge, teamwork, and ingenuity with a winter backdrop and Alaskan challenges. The main competition lasts all day Saturday with the main goal of working as Patrol to complete as many different stations as possible – no patrol has ever done them all! Stations are like mines or stakes – locations where with the right perseverance, the patrol can find gold. Each year, new stations are added bringing new ways of approaching Scout Skills, Patrol leadership and cooperation, and just plain fun. There are stations for firebuilding, first aid, orienteering, cooking, leadership, personal fitness, and teambuilding. But it’s not just firebuilding or first aid – there’s always a story and unique requirement that has to be met. In pioneering we have given extra points for the tallest, unguided structure one year and the most compact another. It varies every year! During a recent Eagle Board, the Eagle Candidate shared that the most fun he had a campout was the Klondike Derby. It allowed his friends and him to plan out a day of fun accomplishing different tasks. The event provides a truly fun and “rewarding” time with lots of flexibility in the approach. The patrols get to choose what events to participate in and are rewarded for the choices they make. At the same time, troops can choose to either camp or stay in bunk rooms. Saturday Breakfast, Saturday Dinner, and Sunday Breakfast are all included along with socials Friday night and Saturday Night. Hot Chocolate and Coffee is also provided throughout the day. Patrols need to cook the Saturday lunch for part of the competition! So the patrol/crew/troop is able to get the maximum out of this event in the way of basic Scout skills. The Klondike is again being held at the 4-H Center in Front Royal, VA. It’s a great venue! The Klondike Derby is a choice and one that has seen troops return annually because it delivers the Scouting Program. Estimated cost for this year is Scouts & Scouters in the Lodge: $70.00 Scouts & Scouters camping: $40.00

The Klondike Package should be available this month! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contract Fred Woody at 202-685-5750 or [email protected]. THINK SNOW OA UPDATE (cont.)
